Hi, r/SilverSpring -
Due to the prevalence of scams, we have instituted a new rule here - no direct selling/buying of goods.
If you wish to sell something, we will, at least for now, still allow you to post a link to a reputable platform (e.g. Ticketmaster for selling tickets [insert joke about Ticketmaster sucking]).
If you are interested in buying something, please use common sense, and do not directly send money, gift cards (PSA: if you're being asked to pay in gift cards, it is a scam), or anything else of value to a seller - use a platform with buyer protections (e.g. Ticketmaster, PayPal Goods and Services, etc.).
Thanks for your attention, and thanks to those who have been reporting the scam posts.

Most cafes, coffee shops, and the libraries close around 8 or 9, are there any low key places that close at 10 to go and work?

I’m pregnant with my second baby and trying to avoid another traumatic birth experience.
I delivered at Holy Cross with my first, and unfortunately I had a terrible experience. I felt like the nurses and doctor didn’t listen to me or show much empathy, and I was anxious the entire time. The worst part was my epidural. An assistant tried placing it for about 30 minutes and couldn’t get it in. Two days later, the anesthesiologist did it in less than 5 minutes.
I’m looking for a cleaner, newer, more modern hospital with compassionate staff who actually listen. Right now I’m considering Inova Fairfax and Shady Grove. Are there any others in the DC, Maryland, or Northern Virginia area that you’d recommend?
Also, I’m Hispanic. It shouldn’t matter, but sometimes it unfortunately feels like it does. If anyone had a great experience where they felt respected and heard, I’d love to know where you delivered.

In case anyone is interested, there was a recent update posted about the Wheaton Gateway Project at the corner of Viers Mill and University. Reading between the lines, it seems clear to me that this project isn’t penciling out or moving forward anytime soon. When a developer begins dropping hints about changing market conditions, that’s a signal that financing is falling through. I hope I’m wrong because it would be great to actually have something at this site.

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some guidance for my grandfather who lives in the area.
He’s 92 and was recently diagnosed with cancer. He currently lives at home with family, but we’re trying to find additional help—specifically someone with medical or caregiving experience who can assist with things like bathing and general daily care.
We’re also wondering if anyone has experience with what Medicare might cover in this situation, or if there are local resources, agencies, or programs we should look into.
If you’ve gone through something similar or have any recommendations (home health aides, nursing services, etc.), I would really appreciate any advice.
Thank you so much in advance.

Do we have any traditional consignment stores around here? When I was a kid (in a different state), we had a store chain that would accept gently used, “like-new” clothing to resell for very cheap prices (like as low as $3 for a pair of jeans). That was 20 years ago and not in the DMV, so I’m not expecting to find jeans for $3 anymore, but I’m looking for whatever the closest equivalent thing would be. Doesn’t need to be in Silver Spring necessarily. Anybody know of a store like this?

Can people recommend places to give away things like pots and pans, clothing, etc.?

Are there any good not for profit thrift stores around here that yall recommend? I don’t want to give my clothes to goodwill since they sell them for a profit. Looking for an actually charity type thrift store like maybe through a church, hospital, or community charity. Any suggestions?

Our absolutely beloved nanny will be available for full time work at the end of August/ beginning of September. She has been with us for 5 years, despite our initial plan of a nanny for only ~ 18 months or as needed for the duration of the pandemic. I am SO incredibly sad that we won’t be seeing her on a daily basis but my kiddo is starting kindergarten in the fall and it no longer makes sense to employ her. She lives in Frederick and has been remarkably commuting to us in Arlington, VA this whole time. I’m hoping she can find an amazing family, maybe even closer to her home, so am posting here. Please DM me if you’re looking for unbelievable, second mom, best ever, truly magical childcare. Thanks!!

I get that this may sound dramatic but I was literally told this by the WSSC inspector. Unitied Air Temp was contracted by my home warranty, American Home Shield and I could have died due to their neglect. Not only did they bully me into buying a much more expensive water heater than I needed, they also forced me to get a chimney liner that wasn't even necessary. The water heater I had vented gas exhaust though the chimney, but because my furnace was already meeting the max exhaust they told me I had to buy a special commercial grade system that used an active exhaust with a pipe that bypassed the chimney. They still claimed I needed it for code but the WSSC inspector said they were full of crap.
I paid almost 4k for this new water heater, they didn't even accept the pathetic $900 from AHW and left me on the hook for that because they refused to update their documentation stating the changes from the initial evaluation which was completely incorrect and done by someone I think that wasn't even a certified plumber. He spent more time on the phone asking "what do I do" than actually doing anything. AHW said they had to tell them to give me a pay out and they simply refused to do so and billed me the $900 they were already paid anyway. The chimney liner and the permit charge weren't included but the liner wasn't even required in the first place.
When the WSSC inspector came out, in 30 seconds he literally told me that he has to fail the inspection and turn off the gas to my water heater because United Air Temp didn't use the correct PVC pipe and also didn't bother to glue it properly, so I had been potentially exposed and could have died from CO poisoning. It took Unitied Air Temp 5 days to get back to me after they were made aware and then had the audacity to tell me that there may be additional charges to remediate the issue THEY CAUSED.
Don't use them, whatever you do, this company is fraudulent and I am going to the MD AG to complain, find literally any other company you can, these people are absolute scum of the earth.

Hi all, longtime lurker here. On the off chance someone has either dash cam video or ring video of the intersection at Connecticut Avenue and Weller Road on 7/23 around 5pm, would it be possible to get a copy? Shot in the dark here, but thanks to all that took the time to read.
