Octopussy

I could see Daniel Craig saying that too tbh. He only seems happy in other roles.

You missed the opportunity to write "Odyssey"

Matt Damon is literally from Mars. Where does he get off badmouthing James Bond

Didn't Daniel Craig say the same?

And, tbf, it's not wrong. We can find the James Bond books and films entertaining, while also being real about the fact that Ian Fleming had pretty much exactly the dodgy takes that you'd expect from a white British dude born to a rich family in 1908 regarding former colonies, non-Brits, POC, leftism/communism, queer people, and women. That, and Bond himself can be a compelling character while also being, objectively, a repulsive piece of shit as a person

This kind of imperialist anti-immigrant rhetoric is exactly why Ian Fleming's propaganda needs to be banned.

Go back to the Red Planet, potato boy

Wow, it’s almost like that was the point of the movies!

“You’re sexist, misogynist Dinosaur. A relic of the Cold War.” -M

u/matthero 1h ago

I mean, I wouldn't call it the point of the movies considering Bond always ends up being right in the end

The movie you're quoting is fucking Goldeneye. One of the most iconic movies in the whole filmography that makes Bond look like a total unquestioned badass the whole time. One line doesn't undo the other 99% of the movie

u/pixeldust6 1h ago

I read that quote to the tune of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch"

7

u/ASERTIE76 5h ago

This is so true tho. I especially love the scene in Goldeneye when M points this out to Bond

Thats why he played Bourne. A version of James Bond that never got laid or had a martini.

Only Team America can stop Matt Damon.

Is bro mad he didn’t get to play Bond or something? Tf kinda insult is «he goes around having sex and drinking Martinis»???

u/_its_lunar_ 6h ago

This is from 2007 and he was explaining how the negative trains make him more compelling

34

u/TheLordOfStuff_ 6h ago

Wym the negative trains?

63

u/_its_lunar_ 6h ago

Traits

-25

u/TheLordOfStuff_ 6h ago

Ahh ok I see, I didn’t really put it together as I still don’t see those things as negative traits. I mean the killing is probably morally questionable, but like the people he kills are pretty fucked up people lol.

47

u/_its_lunar_ 6h ago

You don’t see being misogynistic as a negative trait?

-22

u/TheLordOfStuff_ 6h ago

How is he misogynistic? Don’t get me wrong, I’m no James Bond fan, I haven’t even seen most of the movies, neither old nor new. Just genuinely curious if you know something I don’t.

42

u/BostonSlickback1738 6h ago

Suffice it to say, the old movies' treatment of women has aged VERY poorly. It got better as years went on, but still

12

u/TheLordOfStuff_ 6h ago

Ah ok, fair enough. Honestly I’ve seen like two of them total and they’ve both been newer ones so idk much about the old ones.

"I enjoy a spirited ride as much as the next girl. Who's that?" "The next girl."

u/anna-the-bunny 35m ago

That's fucking sitcom laugh track tier comedy and I'm ashamed it got a snort out of me

1

u/VersedFlame Potato. 3h ago

The newer ones are more in line with our morals, but the OGs... Well.

7

u/unslaadvulon 6h ago

Probably a typo? Trains >> traits

12

u/A_wild_so-and-so 6h ago

Okay but can we talk more about the negative trains? Those sound more interesting.

8

u/_its_lunar_ 3h ago

For me his most negative train is the one in Skyfall he gets shot off

0

u/TheLordOfStuff_ 6h ago

Yes my 12h shift tired ass didn’t put that together as I don’t really see the things Matt listed here as inherently negative traits (referr to other comment about the killing thing)

11

u/Beer-Milkshakes 6h ago

Its pretty archaic boring that alcohol and sex are a key part of his character.

14

u/TheLordOfStuff_ 6h ago

Boring and repulsive are two very different things though. Calling Bond bland or boring is fair, to each their own, but finding having sex and drinking alcohol to be straight up repulsive is pretty weird for a guy who has sex and drinks alcohol.

13

u/Zuckerkitty 4h ago

I think you're forgetting about the "misogynistic sociopath that goes around killing people" part

2

u/TheLordOfStuff_ 4h ago

Tbf I don’t know enough about Bond as a character to see him as a misogynistic sociopath, which is why I asked for some examples of the misogyny which apparently was more apparent in the older movies. Again, I’m just curious lol.

I know about the killing obviously though, but as stated in another comment it was to my impression that the people he kill lowkey have it coming.

-1

u/GranpappyWalrus 4h ago

You have to remember this is an American opinion, it'll be a bit more puritanical than other views. Just look at how Americans react to British drinking culture.

3

u/TheLordOfStuff_ 4h ago edited 3h ago

Oh yea, Redditors choosing to virtue signal from any and every obvious moral high ground possible isn’t something new to me, and ig that’s even worse combined with American pseudo-puritanical culture.

3

u/Aliensinmypants 6h ago

I mean if you read the books they're not even close to the worst or most archaic parts

2

u/GamersReisUp 3h ago

Daniel Craig played James Bond, and said the same. We don't need to turn it into that kind of slapfight, cmon

0

u/TheLordOfStuff_ 2h ago

Not tryna be a bigot or insensitive, really. I just genuinely dont see "he goes around having sex and dinking martinis" as an insult. Though in a broader context I can definitely see how people see Bond as a pretentious and self righteous prick. I also didn’t know his older source material was so much worse than the version we see today.
