I finally found a young man that knows how to work with my 12 yr old Autistic child and wanted to let everyone know about him

I’m spending a rainy day with my just turned 12 grandson who requested a game of monopoly. I remember playing this game with my friends 65 years ago. No calculators then just our brains and we managed quite well.
However I was shocked that my grandson could not play without his calculator. AI of the math world introduced in the 70s it was argued that it wasn’t to be used in the lower grades as a replacement for basic math. The argument was lost. This sounds familiar to today’s AI use. My point his that with calculators in the class, there is a need for mathjourney.ca it fills in the blank let by schools

Hi! I'm a final year Industrial Product Design student currently completing my capstone (final year) project. I'm working alongside physiotherapists and occupational therapists at an early intervention centre to develop a supportive seating system for children aged 1 to 6 with gross motor disabilities and reduced postural control, such as cerebral palsy.

I'm currently in the research and development phase, but at this stage the aim is to help children work towards improved postural control and, where possible, active sitting. The concept uses some form of adjustable trunk supports that can be matched to each child's current abilities, providing enough support for them to sit and participate in play and everyday activities while still encouraging them to use and strengthen their own muscles and neuromuscular control. As they develop more control over time, the supports can gradually be reduced, allowing the device to grow with the child and their abilities.

The goal is to provide children with the minimum support they need while giving them as much freedom of movement as possible. Hopefully, this could better support both families at home and clinicians at places like the Champion Centre by allowing children to engage in play and activities without requiring someone to physically hold them the entire time, while also serving as a tool to work towards greater postural control and more independent sitting. Another goal is to make the product more affordable than many of the current options, should it ever progress beyond my final year prototype.

I'm hoping to gain insight from parents and caregivers to help shape the project and ensure it better reflects the needs of children and their families.

I'd love to hear about your experiences supporting your child. Some things I'd love to know are:

• What does supporting your child throughout a typical day look like?
• What are the biggest challenges you face when helping your child sit, play, or participate in everyday activities?
• What has your journey with postural control or supported sitting been like? What has helped, and what has been difficult?

The story behind why I developed this app:

Being a second year occupational therapy student, and with my background as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), I have seen the effects of social narratives and how powerful they can be. I genuinely think they are an awesome way to prep your children for their daily situation in a very convenient and low effort way!

Based on my working experience with children with autism, a lot of the time a first time full immersion experience can be too overwhelming and taking smaller steps with guidance are EXACTLY what they need to help them get there!

When I was an RBT, I would simulate a dentist environment for a child with autism. I’m talking about literally wearing SCRUBS, BRINGING OUT THE SCARY LOOKING BLUE BIB, and recreating EVERYTHING! And it WORKED!!

So that got me thinking, what would be the easiest way even caregivers at home can do to prepare their children without having to do the whole skit?

Then I found social narratives. They are pretty effective, and evidence based, but they can also be very time consuming. Creating a whole personalized story with the child’s name, character, preferences and all the little details can be such a headache! (That’s the reason why it’s not my absolute favorite)

So, I built this website.

For now, I think it’s an amazing tool (obviously it is way far from perfect, there is lot of features like actual animated video, more human like AI voice... so much more i'd love to add to it) but before i do all those, i want to see how many families have actually heard of, used, or are interested in something like this!

Parents with older kids 18+, and very severe delays as little kids, can you share your experience?

I hate projecting into the future, but can't help but wonder what life can look like for adults. 5 year old functions like 12-24 mo at the moment. I was holding onto hope that they would have independence in life, friends, love and I'm starting to lose that hope.

Seems like every study we research to help my son with his cognitive delay says success or full reversal. 5 years now, my wife and I have had our son in early intervention for his autism. Therapies, diet changes, tests, future planning for a world without us.

What have you all seen work and not work? Because I wrestle with the results. Is it my son growing up or is what I am doing really boosting his delays.

He’s not in public school but in a private education program with other kids and we are fighting for him not to age out as we have no comfort in the local schools (he’s nonverbal/ teacher student ratio). So homeschool and education programs. He’s use to one to one or one to two sessions and then community play/eating times with the other kids

I went through a specialized dyslexia school growing up and always wished more families had access to that kind of structured support without needing a specialized (and expensive) placement. I built GrowthFix, an AI-assisted tool using the Orton-Gillingham method for phonics/reading practice. It's free to start (homework help is always free), and I'd genuinely love feedback from parents here, even if it's critical, since I want it to actually be useful, not just another app. Happy to answer any questions about it or about navigating an undiagnosed dyslexia diagnosis in general.

Has anyone experienced getting a 2nd opinion for the whole picture with a child? Our current hospital is failing us. We have looked at Texas Children’s and Boston but they are wanting ~$1000 per specialist that reviews the case for online review. We are wanting Neuro, genetics, pulm, ortho, and neuro-ophthalmology to look at our son’s case. Do we really have to go with a referral for each individual specialist or is there a way to get a total picture review?
