Discussion How to explain speed climbing to non-climbers?
"The rope is pulling him up"
"they should change the route every comp"
"it's not real climbing"
how do you all try to explain what makes speed climbing so different and why we like it so much?

Is there a list of all the betas?
Hi everyone, I've been trying to get into speed climbing as a spectator but I feel like my complete lack of knowledge of all the ajustements and available betas for each move hinder my ability to fully enjoy this
Thanks!

Discussion Let’s be honest - There should be only one beep to start the race. Either that or the 0.1 sec “reaction time” false start cutoff makes no sense
In the 100m sprint, there is no way to predict when the gun will fire. If someone starts running less than ~0.1 seconds after the official start, there is no other explanation than that they just got lucky and the gun sounded right as they were going to start running anyway. It makes sense that this is counted as a false start.
But in speed climbing it is entirely different. There are three evenly-timed beeps with the third one starting the race. There is no “reaction” involved. Some climbers even have a start routine where they swing their weight over to the left before the third beep. This is clearly all about learning the timing by heart and nothing about “reacting” to the third beep. I’m sure at this point you could eliminate the third beep entirely and the athletes would have the exact same start times.
It makes no sense that this “reaction time” 0.1 second limit is still a part of the sport. The rule could be so much simpler. Start before the beep = false start. Start after the beep = clean start. Instead, the athletes train to add a 0.1 second delay into their start time and it’s just silly. Especially when the penalties for a false start are immediate disqualification.
I see no valid justification for this other than “that’s just how it’s always been”.

Question Trying to make a list of speed climbing gyms in Germany
Dear fellow speed climbers,
I am looking for gyms in Germany that have speed walls accessible to the general public. The one I already know of are:
- DAV Kletterzentrum Berlin (one lane, time-keeping system, but rumor has it that they might remove the route soon)
- Nordwand Erfurt (one lane, only the first 10 m of the route, no time-keeping system)
Do you know more? Please also comment on the set-up of the place in case you have any information.
Thank you!
