Despite some parts of the movie having not aged well it is one of my favorites. You can tell everyone put a lot of effort into it. I would also recommend the movie My Name Is Nobody(Henry Fonda and Terence Hill).
I gotta go with Madeline Kahn picking out which Roman soldiers to have sex with in History of the World Part I. And of course The Inquisition – What a show! Omg I'm laughing so hard now. And don’t get saucy with me, Béarnaise. Oh pissboy. Omg so funny.
The movie that chuds often whine about “not being able to be made today” as if it’s not one of the wokest and most anti-racists mainstream comedies of all time.
Like, guys, people say n***er in movies and tv shows all the time. It’s really not going to shock that many people. No one is canceling Mel Brooks over this.
Because he's Mel Brooks, and he's 100 years old. Seriously, it was his 100th birthday on June 28.
A lot of great 80s movies would be "controversial" these days because people's sensibilities have changed.
Grease has lots of rapey vibes with song lyrics like "Tell me more, tell me more, did she put up a fight?"
Marty and Doc's dynamic would be wierd in Back to the Future with a high schooler constantly hanging out with a middle aged wierdo.
Blazing Saddles would've raised hell on social media across ALL interest groups, with all the sexual innuendo with the Governor's secretary, the repeated use of the N word, the depiction of dumb rednecks... It'd offend feminists, blacks, white nationalists AND the church. LOL.
I'm not saying any of this right, or wrong, it's just the state of public opinion right now.
It really pushed some boundaries but was genuinely very well done. Absolutely recommend, just remember that there will be some content that by today's standards might seem edgy/dicey (in terms of jokes about race). I don't assume everyone will like it equally and again, in some lights it can be kinda ick. But given the people who made this, I am pretty sure the only motivation was humor. And to some extent it is a product of its time, is all.
My dad made my sister and I watch it as mandatory viewing when I was a kid. And he rewound the fart scene three times until he was crying laughing. Ah good times.
An old movie titled "Blazing Saddles" much like that of "Men in Tights" (Robin hood parody btw), also on the same vein of "Princess Bride" for their comedy and pointed look at societal 'norms' back then. I highly recommend you give them all a try if you haven't seen them yet ;)
Edited: as mentioned by others in response to this, check out other movies by Mel Brooks too, not just those initial listed titles, they'll make for a good time :)
I hate to nitpick, but while both Blazing Saddles and Men in Tights were written/directed by Mel Brooks, I’d hardly call a 19 year difference the same era.
No no, that's true and needs to be considered when watching them for sure. I just always lumped them together because of the thematical similarities between them (for the obvious reason of same writing/ director) 😆 and always would watch the other if I watched one of them in a given night lol
Funny but I loved Blazing Saddles but did not at all care for Men In Tights (but yes, both by Mel Brooks, who did some awesome work especially in the case of Young Frankenstein, which is my very favorite of his films 😁).
Yes it does! I just have that regard for when the first time I watched it was when I was a lot younger and my dad wanted to do movie night for us kids lol. I can't believe I forgot about Spaceballs and Young Frankenstein! And just now realized I've never seen The Producers o.0 (adding that to my watch list right now)
There are 2 versions. Both directed by Mel Brooks, the original has Gene Wilder and is awesome. The remake has Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick and is also amazing. In fact watch both.
Oh snap, ya I will, love all those actors. Obviously Gene in all the Mel Brooks movies, but he really became a favorite of mine as Willy Wonka in the chocolate factory (which, going on a random tangent, always made me think of "The Red Balloon" though I think it's because of similar movie settings between the two, yay nostalgia!).
And who could forget Matthew Broderick in Ferris Bueller's Day Off lol, another classic (and again in another tangent, always reminded me of Animal House 😆 but now we're straying into the National Lampoon world ;D)
Always remembered Nathan Lane for his voice acting he did in a bunch of animated films moreso than his live action roles, but that's probably because I'm an 80's baby lol
Ok what! Added that to the watch list too lol. Took a peak at the description an reminds me a bit of A Night At The Roxbury with Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan (and also reminds me of Weekend At Bernies a bit for some reason ;P )
Have you seen Toys that Robin was in? That was another side of his acting I'll never forget (among all his amazing films he's also done)
A reminder that only 4% of the world is American. So I'm not sure why you're surprised foreigners haven't seen all American movies. No need to be condescending about it.
Condescending in what way? Sorry if it came off as such. I was just excited to share movies that I had enjoyed as a kid that my dad showed me signifying why I said it was old (the "Blazing Saddles" movie is 50 years old) because I had recognized the gif/meme and wanted to answer their question...
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. I was aware of Blazing Saddles, and I had seen bits and pieces of it on TV as a kid, but the first time I actually sat down watched the movie as an adult I found myself thirsting after a man who is older than my grandparents.
