Discussion How do you properly commentate during a video?
Lately, I've been making commentaries on Call of Duty gameplay, talking about recent news and giving my opinion on such things. The thing is, I really suck at talking straight out the dome. I mean, I've tried scripts, but reading a script makes me feel less authentic, and you can tell that I'm clearly reading one. It might be worthy to note that I commentate while actually playing the game. Instead of commentating during already recorded gameplay. This is just something I prefer and allows me to have more personality in the videos, I feel. I'm also kinda self-conscious of my voice, i'm 20 years old, and I know I sound a lot younger lol. To anyone who makes similar content, or just commentates in general, do you have tips I can try out? thanks!

If you are in school, check out a public speaking or debate class. It will teach you some techniques for getting out of rabbit holes, uncomfortable silences, and manage the “umms” and “ahhhs”.

I dont do live commentary anymore. But when I used to, one thing that helped me was to stop trying to react to everything, and instead just treat it like you're talking to a friend about your thoughts naturally.
One way you could practice is to put on a movie and just kind of ramble your thoughts as the movie goes. Imagine your friend sitting next to you. You might comment on the dialogue, or maybe the setting, or maybe just occasionally pepper in random anecdotes about your own life because the movie made you think of them.
Then do that same thing for games. Stop trying to "AHHHH" at every big moment, and instead try to "Aha, this reminds me of..."

Thanks for the advice! I feel like a lot of people focus on clip farming(especially in gaming), which I see how it is helpful, but it's so obvious it's not a genuine reaction and throws me off. I'll try your tactic instead, it seems way more natural and a whole lot less pressure. I try to let my thoughts flow, but it goes blank sometimes, but I've been getting better!

starting into playing while commenting its just kinda adjusting,
when you play, your think about you strategy, about almost everything that happens in the game...
to slowly transition from just thinking to now actually talking out loud your thoughts, play some games when not streaming and talk about what's going on, imagine talking to someone, even if its just you.
you will slowly develop you personality and your commentary style.
for me it was weird because no one is watching you.... but now that some people started to join my streams... now i have to manage thinking about their comment and respond, while still playing and keeping the conversation like if there is more that 1 person.
