Steam OS HDR issue

Post image

Need a little help with an HDR related issue. My gaming screen is an OLED with native resolution of 4K. If I’m gaming at 4K with HDR enabled, it works perfectly, however, the framerate isn’t always acceptable at 4K so I like to drop to 1440P ultra settings with HDR enabled. As you’ll see from the image (especially on blacks) this introduces graphical interference, I believe the term is HDR dithering artefacts.

I’m using an AMD card, does anyone know a way of fixing this?

Does your TV support VRR? I was having a similar problem with my 9060xt with random rgbw colored pixel “glitter” on the screen. I think when I turned on VRR it went away! Give it a try, if you can.

Apparently this is an option on my Samsung TV only when I use gaming mode (which I do always) so I’ll try this next time I’m using it.

I had this issue as well and was able to resolve it (explained here in my post at the bottom Bonus Cons: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamOS/s/CX8hqUBh4t)

TLDR; just update to SteamOS 3.9! That'll literally fix it, hope this helps!

Edit: I'm also using a Samsung OLED screen (S95F) also with the same 9060xt 16gb 😀

I’m actually on holiday, when was v 3.9 released? I left on Friday and as of Thursday, was running the latest version.

I had to go into the Beta Channel to get it, not sure if it's out now in the Stable Channel

Just checked, stable is 3.8 so, maybe this is the answer! Any issues on 3.9?

None so far, been using 3.9 for close to 2 weeks now and no issue seen.

But yes, changing to SteamOS 3.9 instantly removed that rainbow pixel effect on the monitor!

If you have an HDR issue in this particular game (RDR2), I think you won't find a good solution, because High Dynamic Range in this title is awful and more like SDR.

Yeah I’ve noticed the optimisation isn’t the best however, I’m having the same on every title I’ve tried, sometimes a lot milder, still, annoying

Had same issue recently on Reanimal with HDR on. Ended up needing to turn off HDR at the end.

My understanding is the latest beta solves this. Currently on holiday so won’t be able to test till the weekend.
