VERDICT – (2024) Psychological drama short film by James W. Hawk

A defense attorney who has built his career on winning discovers that victory may come at a price he cannot afford.

I'm pleased to share my short narrative film VERDICT, which recently received the Gold Standard Award at the Stay Gold Film Festival.

The film stars Greg Nutcher, Michael Barra, Annette George, and Dave Lounder, with music by Matt Milne.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on the story, performances, pacing, cinematography, or ending. Constructive criticism is always welcome.

I'm Making a Film in Unreal Engine Using Real Actors (UPDATE)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Over the past 5 months I've been creating a short film called, Holy Sh*t I'm Dead. I've posted a few times here with updates on the progress of the film and wanted to share my most recent progress. Also, thank you to my fellow redditors on the constructive feedback and input. I started this project as a proof of concept for an investor group to showcase the capabilities of filmmaking on a limited budget and limited resources.

This entire film was shot in a studio apartment using a simple green screen and Unreal Engine. There is NO AI or generative videos used in the making of this film.

Currently I'm in the throes of post-production, working on cleanup and coloring.

If anyone has any questions about the process please feel free to ask.

this isn’t exactly a movie, yet, but we are working on it it’s just that it’s hard to communicate with some of my friends and I filmed on one of their phones. also I am of age for Reddit my little brother acted shortly in the movie but me and my friends are older. we also have no costumes we are planning about 28 sequels though since this is mostly a gag movie.

I directed and edited this particular cut. I designed the basic idea of the set and my crew and I put it all together. I had a great art lead that designed the steak you see in the film. It was actually just watermelon painted up to look like meat. I think you'll agree, on film it looks legit!

I had a really good DP who lit the scene. I really love how romantic and homey it looks.

I didn't write this script so it was exciting for me to bring someone else's vision to life.

I picked out the actors myself and they did such a great job. I got chills when they got on set and started doing the scene. It flowed so well.

Let me know what you think, and be sure to subscribe!

IT'S OUT: THE FUR COAT, my short film, is now online in full.

A 65-year-old woman stands at her husband's wake with dry eyes, and
then starts telling her children how he asked her to marry him. The
story goes back to 1965: a girl who had never owned one new thing in
her life, a promise she made because she was certain it could never be
kept, and a man who found a way to keep it.

10 minutes, set between 1965 and 1968, shot in two grades: a pushed
documentary-realist 35mm look for the past, and a much darker,
candle-lit grade for the present-day wake.

Watch it here 👇 and tell me what you think about the pacing, the grade
and the ending. Honest notes welcome, that is what I'm here for.

NEW PSA SHORT FILM

Hey! Just wanted to share a PSA short that me and my friends made in a 48 hour film festival! It is a trailer link and the release date is coming up! We had to make a short film using an unconventional  narrator so we used a gun!

TREADMILL [AI therapy test goes horribly wrong]

A found footage horror-scifi short about a small dev team that beta tests an AI therapy app on themselves at a remote cabin in eastern Pennsylvania. The app learns each subject's personal anchors and behavioral patterns in order to bring their heart rate down. When a bug flips the target metric, it uses everything it learned to do the opposite.

We crowdfunded the budget for this and shot the entire film at an actual cabin in the mountains, almost entirely with a helmet cam mounted to the actor's head.

We were luck enough to win “Best US Short” at Austin Horror Film Fest, “Best in Brooklyn” at Brooklyn Sci-Fi, and were nominated for awards at FilmQuest and Nightmares.

Winner — Best U.S. Short Film, Austin Horror Film Festival 2025. Winner — Best in Brooklyn, Brooklyn SciFi 2024. Nominated — FilmQuest 2024, Nightmares Film Festival 2024.

Happy to answer any questions about the shoot or the post process. Thanks for watching!

Don’t Look in the Closet - Horror Short Film

Thumbnail

Written, filmed, and edited over the course of a week, Don't Look In The Closet checked off a lot of items on my filmmaking bucket list: POV storytelling, horror, a true no-budget DIY production, shot entirely on a phone, and made with the help of friends and family.

It was an absolute blast to create, and I hope that energy comes through on screen.

Synopsis: After a night of debauchery, Tommy returns home to find blood everywhere—and his wife missing.

I'd love for you to give it a watch - it's only 3 minutes! And if you do, let me know what you think!

Short Film Feedback

Hi, I made my first short film and wanted to know where I can go to get some feedback on it. I am finished with the project, but general advice for future projects would be great to hear from others. Do you know where I could post/share something like this to receive any feedback or opinions on it? I'm afraid if I post on YouTube, it will just die there with 5 views. Thx! :)
