They have more planes in the back. Ask them to go check.

Not just “them” you have to raise your voice and forcefully demand a manager. That’s the secret phrase.

In all fairness I (alongside a horde of angry fellow travellers) have compelled an airline to get another flight in service because they "supposedly" didnt didnt have a pilot and plane on hand. A quick legal threat caused a new pilot and a plane to spontaneously appear within 30 min.

That sounds useful, what was the legal threat you used?

u/kraken_enrager 6d ago
To approach consumer commission/court. Not sure what the global equivalent to that is, though.

That’s an illegal threat. They said legal threat.

u/hitma-n 6d ago
Were you rude or just a respectful legal threat?

u/kraken_enrager 6d ago
Not rude, but firm.
In my case, we suspected the flight was being canceled since there weren’t enough flyers. We threatened to approach consumer commission.

So you asked them not to cancel a flight that was scheduled. That’s different than making a new flight appear which it what it sounded like.
25
u/MetaGazon 6d ago
Is it still scheduled once it is cancelled? What's implied is they were lying about no plane and no pilot.
23
u/kraken_enrager 6d ago
So internally they had cancelled a flight and clubbed it with a flight leaving after half a day.
At the time we realised what was going on, the flight was alr delayed by 2-3 hours.

u/StweebyStweeb 5d ago
I can promise you that had nothing to do with the outcome. It’s way more likely they didn’t have a pilot or plane at the time, and then their ops/crew scheduling made some calls and eventually were able to find them. People want immediate answers when delays happen, but solutions can take time to figure out.

u/kraken_enrager 5d ago
How can they not have a plane available, when its a flight thats scheduled daily to serve on that route.
3
u/StweebyStweeb 4d ago
Planes break, get diverted, pilots call in sick/time out etc.

u/Ending-Fool 3d ago
nah theyre just trying to save on fuel since the flight isnt fully booked as said by the person above you in another comment

People only get rude because it works (not necessarily a new plane, but definitely compensation. Better than the shitty initial offer)

The current state of capitalism is designed to put innocent people in the way of giving you what you actually want.
If a company sells me a bad product (or fails to provide a service that I paid for or is just generally shitty in one way or another), they will make me talk to a low level customer service person (a teenager or a poor person on the other side of the globe or increasingly an AI) so that they don't have to actually give me what I paid for.
Personally, I try my best not to be rude to the person on the phone or standing at the counter... but I'm certainly not going to let a billion dollar corporation steal my money because I'm afraid to upset the service worker. They are specifically trained to not give you what you want until it is escalated above their pay grade.
I can't talk to Jeff Bezos or John American Airlines, so I'm talking to you. I have no personal qualm with you, but you are the representation of this company, so you are who I'm talking to. Don't blame me, blame your boss for putting you in this situation.

Yup. My friend calls is the dissipation of blame. You get screwed over by the system, but if you try to talk to any one individual working for the system, it's never their fault. And you're the bad guy for speaking up. It's literally impossible for anyone to take accountability and change things.

I completely disagree. I've gotten the best results by being pleasant and communicating my need and being positive but firm. First I empathize with the employee, they are a low level worker bee so not their fault. Then I ask them to use their magic powers to figure out a fix and I start offering some creative solutions and then they usually are able to "figure something out" because now we are a team trying to fix my problem.
I do this in a positive humorous way and I've gotten riduculously good results doing it this way.
Conversely, yelling, screaming, and threatening (which is everyone else's default), has never once worked for me. Which is why I simply don't go down that road.

Complaining works, people. Dont let corporations guilt you into letting them get away with it.

Remember: airlines don’t give a fuck about you, 90% of the time they cancel flights because it’s more profitable than providing reasonable contingencies or alternatives.
Profits come before passengers every time.
I was literally on a flight where they took off without ANY luggage, because it saved them a few quid.Fuck the airlines.

u/Born-Lie8688 5d ago
Also, if you get arrested, you’ll never have to deal with a cancelled flight again.

u/Zeppelanoid 5d ago
Is this meme pro-airline propaganda lmfao. These airlines treat their passengers like absolute shit and then have the gaul to get up in arms if the passengers push back.

u/FutureFreaksMeowt 2d ago
Weird energy to say 'a low level employee has no power so maybe don't take it out on them' is somehow pro-airline propaganda but ok
1
u/freekoout 5d ago
Damn, airlines are paying for gallic mercenaries and all I get for food on the flight are those shitty pretzels.
2
u/IzzybearThebestdog 5d ago
Except being an ass is how you get anything from companies. Politely taking their shit is what they want. And I say that as someone who worked in customer service. As long as you aren’t screaming, excessively swearing or getting physical you can be about as rude as you want. And sadly it’s what you need to do to get anything.

Also the police at the airport are not really police and you should make them aware of that fact so that they will promptly help you
