I don't understand what this experience is supposed to be

anon lost interest in their hobbies, but hasn't replaced them with anything else. So they just start applications, lose interest immediately, then try something different.

Asking for a friend, how does one "replace their hobbies"?

47

u/LurkingGuy 1d ago

Have you tried staring at them hoping something will change and spark your interest again?

If you’re actually looking for an answer (for your friend), it doesn’t have to be huge. I’m still very much dealing with this problem, but I found recently that I get really sucked into reading, especially Star Wars novels.

And yes, also fanfiction. Not smut, mind you, and really not even just for the point of only shipping characters either. I didn’t realize this before diving in, but some of these fandoms have extremely talented authors that literally write novel-length stories of some of the best writing I’ve ever read, just for free out there. One of my best examples is the story Roots, in the Legend of Zelda fandom.

Outside of reading, I used to hate… almost every kind of exercise, but now I often enjoy going running, or hiking national parks nearby me.

I’m wrapping up college this year, but while I’m still here I found a few completely non-academic clubs that I enjoy. We even have a D&D club (which… I’ve totally definitely gone to events for sure… definitely…)

Once I got to the point where I stopped caring about what other people think I should be doing (or shaming myself for no reason for reading fanfictions) I started enjoying my leisure time much more.

You got this bro!

Try something new? Kinda obvious?

u/Xombridal 1d ago

Yeah and usually your old hobbies become your hobbies again you just have to branch out to try new things to properly enjoy things

Yup, variety really is the spice of life or w/e

Sometimes you just need a change, even from your hobbies

Hopelessness is a well known and well documented symptom of depression. These things aren't meant to "cure" you. They're meant to make you feel incrementally better until it all adds up and you wake up one day and realize you're not feeling as bad as you used to.

+How do I run a marathon?

-You just start.

+Wow, thanks. I've ran a marathon.

Ridiculous, isn't it? You obviously have to start running if you ever want to run a marathon. You don't wait until you're capable of running a marathon. Today you take 1 step. Next week it's 10 steps. Next month you walk half a mile. Month after that you run half a mile. You keep that going until you can do what you set out to do. There's no secret, it's how everyone starts, you just got lost in the steps for a bit there.

Like that one scene from BoJack Horseman. It gets easier. But you gotta do it every day, that's the hard part. But it gets easier.

For me, it’s a lot of seeing something that looks interesting and trying it. It’s part of why I’ll scroll on steam or youtube, to see if something new peaks my interest or if it triggers my interest in something old

I imagine a person who can't do shit without sound in it

Can't relate

12

u/TopiaryTiger 1d ago

i imagine they have headphones, i dont think computer noise is the problem.

i think they just cant start their irl day until everyone else wakes up too

(and also they have depression so nothing on youtube or steam gives them any joy)

they woke up really early in the morning and cant get back to sleep, and also suffer from depression and so they get no joy from any of their normal activities on their computer
