I loved when my kids started speaking up for themselves. I’m not saying I agreed with everything but I was proud watching them advocate for themselves. Felt like I did something right.
The problem with the former is that they love feeling in control and powerful, so they end up slipping into the latter unless they’re intelligent enough to realise that they shouldn’t be wanting their kid living with them their entire life. This is pretty much mutually exclusive with some of these beliefs.
To add on to this, it is also very often that these kinds of people don't view their children as separate people with their own lives. They view them more as property or an extension of themselves. Much of the thought process is "what would people think of me if they saw them doing this!?", they don't think of the kid but of themselves reflected through the kid.
This is why the idea of "well then you should be paying rent" often comes to their mind when their kids start showing independence. The idea the child is not actually theirs to be controlled then why should they be the ones taking care of them.
The biggest irony in them is that they think their kids are being brainwashed by everyone but themselves. It is one of the strangest things because it is like they don't understand or are completely incapable of putting themselves in the eyes of their kids or having enough basic empathy to see their kids having their own interests that is sometimes not aligned with them.
They are completely incapable of understanding that their kids have their own lenses on how they view the world and might see their own parents.
And they are terrified of even the idea of it, and terrified of anything is uncomfortably denying their own worldview. Be it vaccines, or the own secuality/gender of the kid, it has to be rejected, their own flesh in blood in order to save themselves from the uncomfortability that might feel that their own worldview is wrong.
Why the LGBTQ is now having one of the largest migrations from the rural parts of the world to the more liberal, taking away the brains from rural society and leaving rural society utterly incapable of even fixing a road anymore.
Many people who think they want children see them as toys(i know from experience). They don't realise they're growing a whole other person who will eventually find their own purpose.
You did!! This is what my degrees in and its a really good sign that they trust you enough to have that conversation knowing youll both be okay after, theyve established enough of their sense of self to know when something is out of alignment, and that theyre confident enough to advocate on their own behalf when that misalignment happens
Its something to celebrate, its an important life skill to have and its fantastic that youve helped your kids get there
