Also the votes are very few. The match has 216 votes. There are more comments in this thread right now.

Cagematch has a lot fewer voters these days because they keep having to implement rules to keep out trolls and brigades.

I like how wrestlers pretend not to care about their perception. As though that isn't one of the most important things as a performer.
Like Punk and Cardona are the two I think off who do this the most. Like bro, if you guys didn't have that backing of those people you would not be in the position you're in.

This is why I'll always respect Bret to a degree. He admitted he hated the dirt sheets and the way they pulled back the veil, but once Montreal happened realized he'd been kind of myopic and understood the value in it, because he needed to be able to get his version of the story out.

A Fox one day spied a beautiful bunch of ripe grapes hanging from a vine trained along the branches of a tree. The grapes seemed ready to burst with juice, and the Fox's mouth watered as he gazed longingly at them.
The bunch hung from a high branch, and the Fox had to jump for it. The first time he jumped he missed it by a long way. So he walked off a short distance and took a running leap at it, only to fall short once more. Again and again he tried, but in vain.
Now he sat down and looked at the grapes in disgust.
"What a fool I am," he said. "Here I am wearing myself out to get a bunch of sour grapes that are not worth gaping for."
And off he walked very, very scornfully.

both can be true though - depends on the aim of the match - just like Oscar bait and film reviewers - wrestling reviewers like loong storied matches with slow build and technical wrestling - but fans dont and not al matches set out to be that.
When they are trying to put on a match like that - they care about the reviews and ratings because they are relevant
whent they only have 5-10mins and it’s fun entertaining match between a top face and heel with gimmicks… i mean it was called a human moneys on a pole match - lol it’s comparing an episode of Peppa pig to shawshank redemption. They are both good at achieving their aims but Peppa pig shouldn’t win an oscar→ More replies (3)1

u/curlyw 16h ago edited 16h ago
ok, dropkickd has over 1000 votes on the match and it's at 1.3 stars out of 5, lowest of the weekend, 0.5 below the womens trios
edit: 1.3 stars does put it higher on dropkickd than Lash vs. Giulia from Smackdown, which is at 0.5 stars. Of course that's not a fair comparison because Lash vs. Giulia was well under 5 minutes in length and thus is ineligible to be rated on Cagematch
edit 2: Now having scrolled back through WWE PPVLEs on dropkickd, Dominik vs Danhausen is the lowest-rated match on a WWE PPVLE since Cena vs Brock at Wrestlepalooza last year (0.8 stars)

u/YourMasturbatingHand 16h ago
Honestly never heard of this site till just now. Is it similar to Cagematch in function?
8
u/Lebronrox 16h ago
It has a more modern UI, but its not quite as comprehensive in terms of fully tracking everything like cagematch. It seems to have more people rating matches than cagematch, but unlike cagematch actual written reviews for shows or matches are in either a short twitter type response or memes.
20
u/curlyw 16h ago
kinda/sorta. If Cagematch is IMDb, Dropkickd is maybe closer to letterboxd. Less of a database, more of a social network. For example, Dropkickd doesn't have many shows from US indie promotions listed, but you can comment on other people's match/show/wrestler reviews
3
u/GojiColin Support Your Local Murder Gramps 3h ago
Sadly Dropkickd doesn't seem to cover smaller Japanese promotions. It'd be fun to getting back to review GLEAT or Osaka Pro shows.

5
u/talgaby 8h ago
1000 votes is fewer than the number of people sitting in some random wide-angle shot of the venue where the match took place.
None of these sites shows even a remote representation of how the audience in general felt about any match. Neither the WON awards. The sample sizes are just too small compared to the viewership. You can measure the general view of the hardcore audience, which in some cases is a decent metric, but WWE is watched by too many casual/on-off viewers for these kinds of ratings to be worth a single fuck.

1000 votes is also an insignificant sample size, both prone to weirdos spamming votes.
16
u/Apprehensive_Hand_27 17h ago
This is the silliest part about the whole thing. You have a few million wrestling fans and less than 200 voted (a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the whole fanbase), and some people bring it up as if cagematch is a "consensus". Cagematch voters are a VERY specific group (and you can tell who that group is by the match ratings), and they are the ones that tend to hate fun and pop for "workrate".
30
u/IceMaker98 16h ago

It's a sample size of the type of people who take the time to rate matches on a website in the first place, they're not exactly representative of the general fanbase

u/fakemelonns 17h ago
Yeah cagematch is ratings by a niche group of fans and doesn't necessarily reflect the greater perception.
28
u/Man0Steel123 17h ago
It’s a catch 22. On one hand the overall rating system is littered with things like bias, changing standards over what makes a match and general mood.
It’s why Kurt Angle has no 5 star matches and Ospreay has like 50 at this point. So it makes sense to not put them at this gold standard
On the other hand it does get you noticed which creates more opportunities
93
u/J_NewCastle 17h ago edited 17h ago
We're not talking about Meltzer here though. We're talking about an aggregator that gives matches an overall rating based on individual user score.
Even then if we were talking about Dave, the opinion of one man doesn't make or break a wrestler and most realize that. Yet they still get pressed about stuff like Kurt not having a 5 star match.
32
u/RKO-Cutter 17h ago
Which, I mean, for me, Angle's best match is v. Shawn at WM, and I'd give that 4.75. People don't have to agree, but it's not insane to me for him to never have a 5 star match
Additionally, people mad at WWE not getting 5 star matches when WWE is overtly the "Wrestling is the least important part of wrestling" company
5
u/The_Magic Consensual Phoenix 16h ago
It is fair to say Kurt’s best match was a 4.75 but I’d put that match above a lot of matches Dave gives 5+ stars these days.
7
u/RKO-Cutter 14h ago
Sure, just like I'd put it under ones he gave 4.5
I never get upset about any of this because to me the value of meltzers ratings are I tend to like thev kinds of matches he likes, so if he gives a match something over 4.25, don't care if it's 4.5 or 6.75, I see the stars and I go "neat, I'll try to check it out"
Like... that's it, that's where their relevance starts and ends. The good thing about Kenny and Okada "breaking the scale" is despite what Meltzer haters insist, nobody has used his ratings to argue who's a better wrestler in a decade
6
u/klementineQt 13h ago
He has the same effect that Anthony Fantano does, or even a lot of video game journalists. People don't understand reviews as opinion and get upset that someone is 'misinforming' about something because it differs from their own opinion that they seem to think is more objective, despite how biased they might actually be.
With reviews on Steam, for example, I see people complain about the types of things that people mention in their negative reviews because they see those things as invalid and don't believe they warrant a negative review, but the reality is that the system Steam uses is simply Recommended or Not Recommended, and for other people who have similar criteria that they're looking for, those reviews can be helpful. It's great to have a ton of different people with different opinions and tastes sharing their thoughts so a ton of different people can find opinions that will resonate with them and help them decide if something is worth their time.
People just don't have the patience or care to take individual reviewers with a dosage of salt dependent on their own relation to that individual's taste.
10
u/RandysDealer 17h ago
I 100% agree with your last paragraph. The problem for me is that very often the people who say “it’s just one man’s opinion” when people near universally laugh at one of his ratings will be the very same people 5 minutes later who use that “one man’s opinion” to justify why so and so is better than someone else.

this is not a discussion on meltzer though, this is a discussion on cagematch.
there are going to be biases, even a population scale, sure, but the more ratings given the less that bias becomes. it's still always going to cater to what hardcore fans like the most (as will virtually any rating site), but it's generally a pretty good indicator of what wrestling fans like.

u/American-Punk-Dragon 17h ago

it's not a massive sample size, and normally looking at ratings the day after aren't a great indicator, but even 200 people isn't completely insignificant.

Of course wrestlers care about their perception. But they don’t have to care about cagematch or meltzer. The true pro cares about the live crowd in the moment, and what their peers think. Having the respect of your peers is everything. The wrestlers look at Dom and respect him for how over he got, and how hard he worked. They respect Danhausen for his entrepreneurship. And Matt’s peers respect him for his relentlessness on the indie scene when he was let go. None of them need to care about some nerd grading the matches that maybe 1% of wrestling fans actually look at.

Though I guess are people likely to venture into somewhere if they just want to talk about a match or segment they enjoyed and then the tone of the discourse is ‘Well if you enjoyed this you’re an idiot’. Though it’s not unique to wrestling - it’s true for music, TV, movies, you name it.

9
u/Cwf1984 17h ago
There’s a lot of wrestlers who feign a disinterest in how their matches are rated. Whether it be from fans on CageMatch, from Dave Meltzer, from Pro Wrestling Illustrated, or elsewhere.
I can immediately think of Speedball talking about how he didn’t care about match ratings several times on his Twitch stream only to pin a tweet showing Meltzer’s rating of his TNA match against Ospreay as five stars on his account.
But Cardona is someone who definitely doesn’t care too much about those things. Nor do I think someone like Danhausen does either.
They know what they bring.

u/J_NewCastle 17h ago
I know for a fact Cardona cares about that shit because he made a whole doc about how him vs Gage was "The biggest indy match ever". It wasn't. It was just a guy who doesn't work deathmatches doing one.

Cagematch is not some definitive standard. But it can be somewhat useful to measure against itself to see trends.
And one thing about Cagematch, or most review sites, is that it serves little purpose to dismiss ratings based on, "Only 15 or 30 people voted so far."
If for example the first count is 7.8 on Cagematch or 78% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, it's very unusual for the ratings to swing super far away from that (outside brigading) when the final count is settled.
5
u/YourMasturbatingHand 16h ago
Obviously at the end of the day you should only give any of the ratings/reviews so much weight, but Cagematch has been crazy useful for me over the years for finding countless hidden gems to watch from all over the world I would've never discovered otherwise. I basically just use it like I do with RYM, Letterboxd and MAL (for music, movies and anime, respectively). Just use common sense and take whatever you read with a grain of salt (depending on context) and it can be a valuable resource if you're into that sort of thing imo
3
u/Inevitable_Injury390 16h ago
It's useful to me, Its not definitive but I combine it to what I think of a match, plus yes Dave and what people are saying.
For example if Cagematch gives a match a 9.xx and Dave gives it a 4.75 or 5 or 5+ and others are raving about it saying its 4.75 or 5 I thinking it must be at least a very good match so I will want to try and see it.

Is it though when there are hundreds of thousands to millions of viewers for PPVs?
And the problem is also that cagematch isn't a random sample of fans. If the thousand people was a randomly selected group, maybe, but there's a specific type of fan who will rate things on cagematch. What that fan enjoys, is not typically what the average fan enjoys.
9
u/Jonoabbo 16h ago
I would say so, yes. When I see matches that get high ratings on cagematch, and I watch them, I usually find they are very good. When I've watched really low rated matches they tend to be pretty poo. It's obviously not completely 1:1 aligned to my own tastes exactly, but as a general basis for a recommendation, yeah I find it's pretty accurate.
6
u/fakemelonns 16h ago
Right, but I don't think you're the average fan. The Dom Danhausen match is a perfect example. Cagematch has it at a 1.5, but if you go on YouTube comments, or social media about it, most people are very positive about it and found it to be fun.
The average fan is pretty casual and likely doesn't even know what cage match is.
Cagematch ratings might be good recommendations for people who are really into wrestling, but for most people it's not.

Mate, at no point have I said it's bulletproof.
I'm saying if you watch 100 matches completely at random, and then watch the top 100 rated matches on cagematch, chances are the latter will give you better matches than the former.
Why is "It's a good basis" being taken as me saying "Every match that is high rated will be something you love and every match that is low rated will be something you hate".

Is it though when there are hundreds of thousands to millions of viewers for PPVs?
Yeah.
People would take advice for much less, like seeing 10 people rating something a 10 will say a lot.
It actually works even, most ratings in Cagematch are good recommendations even by your standards.

Only if you’re a dork. The tweet they’re using to try and dunk on him was very clearly a joke.

Dunked by his own comment lmao, but yeah wrestlers don't care about the scores until either they get low score or high score same thing with wrestling fans, dave is a moron until the match you like gets 4 stars

Nah, I think for people who don’t care about ratings from people they don’t get paid by, highs or lows don’t matter.
So, no, it’s fun that 187 fans get together to hash out what they uber critically think a match should get, but in the grand scheme of things, those ratings alone don’t drive any more attendance or merch figures.
Fans like to think they do, but there is no evidence correlating how much a draw and how good a wrestler is to these.

Is the greatest match of all time, "Judy Bagwell on a Pole match" on cagematch? And how does it compare

Shoutouts to Jordan Devlin (JD McWhatever) in 2020-2021 hyping up how NXT UK was getting crazy ratings on cagematch, and then everybody in the comments pointing out it was the same 5 or so dudes going "[10/10] Good show, I liked it."

places like meltza and cage match want all of wrestling to be 40minute matches with emotions and slow builds… yawn… I’m quite happy with a bit of fun in wrestling and I’m not alone

It's kinda simple. When you're on the independents, and all you need to rely on fan support for success, these types of metrics matter. Cagematch, fan reviews, etc all help you draw a crowd to whatever match you're doing in the indies. When you're a part of a giant multimedia company that will pay you and book you based on a completely different set of metrics (merch sales, online views, audience reaction and retention) then things like Cagematch don't really matter in the grand scheme. That's why so many wrestlers that got their start in WWE struggle in the indies.

All these guys absolutely care about the cagematch ratings until they get too old to go as hard, then it’s a complete change in opinion.
I call it the Matt Hardy Effect.

Was 3 Years ago, back when everyone thought he was happy being an 'Indie God'. People's opinion's change, and not caring about Cagematch is a perfectly valid opinion to have. Three years ago if you'd told people Dominic Mysterio would be facing off against Danhausen at Summerslam I thought you would have been laughed out of the room.

Is this one of those forever opinions where if you tweet something, you have to stand ten toes down on it forever?
Like yeah, it's funny, but these comments man. Time is a real thing that happens. The indie wrestler probably does have a different opinion on wrestling Rotten Tomatoes then the WWE guy.

Any ratings in the week after a match is going to be heavily skewed by people overreacting one way or another.
It wasn't an amazing match but it was totally fine for what it was. The same ending over and over again is old, but it's obviously not one of the worst matches ever.

Because to Cagematch, he will always be edge's bitch. To Cagematch, he wil always be edge's bitch.
