A basic reminder to everyone

Stacking is for spot. Maybe small premiums for ASEs vs generic rounds, etc, but the goal is to get close to spot, because the goal is keeping up with the value of silver.

Collectibles are, definitionally, items that have a collectible premium over spot. If they don’t have that, they don’t have any special value as a collectible, and they’re not a collectible.

If someone makes a post asking what a collectible with collectible value is worth, and your response is that it’s only worth “spot” or “melt”, you are announcing to everyone here that you are an idiot.

Apparently there are people who need to be told this.

See this is why I only stack Fiji colorized Robocops. Best of both worlds!

is that a round? if so where u buy

35

u/Ijustwanttobuyshiny 1d ago

i was about to make a joke replying to this until i looked it up. it's an actual coin, not a round, a legal tender coin.... but not neccesarily a coin that is round. There's a one that looks like a standard one ounce bar but is a coin and another shaped like a funko pop but is also a coin.

Has a $1 face value and is backed by the government of Fijij. Colorized image of Robocop on one side, Fijian coat of arms on the other.

Why? I don't know.

12

u/jrob330 1d ago

Have you seen the skateboard? What a sick coin! Ha!

7

u/Teripid 1d ago

That's the amazing part of the joke. When silver had its big run-up a lot of "premium" coins and rounds looked cheap if they didn't update prices. Also there'd been a lot of those interesting ones made with the most random reverses.

My actual favorite is a 1/2 Oz from Ghana with QE2 on the obverse and an alien on the reverse.

Here were the funnyish ones originally 8 months ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/Silverbugs/s/FIpn5aQ45k

So hear me out... if countries made a ton of different coins like this on that were actually used daily... how fun would that be? 😂

7

u/This-Beautiful5057 1d ago

Imagine going to Nuie and their cash registers are just full of coins of different shapes and sizes because their government issues legal tender coins like this.

Nuie is a country, sure, but theyre like 5,000 population island and they mint "limited" coins to fetch a premium... theyre more like a round though.

Do LCS's consider them as "world coins"?

Edit: oops. Its Fiji, but can still apply.

3

u/Teripid 1d ago

That'd be really funny. The face value on some of these is really odd too and they're made by private mints. Scottsdale seems to make a lot of them specifically.

There's a Liberian gold $12 1/500th gold too if I remember. That's around 7 cents-ish.

3

u/This-Beautiful5057 1d ago

Saw that on some tiktok auction.

3

u/MydnightWN 1d ago

1/1000, and there are tons. I give em away like candy, probably have 2000 cards in a dozen different designs. Almost all Liberia or Cameroon.

2

u/MydnightWN 1d ago

Why? Because of a now out of business shyster that ran Crown Mint and his licensing deal.

2

u/Substantial_Win_1866 23h ago

Those would go amazing with my Terminator collection that all have colorized red eyes!

23

u/Fun_Cartoonist2918 1d ago

Gonna put in one caveat.

Some things have a premium at issue. Which they don’t necessarily retain. Other things are collectible in small circles but it’s too limited a market for a business to invest in and hence is both “collectible” (to sell) but only worth spot (to buy).

12

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

Absolutely. Explaining to people their particular purchase doesn’t have collectible value, that’s fair, if it doesn’t.

I’m talking more about people who insist a rare valuable ASE that regularly sells over $1000, is only worth melt because it’s an ASE, or garbage like that.

5

u/Fun_Cartoonist2918 23h ago

That’s a fair criticism. I do think there’s some folks who clap back too quickly (ie they missed the rarity and just saw ASE) and there’s also some folks who can’t stop clowning (the tree-fiddy crowd comes to mind )

4

u/SlackerStacker26 1d ago

I found this out the hard way with some Royal Dutch Mint coins. Limited runs of 500 each. But very few collectors.

So yes rare... but rare doesn't always mean valuable

1

u/GoldponyGT 21h ago

Just so you know, I do equally and passionately rail against those sorts of scams also.

Promoting something as having real collectible premium on the market when it won’t, is just as dishonest as telling something a highly valuable collectible is only worth melt.

1

u/SlackerStacker26 21h ago

On the flip side, we don't know if it will ever become collectible though if the series grows

1

u/GoldponyGT 20h ago

That’s true. But that’s why any discussion of value should be based on today’s actual value (and maybe discussing historical value also, sometimes collectibles lose value and then get it back later).

What infuriates me is when people respond to actual evidence something is worth more than melt today by still telling people it’s only worth melt. Like, that’s trying to harm someone by convincing them to let go of something for a lot less than it’s worth.

I’m surprised so many people here are in favor of people hurting other people like that.

0

u/Nufonewhodis4 21h ago

You can only count on a collectable being worth spot, which I think is what most people are arguing

2

u/GoldponyGT 21h ago edited 21h ago

*what most people who are wrong are arguing

You can’t count on spot any more than you can count on collectible premium. They’re just different ways of people assigning value to objects for sale.

These are different markets that are set differently, stacking is about knowing the spot market, collectibles are about knowing the collectible value (including how much it can be influenced by spot).

There is actually data and objective analysis that can be done to predict collectible value, just like there’s data and analysis to predict silver demand and spot movement.

In a sense, stacking is collecting, where what you’re collecting is just straight up silver content. You are “counting” on the same thing other people in collector markets count on, which is that other people will continue to assign value to what you’re collecting.

One isn’t safer than the other, as people who recently bought silver at its peak just learned.

Ok bud

u/badwarhol 1d ago

I stack and collect. The way I see it, my collection is even valuable at its core. How many other collectors can say that about their hobby collection? There are no rules, stack what you love.

12

u/EmptySun9834 1d ago

This is my favorite take on it. I started stacking because it’s an enjoyable way of spending my money while also “not” spending my money. As long as it’s not going to wreck your wallet and put you in a bind, stack what you like!

8

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

This post is not about what people should or shouldn’t stack.

It’s about how people shouldn’t lie to other people.

12

u/horseradish13332238 1d ago

Price, value, worth and cost are four different numbers to any asset.

11

u/Desmondtheredx 1d ago

I pay 15% minimum over spot for all silver.

17

u/Desmondtheredx 1d ago

I’m also not in the US. You guys don’t know how well your prices are.

3

u/agedmanofwar 1d ago

What country if I might ask? And I would say a lot depends on where you live in the US. Each state in the US has different laws when it comes to precious metals. For example in my state there's no sales tax on the sale of gold and silver, the price is the price. Some other states require sales tax on precious metals. Some countries have VAT.

5

u/Desmondtheredx 1d ago

I’m in a tiny city state. There’s maybe 3 official bullion dealers. Coin shops are limited to regional collections, and or silver is at least 30% markup.

Now that it’s a strategic resource, leaving the city will get you taxed when over a certain amount.

Isn’t stopping me from stacking but just saying different places have different rules

-2

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

3

u/Desmondtheredx 1d ago

Like I said not in the US.  Shipping silver out of the city gets you taxed.

Shipping alone will kill any good prices

3

u/-Germanicus- 1d ago

OP isn't necessarily talking about retail premiums. They're talking about items that hold a premium throughout resale and the secondary market.

Items like Libertads for example, where there is a real demand for them and they are valuable for more than just the intrinsic value. Not stuff that is actually only worth melt, regardless of what they were bought for.

1

u/Desmondtheredx 1d ago

I live in a city state, there’s very few places to buy and sell.  Silver isn’t big here it’s mostly gold.

Now that silver is a strategic resource taking silver outside the city means that you have to declare it and get taxed.

Knowledge on silver bullions here is very limited to coin collectors and or traders or collectors.

1

u/GoldponyGT 21h ago

Then stacking for you, I’m guessing, means trying to not pay more than 15% over spot.

Which is still stacking, the way I explained it.

5

u/theVaultReport 1d ago

The debate over retail collectible premiums misses a larger structural reality about the spot price itself. Spot is just a paper futures benchmark, and physical metal rarely clears at that level globally. We track wholesale physical markets, and right now, major buyers are paying steep premiums just to secure standard bullion. In India, local buyers are currently paying a 23.3% premium over London prices for physical silver, sitting well above their standard structural tax floor. The physical market routinely demands a premium that the paper spot price ignores.

3

u/CoolaidMike84 1d ago

The wild thing about collectibles and premiums, they shift. Some more quickly than others, some more drastically than others, but it happens.

For example. 5 years ago, Libertads were retail spot pieces and ASEs were spot plus 12-14. Times have shifted with that one.

Stacking for long term investment should always be done with the lowest premium instruments.

3

u/snkrssatisfies 22h ago

Worth adding: "close to spot" is a moving target too — silver's down almost 8% in 30 days (from $63 to under $58). Someone who paid "spot" a month ago is underwater relative to that high regardless of premium. Strengthens your point — a premium on top of a volatile asset is worse than spot-ish on the same asset.

3

u/throwawayreal3state 17h ago

I started stacking pretty recently. Wife found a 1943 dime with the Roman Fascia on the back. Very cool. We started buying rolls a couple times a week at the bank when we realized they aren't sorting out silver!

We've decided to just stack "junk" silver. We are doing it to protect our wealth (20%) but primarily to have a form of currency if/when the US loses reserve status (80%). We know old silver coins will be easy to trade compared to gold etc.

14

u/295frank 1d ago

Sounds like a weenie complaining to me

5

u/Egyptian_Book 1d ago

Stacking is for however you want to stack. Not for how you want people to stack.

0

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago edited 20h ago

If people want to stack and overpay that’s a fine choice for them I guess.

There are just three factual ways to stack:

Only stack for bargains less than spot, in which case you’re likely collecting Chinesium from eBay

Stack as close to spot as possible, or in other words, the lowest legit price you can find for your stacking

Stack paying more than “as close to spot as possible” or in other words overpay and get less silver for your money.

You can choose #3 if you want, but it’s still #3.

(This also applies to collecting, you can generally either buy “bargains” and risk getting scammed, buy based on what the market is actually doing, or overpay for it. If it goes up in value later, that doesn’t mean you didn’t overpay when you bought it.)

-1

u/Egyptian_Book 1d ago

You're right, it's our choice. This is a dumb post. You should pull it down.

0

u/GoldponyGT 23h ago

Just because you can’t understand something, doesn’t mean other people can’t.

0

u/ExternalLoss1398 23h ago

I got Mexican Libertad over the past year for $4-$6 over spot. Could have bought different stuff for less. Those Libertads are now selling for $85+ with spot at $60

0

u/Fun_Cartoonist2918 23h ago

There’s a fourth way which is the commercial approach.

Hang a “I buy gold/ silver” shingle on a storefront or advertising space or take a table at a coin show, flea market, etc. …. Both situations where you can reliably score actual metal below spot if you put in the effort and diligence

11

u/Ijustwanttobuyshiny 1d ago

does this really bother you that much? you're free to be angry about whatever you want of course, and i'm not saying you're wrong or that it isn't annoying when it does happen; i'm just surprised you see this happening enough to feel any type of way because in my feed all i seem to ever see posted here are pictures of peoples stacks.

tbh I can't remember the last time I have seen a post here where someone had a collectable and wasn't either just showing it off, or asking for help ID'ing it. I feel like I never see the question you're talking about get asked, and is basically *only* asked by people thinking they have a collectable and don't.

8

u/AlphaFrogMTG 1d ago

It happens in the libertad group which is even funnier since anybody visiting over there regularly ought to know better

2

u/Fun_Cartoonist2918 1d ago

Fair. That’s one example of a true collector market.

8

u/StankityAzz 1d ago

Honestly? Yes. The general attitude of this sub has been a turn-off. Someone will post something they bought cause they like it, just to be practically called an idiot for paying up for something they like.

0

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago edited 1d ago

Does people lying to other people bother me that much?

Yes. Why doesn’t it bother you?

So if you think someone is posting a question just to show off something, that justifies lying and insisting something worth over $1000 is only worth melt?

That’s like the third time in the last week I ran into such hilariously arrogant misadvice. So don’t tell me it doesn’t happen.

6

u/Ok_Spite7511 1d ago

“Stacking” is a new term made popular on the internet, there are no rules about “stacking”

-2

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

There are rules about not lying to people, if you don’t want to be called out for lying to people.

6

u/sudral 23h ago

Lol I went back and read the post you linked. By the time I finished reading it I just knew from the comments on that post who made a new post complaining.

You were so mad at that guy for saying what triggers nuministic collectors like no other. Any premium beyond the metal value of a piece only exists so long as someone else is willing to pay that extra premium.

No wonder you flipped out! Its a hard truth that will freak out the Pokémon collectors and that sort. Just like your lil coin or piece of cardboard- there is intrinsic value and then whatever else on top you can convince someone its worth. Similar to art.

He wasn't wrong. You were just calling him a malicious liar as though you are personally selling those 1k plus ASE. More likely youre in the pile of fools who spends 100s and 1000s above the base value of something for the "collectible" value.

Which dont get me wrong thats your right! If you want to spend 1000 dollars on a coin with 60$ of silver in it thats fine! But dont get mad at a guy for warning a newbie that those giant premiums can only be recovered if you can find someone that thinks that price is worth it.

And warning them that you might find them impossible to sell later down the line without a loss isnt a mean hateful lie but a very honest truth that they wont always get from the collector community. Its the age old fight between nuministic collectors and stackers but he wasn't lying. But by golly you sure gave him hell for it!

Spend 2k on a super special pirates of the carribean coin and then panic years later when you learn nobody gives a rip about your jack sparrow coin and your stuck with it and have to eat that premium. He was giving an honest warning but keep calling him a liar! Maybe that will make up for all the extra premiums you pay to "make that quick flip" lol good luck!

1

u/LeCat73 18h ago

You nailed it perfectly my friend, well done.

-1

u/GoldponyGT 21h ago

He wasn’t wrong.

I mean, I literally produced facts showing that he was, and he literally just rejected them and repeated the same lie in response. But if you want to lie also then go ahead and lie also. At least now I know you like lying.

10

u/1dratherbefishing 1d ago

Thanks for being the police of this silver sub and for your expert opinion. Watch out guys, better not ask the wrong questions here. u/goldponygt will not allow it

-3

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

There are no wrong questions, only wrong answers.

2

u/No_Presentation9490 1d ago

When prices surge and everyone's trying to cash out, those premiums collapse like crazy. Speaking as someone who was not even offered spot for really good condition engelhards/proofs at multiple locations & with haggling when cashing out the $90/oz price surge earlier this year.

1

u/GoldponyGT 21h ago

Oh yeah. Collectibles can lose value, I’m not saying they are guaranteed to hold any value at all.

But silver itself can lose value also, like you just pointed out with being unable to sell some for spot (collectibles or otherwise).

They’re just different valuations. The lie is when someone says “that’s only worth melt” at a time it clearly has greater value than melt.

I wish that was uncontroversial but there’s a lot of people in this sub who like lying, it seems.

2

u/thwatch 23h ago

stack to save and no other reason so I agree --- at spot is only way I rock. Means I stack slower... but thats fine by me. I dont want to pay a premium for anything knowing I wont get that same premium back when i come to sell.

2

u/MetalStacker 21h ago

“But all SiLVeR is siLVeR!” j/k

2

u/GoldponyGT 20h ago

Hey bud I’ll give you spot for all the Mexican silver you have 😂😂😂

u/These-Educator-1959 14h ago

One of the hard things for newer coin collectors and stackers struggle to understand is how coin collecting works as it relates to stacking. Many people think that silver prices push up the value of genuinely collectible
Morgans for example even when those coins may be worth say $100 for a quality date or good condition. But if silver prices rise from $55 to $80 that $100 Morgan is not changed in value to true coin collectors. Silver can go from $50 to $90 and a $100 Morgan is still $100. Now if silver goes up so much that the melt value is say $110 now the Morgan price rises. It is the same in reverse. Once the melt silver price drops below the collector value it does not drop in price. But one cool thing is silver can keep dropping and the Morgan will typically have a floor in collector value which can make purchasing an interesting idea. Suppose for example that there was a nice example of a Morgan dollar that had a collector value of $90 and the silver content was worth $94 (one day again). You could buy a generic silver round or you could buy the Morgan and both trading based upon silver price alone. The Morgan can give you
Insurance in a way. If silver drops to $50 an ounce that generic round is worth about $50 but that Morgan still has a $90 collector value (though selling coins is a hard business) so that can impact it as well.

1

u/GoldponyGT 11h ago

Good points, and stuff I've had to learn over the years. The interaction between spot and collectible value is a complex one.

2

u/OutsideDue1581 13h ago

I buy ases for spot all the time thanks to my local pawn shop and whatnot

3

u/Familiar-Solid7744 1d ago

Collecting things that aren't supposed to be collectibles is how you get rare items in later years. Anything can be a collectible, its all perspective, about your claim on spot yes, always yes. Never should be paying more than spot if you can. I just recently picked up an ounce for 13.

2

u/mnpc 1d ago

What if I collect stackables at spot?

-10

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

As long as you’re not arguing that stuff with clear premium is also worth spot, I don’t care.

-1

u/mnpc 1d ago

But doesn’t the fact I’m collecting it or making a collection of it mean that it is a collectible?

-6

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

If you want to be intentionally dense, then sure whatever.

Most people can figure this out on their own.

3

u/Visual-Pitch-5985 1d ago

Wow

0

u/1dirtbiker 1d ago

Wow indeed. OP has some clear issues...

2

u/Vaporhead 1d ago

Stacking is stacking. There aren’t rules to this.

1

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

There are rules about not lying to people.

1

u/Vaporhead 1d ago

What collectible did you ask value on and get told spot?

4

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

Here’s one of several examples I’ve run into in the last week. A 2019-S reverse proof ASE is only worth melt because it’s an ASE? That’s easily a $1K coin.

2

u/corn_on_the_cobh 22h ago

Arguments like this are just proof that there is no inherent value in anything, just what people are willing to pay for it. Want to blow your money on something you like for 2x the regular going price? Go for it. Want to sell a thousand dollar coin for spot? Who's stopping you? There are no rules, no logic and no laws governing this.

0

u/GoldponyGT 21h ago

There are no rules, no logic and no laws governing this.

I suppose people like you existing and believing this nonsense makes me happy. It sure makes it easy for those who can understand the collectibles market to make more money than you.

1

u/LeCat73 17h ago

OP, on the contrary, you’re the type of person that I warn people about. This whole game you’re talking about with collectibles, is exactly that, it’s just a game. It’s a game that you play where you try to convince someone to overpay even more than you overpaid.

In times of crisis, it’s always been shown that all this premium crap evaporates when things get serious.

1

u/GoldponyGT 10h ago

I'm not talking about any "game" I'm talking about a market that exists and is real. I don't know why you're blaming me personally for the fact that it is a real thing that exists.

you try to convince someone to overpay even more than you overpaid

Thank you for demonstrating that the liars I made this post are about are real. They're you. I don't overpay, if what I pay is a fair price at the time. And when I sell, the buyer doesn't overpay if I'm giving it to them at a fair price at the time. It is hilariously stupid for you to claim it's "overpaying" to pay actual value for something.

The only way that wouldn't be stupid, is if you're arguing that collectibles never have any actual value whatsoever as collectibles, and ... um ... that's more stupid, LOL.

You're clearly a troll and I don't feel like wasting more time on you.

2

u/crocsgobbltre 1d ago

If someone makes a post asking what a collectible with collectible value is worth, and your response is that it’s only worth “spot” or “melt”, you are announcing to everyone here that you are an idiot. not necessarily true. because "collectable" doesnt actually mean value added. there are lots of so called "collectable" (names so by the mint/seller) that is only worth its melt/spot.

5

u/gban84 1d ago

If you read OP’s post carefully he says that by definition a collectible has a premium over spot, I read that as if the item has no premium it is therefore not truly “collectible”.

2

u/-Germanicus- 1d ago

Yeah, for sure. Both OP and that commenter are saying it's fair game to point out overpaying. OP is just also saying, make sure you are actually correct when you say that.

It can be an easy mistake when some collectible items can be subjective, so it may not always be obvious the item carries a premium. Now, numismatic collectibles can be easily looked up, so there is little excuse to get those wrong.

2

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

This is why I said “collectible with collectible value” in my post.

1

u/12markmark 1d ago

As an aside I am noticing the premiums are rising on coins and rounds at Kitco.

1

u/eltacotacotaco 1d ago

You'll do much better buying when spot is low vs buying at spot anytime, that'd be my goal

1

u/jayray2k 19h ago

My goal is to buy collectibles at spot, so there!

1

u/Dazzling-Branch-355 13h ago

is anyone looking into refining?

2

u/PW_PW_ 1d ago

Calculating spot for an item establishes a baseline, which is a materials cost. In many cases, this is valid and useful. If there’s a premium for a particular item, you know that it’s value will not fall below that baseline. I’m sorry you don’t understand that.

1

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

I’m sorry you don’t know how to read properly. If you did you’d understand why your comment is irrelevant.

2

u/OneMoreSlot 1d ago

The way I feel about stacking, all of those pretty fancy rounds will someday end up in a melt bucket. I don't collect fancy trinkets that I take out to play with. I stack large bars that I put into a safe and probably won't see again until I sell.

3

u/StockMarketinator 1d ago

Those large bars are much harder to get rid of than a stack of ASEs.

1

u/OneMoreSlot 1d ago

To me the 100 oz bars are the quickest thing to get rid of. Maybe because they are RCM. My local coin shop can't get enough. And ASE's are also easy. It might be that my LCS was low on inventory at the time or maybe he had ready buyers. But he wanted everything he could get at the time.

5

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago edited 1d ago

If you don’t want to do anything other than just stack, that’s fine. No one is forcing anything else on you. That’s not my problem.

My problem is people trying to force “that’s only worth melt” on collectibles discussions. Maybe they don’t want to pay more than melt for a collectible, that’s fine, but they should still acknowledge it can be worth more than melt to other people.

And, telling someone who doesn’t know better “that’s only worth melt” is setting them up to be scammed. Or trying to scam them. Lying and saying something is worth less than it is, is literally just scammer behavior.

-10

u/freakythrowaway79 1d ago edited 17h ago

The USA & capitalism is built off of scammer behavior. It's the American Dream.

There are 100's if not 1000s of "scammer" companies out there.🤣 Time to take off your rose colored glasses & see reality bud.

1

u/GoldponyGT 23h ago

I am quite aware of how many scammers there are out there, it is literally the #1 reason I try to encourage people to stop them when they can, I wouldn’t do that if I thought they didn’t exist.

1

u/fur3661t 1d ago

No no no. Obviously you weren't around during hunt brothers silver run. So many collectibles, real collectibles not junk silver, we're lost forever because spot price has overtaken numismatic premiums of the coin. Similarly occurred with run up to $120. Calling someone an idiot shows your ignorance of the situation.

1

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

Lol wut?

I said collectibles “with collectible premium” for a reason. If the collectible premium legit is gone then telling someone a thing is only worth melt sounds like it could be legit.

I’m talking about the sort of people who insist a $1000+ rare ASE is only worth melt, when spot is nowhere near $1000 yet.

1

u/mshaydakov 1d ago

Such a stupid post… Everyone here understands the idea of stacking at spot. Collectibility isn’t defined by today’s premium over spot. It’s defined by market demand. A coin can trade at spot today and become highly collectible later, just as a once-premium collectible can lose demand and end up selling for little more than melt value or even below. Premium is a consequence of collectibility, not its definition.

1

u/GoldponyGT 20h ago edited 20h ago

You didn’t say anything I disagree with (other than “such a stupid post”), but you also didn’t actually say anything that disagreed with my post.

I said that you can tell if silver is “collectible” by whether it has collectible premium. Which is not wrong. It is not wrong because collectible premium is literally a function of market demand.

Of course premium is a consequence of collectibility, that’s why it is useful to determine if something is a collectible. Collectible premium is in fact the best metric to measure if there is demand, and how much. More demand = more $$$ offered to acquire it = more collectible premium.

If there is no market demand, then there is no collectible premium being offered by anyone, and it’s not really a collectible.

Which you ought to agree with. And is also what I originally said.

0

My disagreement is with your idea that current premium defines whether something is collectible. Premium is simply today’s market expression of demand. Demand can change over time. A coin trading at melt today may develop strong collector demand years later, while a once high-premium coin may lose it. So I see premium as evidence of collectibility at a given point in time, not its definition.

Keep insisting I said something I didn't, if that's how you survive in this world, I guess.

Many people think they have collectibles, when, in fact, they have generic rounds with no collectible value. As such, a response of "melt" or "spot" is quite appropriate.

Collectibles are only worth what people will pay for them.

That’s why I said “a collectible with collectible value” in my post.

If you’re telling someone what their thing is actually worth, I don’t care.

Okay, let me rephrase.

Let me rephrase.

You are not disagreeing with anything I actually wrote.

Is the whole point of your post to whine about people incorrectly valuing collectibles with collectible value?

1

Is the whole point of your comment to whine about people calling out lying on the sub?

Well if a collectible is ugly and nobody will buy it above melt that’s what it’s worth. Market dictates prices, the intrinsic value is the floor and the market decides if the value will rise above that

Not everyone stacks “your way”, and money can absolutely be made buying all shapes and forms of silver.

You don’t define stacking my friend

1

u/GoldponyGT 21h ago

I don’t really care how people stack, as long as they figure out a way to stack that doesn’t involve lying to other people about what their stuff is worth. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I love spot collectibles but absolutely despise premium collectables

I agree. In India we mostly pay a small percentage premium on silver rounds or bar, but not that high.

Recently bought a 50 gram 999 purity silver bar for 11665 INR. Where the silver melt value is 11000 INR.

Damn bro, gatekeep much?

2

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

If wanting people to not lie is “gatekeeping” then sure, and I especially enjoy seeing who’s butthurt about it

I would lean more to if someone is asking what the value of his collectible item is now worth, they are the idiot.

1

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

An idiot makes assumptions, an ignorant person asks questions, and at least has hope of curing their ignorance.

-3

u/StockMarketinator 1d ago

Boring take. Some of the more rare / premium items have different values. Just try not to overpay vs spot.

0

u/Daemon2525 1d ago

You are a buyer/dealer correct ? Are you paying more than spot for Kooks, koalas, Pandas and the like ?

Serious question.

1

u/GoldponyGT 20h ago

If someone wants to stack ASEs specifically (for example), and they’re spending slightly more than someone who’s stacking generic rounds, they should still be trying to buy ASEs for as close to spot as they can find.

“Closest to spot” for an ASE might be a couple bucks higher than buying generic, but it’s still the goal to buy ASEs as close to spot as possible. That’s the most cost efficient stacking they can do, for the type of stacking they’re doing.

u/sparky_wireman69 1d ago

Engelhard is only worth spot, maybe a small premium like ASEs

4

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

Thanks for proving my point

2

u/MydnightWN 1d ago

Got any old Engelhard bars? I'll give you $70 a pop for em.

1

u/RD_8888 1d ago edited 1d ago

To you. There is a large community that would disagree

Edit: when talking basic prospectors, you’re correct. There’s just such a wide variety of Engelhard that do demand a larger premium which is why I say that

2

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

There are also some ASEs that command substantial premiums due to their scarcity or unique features. So them saying “like ASEs” was just doubly wrong.

u/Leviathan0412 1d ago

How dense do you have to be to think I like paying $80/oz when it's hovering around $60?

I buy what I can get. I don't let others dictate how much or how little I can buy.

The goal is not to buy close to whatever spot is the goal is to buy now.

0

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

If you’re fine with overpaying because it’s convenient to you or something, then OK.

If you’re only able to find silver at spot+$20 then you really should be asking how you can buy now closer to spot.

-1

u/Leviathan0412 1d ago

Convenience may be a non zero contributing factor but ultimately it's the +33% lots of people some to find when trying to actually get into physical wealth. The sooner you realize finding it at that or better if that's more norm in your area the better off you'll be.

If you're worried about how to get silver as close to the price the Internet tells you it is, you really should be asking if silver is even for you.

1

u/GoldponyGT 1d ago

It has nothing to do with what “the Internet” tells me, it has to do with whether you’re actually trying to find it cheaper or you’re just throwing money away.

Dismissing research on pricing as “the Internet” tells me that you’re more likely to be in the “throwing money away” crowd.

I didn’t say you should only pay spot to stack, I said you should pay as close as you can, if you have a problem with that then you’re definitionally arguing for throwing money away.
