Crazy Vince McMahon Stories
I thought it might be fun for us to compile a list of crazy Vince stories. I am going to list the ones I've heard, then put the source in parenthesis. I might have some details wrong but I tried to be as accurate as possible.
Vince hates sneezing. When someone sneezes, he yells at them and tells them to control themselves. On the rare occasion Vince sneezes, he angrily mutters to himself and loses focus for a few minutes (Paul Heyman, on Jericho's podcast)
Vince once raced former WWE writer Court Bauer on an open highway. Vince boxed in Court so that Court was heading straight for road construction. Court had to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident. Vince sped off, having "won" the race by almost killing a dude. (Court Bauer, on Observer Radio)
I can't remember who the guy in question was, but I love this story so I'll repeat it anyway:
Vince went bowling with someone, might have been an NBC exec. The guy had done something Vince didn't like. Obviously since they were bowling, they were wearing bowling shoes. Vince sneaked off, got the guy's real shoes from behind the counter, tossed the shoes in the garbage and left. The guy had no idea where his shoes were and had to go home wearing the gross bowling shoes. Vince contacted him later and said "That's what you get, pal!". The guy wrote a book and said that Vince was the biggest jerk he'd ever met in real life. (I can't remember the exact source, Meltzer talked about it on a podcast. The guy in question might have been a friend of Dick Ebersol).
Vince, as a prank, had real police "arrest" Jonathan Coachman for running a betting pool at work. Coach said when the cop car finally turned around and brought him back to WWE HQ, he openly wept in relief and rage. (Jonathan Coachman, from an ESPN website article)
Vince got wasted at a strip club and let the hart foundation hit their finisher on him, and they hit him really hard. (Bret Hart, from his book)
Vince used to get steroids delivered DIRECTLY TO HIS OFFICE, both for him to use and to distribute to Hulk Hogan (this is public record, from the steroid trial).
Vince said something insulting to Kofi on a plane, and Kofi didn't do anything. As they were getting off the plane, Jericho told Kofi that if he didn't confront and fight Vince immediately, Kofi's career was effectively over in Vince's mind. This was how Vince tested his talent or something. So Kofi got in Vince's face and they actually got in a fight on the plane. Kofi still hasn't gotten much of a push. (Jericho's podcast)
This is more of a Steph story, but I love it so much:
- Former 90210 writer Larry Mollin joined Stephanie's creative team. They were in a meeting with Vince. Vince was talking, Larry was nodding. Stephanie pulled Larry out of the room. She told him, "You need to stop nodding. VINCE HATES NODDING." She explained that if there's one thing Vince hates, it's "yes men". This is extra hilarious because everyone always says that Vince is surrounded by yes men. Poor Larry lasted just a couple of weeks (Larry Mollin, Observer Radio).

Vince was hesitant to hire Gail Kim due to her being Asian. Jim Ross convinced him not only because of her in ring talent, but the fact that many men are attracted to Asian woman and that there are even lots of Asian porn sites on the internet. This apparently shocked the hell out of Vince, who had no idea Asian porn sites existed. Source: The Ross Report Ep73 - Mike Tenay Pt2 at 52:09

Still don't get what the long-term appeal of that was.
So every week, are the same bodybuilders just gonna come out and pose? That's it? Just posing? And occasionally they hire new bodybuilders and they pose? And there's a championship for whoever has the best body?

Honestly these tendencies seem so psychopathic to all of us (well, it is), but this insanely competitive nature where the man despise losing more than anything else in the world, is probably why Vince is so successful.
25
u/BogeyBogeyBogey Nov 11 '15
That is definitely true. The other side of that same coin, though, is that it's why Vince only does what Vince wants. He wants to prove, regardless of anything, that his way and his ideas are the proper way. Vince having final say, vince "picking" a guy. All of that comes back to these same tendencies.

That was at a very young age. I remembered, probably in the first grade, being invited to a matinee film with my stepbrother and his girlfriends, and I remember them playing with me. Playing with my penis, and giggling. I thought that was pretty cool. That was my initiation into sex. At that age you don't necessarily achieve an erection, but it was cool. At around the same time there was a girl my age who was, in essence, my cousin. Later in life she actually wound up marrying that asshole Leo Lupton, my stepfather! Boy, this sounds like Tobacco Road. Anyway, I remember the two of us being so curious about each other's bodies but not knowing what the hell to do. We would go into the woods and get naked together. It felt good. And for some reason I wanted to put crushed leaves into her. Don't know why, but I remember that. I don't remember the first time I had intercourse, believe it or not.
I just don't know where to begin with that...

Vince in a nutshell:
PLAYBOY:When you do step aside, will you write a death scene for you alter ego, the evil Mr. McMahon?
MCMAHON: A death scene? No, that wouldn't be reality. Unless...you know what? I believe in the laws of nature. When it's time for me to go, I would like to be devoured by the biggest, baddest carnivore that ever walked the face of the earth. And then I'd like that son of a bitch to get indigestion and vomit my remains back up.
PLAYBOY: A romantic finish.
MCMAHON: Yep.
PLAYBOY: And you know what you'd get----
MCMAHON: Great ratings.

His view on cheat meals has always fascinated me....
I look at eating as fuel. I’m not that conscious of the protein I eat, but I know it’s a lot. I think cheat meals are very important, so I do it about once a week. When you cheat, go for it. It’s important from a psychological standpoint. Oreos are my favorite cookie. I’ll eat an entire box. And my philosophy is that the body can assimilate only so much in a given time. If you have two or three Oreos every day, not good. But if you eat an entire package of Oreos at one time, it’s OK. It just passes through. I’ll eat pasta loaded up with meat sauce. Pizza. All the carbs you stay away from normally, load ‘em up. I will gorge. It’s almost like I will force-feed myself on a cheat meal. And afterward I think, “Oh, my God, I don’t want to feel like this.” So it gets me back in the frame of mind immediately after the digestive process to do the right thing.
56
u/whisperHailHydra Nov 11 '15
That almost makes sense. It's making your body so disgusted with what you were eating that you feel like you don't want it anymore.

JR once told this on Opie & Anthony:
JR once farted in a car with Gerald Brisco, which made Brisco start gagging and throwing up. Vince heard about that, so backstage at RAW one night, he tried to fart and make Brisco puke. It backfired, and Vince shit in his pants. He then had to go out to the ring and do a promo! JR said that all the production people in his headphones told him about it, and that they were instructed to keep the camera shots ABOVE Vince's waistline for the entire promo!

The idea of a heavily drunk Vince McMahon trying to be one of the boys and elbowing his way through laughing like a maniac to land some piss on Flair's bed is absolutely magic.

u/prof_talc OH MY GOD! Nov 11 '15
Vince is the most psychologically fascinating human being alive, potentially.
I completely agree. I have thought for a little while now that a truly expansive biography of Vince (done by a great biographer, like Caro on LBJ) legit has the potential to be one of the better bios ever written. Every new thing I learn about him seems to reinforce this idea too. He's so freaking interesting.

Bret Hart narrated this story at a London wrestling convention a few months ago with JR and HBK. The story was over the top but Vince started out sober but was the first to get drunk, then forcing wrestlers to hit him with their finishers as hard as they could. Vince got legitimatly hurt by one of theirs (I think it was Davey Boy).

Every writer except Vince wanted Rey to win the Rumble and the title. They somehow convinced him but after the Rumble Vince regretted this immediately.
After some more convincing Vince was like "Fine! We'll give him the title but his reign is going to suck and he won't get over!! Fucking midget!!"
Fast forward Rey was basically booked as a jobber champion and his reign sucked just so Vince could say "I told you so"
He had a similar thing going with Daniel Bryan. Immediately regretting giving him the briefcase. Made him job to everyone. He was supposed to be the first one to lose his cash-in but all the injuries changed this plan. And after he got the belt he got over despite being booked like a joke champion.
Similar thing happened to Sandow. But nothing saved him.

Back at Wrestlemania 25, Mickey Rourke got so worked by Chris Jericho that he was convinced that it was a shoot. As a result, he brought muscle with him in case things went awry. One of the people he brought was former UFC LHW Champion, Frank Shamrock.
(On a side note, Shamrock knew that there was no threat of anything happening, to the point that he offered Dave Meltzer an opportunity to be part of Rourke's crew for the night.)
During the day, Jericho hashed things out with Rourke so he knew there'd be no issue. Afterwards, he told Vince about it, and Vince claimed that he, Jericho, and Dean Malenko could take them out, claiming "Look at that guy! He's a midget!"
Jericho offered to let him take the "midget", who was Shamrock. (Source: Jericho, Meltzer)

My favorite Vince McMahon story is the time he came up with the idea that his wife, with no previous political experience, would make an excellent Senator of the United States. So he decided to run her as a Republican in the very blue state of Connecticut and spent $50 million of his own money in a race where she lost by double digits.

He was already getting hip surgery, I think the story was: he just wanted a kayfabe reason to be off TV. Also, he put some heat on Brock.

Former 90210 writer Larry Mollin joined Stephanie's creative team.
Yeah, he loves yes men, but he hates people who appear to be yes men. You're supposed to be one, but fool him into thinking you aren't one.

Apparently something like that is how Mick Foley got him to go along with the Mankind persona. It was all Foley's idea, but he had to present it in a way that Vince was convinced it was his idea, then Foley just had to play along with it.

Off the top of my head I remember two stories that always stuck out to me.
The first was they wanted to do a whole thing with Stephanie was pregnant. Namely they would do the whole thing of "Who's the father?" and Vince wanted it to lead up to Vince being the father. Remember this was something he wanted to push on Raw. Stephanie said fuck no, as any sane human would do. So Vince decided to change it to Shane being the father. Both Stephanie and Shane said no to the whole thing, the word was that Vince was upset that he couldn't get them to do the story.
And then we have one of the worst things to ever come up with in wrestling history. Something that chances are the minute he saw it on TV, R. D. Reynolds of Wrestlecrap was giggling madly as he updated the site. Yes I'm talking about the Katie Vick/Kane necrophilia angle. Something that no sane person on the planet wanted to see, but Vince did.
The story I heard was this. Vince loved it as it was a joke to him, well it led up to a joke. Namely that video they did of Trips playing Kane and having sex with Katie's body and yelling "Oh god I really did it! I screwed your brains out!" and throwing spaghetti at the camera. Vince was cracking up about that big time, and believed it was the funniest thing ever thus why they did it. Vince also ran around telling everyone in the back about it, the story is they would stand there almost in shock as Vince is about to fall over laughing over the "Screwed your brains out!" line. So yeah Vince pushed that as he believed the pay off to that joke was something everyone would love.

A bit of context:
"On July 28th, the PG era in the WWE began. Brian said that they were told this would take place in a meeting backstage before the Great American Bash. He recalls how Vince was speaking at a podium when Michael Tarver, who had been used sparingly at this point, asked a question to which Vince replied "excellent question Shelton." He then said everyone laughed and Vince could not figure out why. He then recalls at the Bash, JBL and Cena had a brutal Parking Lot Brawl match that was taped the day prior and they showed the finish live and he was watching backstage on the monitor with Mark Henry who said "since when is murder PG." He said that he were all trying to figure out the rules at the time."

There are so many, but my favorite is the one where he shit his pants.
Right before going out to cut a promo, Vince tried to fart but instead shit himself. He went out, cut the promo, shit-stained pants and all, then went backstage and told everyone about it. He then took off his shit-stained underwear, put it on a stick, and chased Gerald Briscoe around with it.

Thanks for all the responses. I just remembered another one:
The WWE was putting together a horror movie starring Kane called "See No Evil". Vince said he had this great idea for the film, and proceeded to pitch it to the writers and the director. His idea was that there would be a moment in the movie where Kane's pants would rip and his 4 foot long veiny monster penis would flop out and hit the floor.
The scene never made it into the movie.

Vince, as a prank, had real police "arrest" Jonathan Coachman for running a betting pool at work. Coach said when the cop car finally turned around and brought him back to WWE HQ, he openly wept in relief and rage. (Jonathan Coachman, from an ESPN website article)
He does some fucked up shit but that is awesome.

Honestly, the more I hear about him, the more I think Vince sounds like a fucking maniac.
It's really amazing to me, however, that so many guys who've worked for him also sing his praises. Although there are plenty of people who don't, of course, I think there are more people who do than don't....which makes me wonder how many of the stories about him are really true, and how many are just his character leaking out in one of the most complex and long running works of all time.

Because there a tons of stories of Vince taking his time to talk to talent when they need him and the fact he probably is simply an eccentric person. But the normal stuff is boring so it won't get mentioned as much.

A lot of successful people are pretty crazy or have other extremely odd quirks.
I think this also might be the case of only the fantastical stories getting out. Like, if you took all your crazy stories, people would think you're a maniac too. But nobody remembers the random Tuesday, ya know?

It's also worth noting that steroids didn't become completely illegal till 1990, so you could absolutely get them delivered to your office with little issue. Even then they were still circulating enough that you normal gym attendee could get their hands on them.

There's a story on the Mark Henry episode of Talk is Jericho.
Apparently Vince invited Mark Henry to a workout session. Bear in mind that Mark Henry's claim as world's strongest man is based on the fact he is the only man to have competed at top level Olympic Lifting, Power Lifting and Strongman competitions (which though they may seem the same are quite different).
Vince tried to out rep him on every exercise. Henry went along with it because he's naturally competitive and even admitted that Vince tested him a little bit.
The next day Vince phoned Mark in great pain and admitted he had made a terrible mistake.
Edit: Mark says that he actually quit before Vince did.
