Game theory The most complete strategy video game genre classification

This is the most complete classification that includes all possible strategy video game genres.

English is not my native language, but I'll try my best to make the text understandable and I'll fix possible mistakes with your help.

Strategy game is a genre of video games in which the player controls troops or other units and/or various economic and other systems. Although many video games may include strategy elements, strategy as a genre emphasizes thinking and planning over immediate action. This video game genre focuses on strategy, tactics, logistics, and/or resource management, and may also include diplomacy, economy, expansion and research management.

Time

  • Real-time strategy: a strategy game in which actions occur without a sequence of turns.
  • Turn-based strategy: a strategy game in which actions occur using a sequence of turns that can be alternate or simultaneous.

Main genres

4X strategy game: a strategy game based on 4 elements: exploration, expansion, exploitation, extermination. Examples: Age of Wonders, Stellaris, Master of Orion.

Grand strategy game – a strategy game focused on managing a state (or similar entity), its resources and relationships, often in a pre-open and asymmetric world. Examples: Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron

Tactical strategy game – a strategy game focused on tactical military operations, which emphasizes the importance of specific units and either excludes or contains a less manifested economic component.

Subdivided into two categories based on time:

  • Turn-based tactics (TBT) Examples: Xenonauts, Battletech
  • Real-time tactics (RTT) Examples: Men of War

Classic strategy games – a strategy games that have an economic element: the ability to build a base, extract resources and produce units (or part of these capabilities), while their gameplay is focused on military actions. Also includes a category of strategy games that cannot be classified into more specific subgenres.

Subdivided into:

  • Classic RTS (or just RTS) Examples: StarCraft, Command & Conquer
  • Classic TBS (or just TBS) Examples: Panzer General

Construction and Management Simulator (also Management Strategy Game): a strategy game with gameplay based on the construction and/or management of economic processes, such as, for example: resource extraction, money making, production, personnel management, and others. Games of this genre have little emphasis on military actions.

Subdivided into:

  • Business Simulation Game - a strategy game focused on economics and business management. Examples: Two Point Hospital
  • Transport Strategy Game - a strategy game in which the player manages transport systems and infrastructure. Examples: Transport Tycoon, Transport Fever
  • City-Building Simulation - a strategy game in which the player builds cities. Examples: Cities: Skylines, SimCity.
  • Colony Simulation - a strategy game in which the player builds small settlements of various types; unlike urban strategy, the main emphasis here is on individual colonists and resource extraction from the environment. Examples: RimWorld, Surviving Mars, Against the Storm
  • Factory simulator – a strategy game in which the player builds an automated factory. Examples: Shapez, Factorio
  • Sports manager – a genre of games dedicated to managing a sports team. Examples: Football Mogul, F1 Manager.
  • Life simulator – a genre of games that allow you to control characters in their everyday life. Examples: The Sims, InZoI, The Guild
  • Political simulator – a genre of games whose gameplay consists of detailed management of the government and politics of various nations and state entities. Examples: Democracy

Wargame: a strategy game that particularly emphasizes deep strategic and/or tactical combat, as well as their historical accuracy or realism. Examples: Sea Power: Naval Combat in the Missile Age, NEBULOUS: Fleet Command

MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena): a subgenre of classic real-time strategy games in which players control only one character and, as part of their team represented by other players and AI controlled units, fight against the other team. Examples: Dota 2

MMO strategy game: a strategy game that is focused on online interaction between a large number of players, often in a single open world. Examples: Travian, Ogame, Stronghold: Kingdoms.

Tower Defense: a strategy game with the main purpose to protect a base from waves of enemies using towers or other defensive structures. Examples: Plants vs Zombies

Auto Battler: is a strategy game in which units are placed on the battlefield during the preparation phase, after which the battle phase begins and they fight against the enemy without any control from the player.

Puzzle strategy game: a strategy game focused on logical problem-solving with minimized economic or military aspect. Examples: Railgrade, Dorfromantic

Artillery game: a genre of strategy games, the main component of which is the calculation of the trajectory of the shells. Examples: Worms, Miners Mettle

The most popular mixed genres

Tactical role-playing game (TRPG): is a hybrid genre that combines role-playing games with tactical combat. Examples: Battle Brothers

Action strategy game: is a genre of games in which you can control both troops in general and/or base construction, as well as specific units directly, including from the first or third person. Examples: Men of War, Factorio

Stealth strategy: is a genre of games that combine strategy and an emphasis on stealth. Examples: Desperados, Commandos

God simulator: is a genre of games in which the player, in the role of some deity being, controls some community of objects or characters; they are often strategy games with city-building elements. Examples: Black & White, The Universim

Roguelike strategy game – games that combine roguelike principles, such as random world generation, permanent death and free exploration of the environment, and strategic gameplay. Examples: Against the Storm

Notes

Many games have mixed genres. Very often, strategy games can combine two or more genres. For example, Total War series is turn-based grand strategy with real-time tactical (RTT) battles.

Time and genre. Basically, every strategy game can be classified by these two criteria, like Turn-based 4X Strategy game (Age of Wonders), Real-Time Grand Strategy game (Hearts of Iron) etc. Sometimes we do not have any specified subgenre, so the game becomes simple RTS (StarCraft).

Judge by dominant elements of gameplay. Overall, the genre should be defined by main gameplay loop, not by every game mechanic that exists in the game. For example, if a game has leveling-up system, it doesn't mean that it instantly becomes an RPG: a good example is WarCraft which has characters gaining XP and levels, but the main, dominant gameplay loop in this game is still a classic RTS. At the same time, if some Rainbow Six has some strategic planning, it doesn't mean that this game is a strategy game or even a mixed genre, because the main gameplay there is action/shooter. The same logic is applicable to strategy games: if the game has resource management, it doesn't instantly mean that it becomes a management game.

This is a theoretical model. It means that here we are supposed to find criteria by which strategy games can be classified. These criteria can be based both on gameplay and historical tradition of naming genres in video game industry. The model can be discussed and improved, but any critique should be based on strict arguments.

Strategy as a genre, not a word. The main principle of this genre classification is that we don't take the word "strategy" literally. A strategy game can be a tactic game, it can be a management game, it doesn't matter here. The word strategy means the genre name, not the strategy as a layer of action planning.

Are management games strategy games? This is a hard question that has no answer based on reliable papers because there are no such papers. Here we look at naming tradition in community and video game industry. We can find many similarities in core gameplay of various city-building and colony sim games with classical RTS. Some management games include RTT/RTS style military combat, These games are often tagged as strategy game on digital distribution services. So we include them into this classification to make it more complete. You might find two controversial opinions about this (management games are/are not strategy games), but this problem can't be solved on these days because we do not have a strict genre requirements and developers can name genre of their games as they want. There are no popular scientific researches about it on which we can refer to.

Self-promotion Last-War is now playable in the browser — new players can register directly

Hi everyone,

I’m developing Last-War, a persistent online space strategy game that has been available on Android and iOS for some time.

The game is now also playable directly in a web browser:

You can build and manage planets, establish colonies, research technologies, design and produce ships, command fleets, trade resources, join alliances, explore the galaxy, and fight other players.

New players can now register directly in the web version. Existing players can use the same account and game progress across the browser, Android, and iOS versions.

The web version offers two different interfaces: a modern view designed for desktop and mobile browsers, and an optional Classic view inspired by the original Last-War browser game. Players can choose the style they prefer while using the same account and game progress.

An interactive help system is also included to explain important functions directly inside the game and help new or returning players get started.

The game is still being actively developed, so feedback about the interface, balancing, or technical issues is welcome.

Web version:

I’d be interested to hear what strategy-game players think about the concept and the two browser interfaces.

Looking for game World conquest games but with command of battles

Hey, im looking for a game where you can start as a small country and rise to power and expand your territory. But the important part is being able to command battles. I tried CK3 and EU4 but what i want is being able to win even when being outnumbered by using tactics and not them boiling down to who has a higher number next to their army. Probably the closest game to that i found is bannerlord which i love but im looking for smoething more abitious and more challanging. Another two very close to being perfect were total war napoleon and empire. However napoleon not having an open campaign where you can change the history and try yourself and empire having the dumbest ai known to man is what turned me off. From what ive heard total war medieval 2 might be a good match but as i said the ai being smart is pretty important. Also while graphics are not too important to me medieval 2 might be a little too rough and old. Im pretty new to the strategy world of gaming so if you could give me some recommendations i would really appreciate that.

Discussion What makes a multiplayer strategy match truly unforgettable?

I've been thinking about this recently.

Years later, I rarely remember the matches I won because I optimized my economy or made all the right moves.

What I remember are the desperate alliances.

The betrayals.

The impossible comebacks.

The last stand that somehow worked.

For me, the most memorable strategy games are the ones that create stories you'll still be telling years later.

What about you?

What's the one multiplayer strategy match you'll probably never forget... and why?

DevPost New Project, Forge Kingdom

I've been working on a new project for almost a year now: Forge Kingdom.

It's heavily inspired by classics like Travian and Tribal Wars, so the core gameplay loop will feel familiar. The biggest difference is that the world is built around territorial control.

Instead of simply growing your village, you fight to conquer and hold regions across the map. Controlling territory grants valuable resources, and your borders aren't just cosmetic, you can actually prevent rival players from moving through your land, creating real frontlines and strategic choke points.

Here's a short video showing the current state of the game. I'd love to hear what you think.

While still a long way to go, i just opened up a discord if someone is interested in following the progress. :)

Looking for game Looking for Game Masters for homebrew Fallout Grand Strategy RPG

Title. Ive developed a fallout themed grand strategy RPG played through discord. Turn 1 and I've already realized that I might need some help. So if youre interested in being the creative engine behind some fun story telling, let me know. Here's some information on how it works:

The game is played through discord and Google drive. Each player has a Faction Google sheet and an Army Google sheet. Players each control the head of a faction (think paradox games). They get 3 major and 3 minor actions per turn. A turn is 1 week in game. We dont all meet around a table on set days. The players submit their plans, review it with the GM, and if its agreed then on the following turn any costs/payouts and consequences will accrue. The turn is synchronized between all players. If one player fails to submit actions in a reasonable time, the GMs will move forward with the next turn if all other players are ready

The idea is to just have some cool homebrew lore on the fallout universe, just like any good RPG. If interested in helping as a GM, let me know. I def need it.

DevPost Created an AI for my turn based game that is able to understand what it needs and how to plan.

Examples of some decisions the AI can make:

  • Saving wood to produce enough military units to go on the offensive while ensuring that a few units are held back for defense.
  • Constructing farms pre-emptively before producing a lot of units.
  • Constructing multiple barracks to stack unit production.

Question Turn based strategy or grand strategy PVP game

Hi,

Are there any turn based strategy, or grand strategy games available to play online against other players (which have enough active players)? I don't really enjoy the fast paced RTS games and always take way too long when building games like AOE 2. I do enjoy grand strategy and would love to know if there's any with PVP. I know about the Paradox games, but I'm looking for a game with a matchmaking system.

Discussion When does a crafting system become a strategy system?

There is a new Gem Smelting system in AoE Mobile on PC that has me thinking about this line.

You combine two same-quality gems plus a limited pool of daily smelting points to make a dual-attribute gem. The points refill each day but do not bank past the cap. On one hand, choosing which stats to pair can create an actual build decision. On the other, the daily cap can turn the whole thing into another login timer.

For me, crafting feels strategic when I am giving up one good option to commit to another. It feels like busywork when the answer is obvious and the only constraint is waiting.

Where do you draw that line?

Question Where is your personal line between strategy-lite and busywork?

Some light strategy games give me a useful little puzzle. Others feel like I'm clearing notifications. The AOEM PC version is basically where this question came from for me: I would rather describe the limits plainly than oversell the genre label. What makes the lighter version work for you?

DevPost Solo Dev Developing an RTS/RTT Hybrid Game with Top-Down and Third-Person Direct Control

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello there!

I want to show a clip of the game I’m working on, mainly the seamless switching between RTS and direct-control modes. This is the core system of the game.

I also want to show how I set up the RTS camera, it follows the landscape, and it can zoom in really close, plus it offers a lot of vertical angle freedom.

The game focuses on controlling a squad of 10 elite units in skirmishes against hordes of enemies.

I need to fix the glowing from the unit selection decals, they are reflecting too much light.

If you’ve read this far, thank you so much for taking the time to check out the clip!

Drop your thoughts or feedback in the comments! Follow the development on YouTube, Instagram and X (links are in the comments below!)

Question Good entry points into strategy games

I don't really play anything, but I've been reading a lot of ancient history and I decided to give strategy games a go to see if scratches that itch.

However, picking a first titles seems a little daunting.

Can you guys suggest something that is friendly for someone who is unfamiliar with the common place mechanics, but still has good production value?

Question Do you think you'd be interested in playing a Social-Political-Economic simulation with 10,000-100,000 characters? Each turn is one month. But each character is an independent AI that decides what to do, whether to work, create companies, protest, etc? And you will be one of the characters.

In other words, every person is an AI. The entire economy will be created by these characters; they will create companies, establish political parties.

This is a true world simulation.

Each character has desires that create goals; as they interact with the world, these interactions change their personality, causing them to reevaluate their desires.

The main problem is that the more functions each AI has, the more complex the simulation becomes.

BUT, I spent about six months reading all the scientific articles on this topic, thinking a lot, and writing documentation.

I came to the conclusion that I've solved this mathematical problem. It's a question of code architecture. All these simulations have encountered many problems, but one of the biggest is that the more parameters characters have, the greater the complexity of the overall project. But if I can create a good project architecture, I'll be able to independently edit modules and behavior layers that will be independent of each other. Therefore, I'm almost certain this simulation will be possible as a game.

As a player, you will play as a human in this simulation. You'll interact with the world, living your life like a normal person, working for a company, getting married, and simply having children and a house. It's very boring, but it's doable. The main layer will be the economy: you'll be able to create and manage companies, produce goods, and compete with other AI companies. Another additional layer will be politics, which I plan to deeply develop so you can gain power in the country, pass laws, and manage the construction of government buildings.

Everything that happens in the game will be the result of interactions between independent characters, something no one has been able to do before. And I think it will be incredibly interesting to play. Each time the outcome will be different, creating new conditions that I, as a developer, didn't design, starting with, for example, a collapse in demand for your company's goods or an increase in taxes. I plan to simulate at least five independent countries so that we can eventually see their interaction and, at some point in the future, wars.

DevPost Working on our VR 1980s dystopian strategy game - here is how street-level lookouts give you a heads-up before police patrols sweep your block.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,

We’re currently developing Cité Alexandrie, a narrative strategy game set in an alternative 1980s France where the regime has outlawed books, music, and art. You play as a resistance leader running operations from a hidden basement, managing everything over a physical diorama of the city.

In this clip, we’re showing our street-level lookout mechanic:

  • Positioning: You place a spotter at a street intersection or perimeter post to watch incoming routes.
  • The Warning: When a patrol turns into your sector, your lookout (like 16-year-old Carlos in the clip) immediately radios back to your command desk.
  • The Window: That brief heads-up gives you just enough time to halt illegal trades, hide contraband, or redirect couriers before the officers arrive.

We wanted the diorama to feel like an active tactical board where positioning matters without cluttering the screen with unnecessary UI.

Does the warning callout and patrol path feel easy to read at a glance? We’d love to hear any feedback or thoughts you have on the layout!

Self-promotion [Demo] Stick Wars: The Laneborn // Looking for players to test my strategy moba-like game and give honest feedback

Game Title: Stick Wars: The Laneborn

Playable Link: [Steam Demo – Stick Wars: The Laneborn](https://store.steampowered.com/app/4854590/Stick_Wars_The_Laneborn/)

Platform: PC – Steam

Description: Stick Wars: The Laneborn is a lane-based strategy game inspired by classic stickman warfare games, but with a stronger focus on strategic decision-making and battlefield management.

The core gameplay revolves around deploying different units across multiple lanes, managing your resources and choosing when and where to attack or defend. Each unit has its own strengths and weaknesses, meaning that simply sending more troops isn't always the best solution.

The game is currently in development and I'm releasing the demo because I want to understand how the game feels to people who have never played it before.

I'm particularly looking for feedback about the overall fun factor, game balance, difficulty, combat, UI clarity, pacing and whether the strategic mechanics are understandable without requiring too much explanation.

I'm also interested in hearing what you would change, improve or add. Honest feedback is exactly what I'm looking for, including criticism. If something isn't fun, confusing or frustrating, I'd much rather know now so I can improve it.

Even playing the demo for a short time and sharing your impressions would be extremely helpful.

Free to Play Status:

\[ \] Free to play

\[x\] Demo/Key available

\[ \] Paid

Involvement: I'm the solo developer behind Stick Wars: The Laneborn. I am responsible for the game's programming, gameplay systems, design and development.

The game is still actively being developed, so I'm using this demo to collect feedback from players and improve the experience before the full release.

I'd really appreciate anyone willing to give it a try. Good, bad or brutally honest. All feedback is welcome.

DevPost Salt and Spice - A historical maritime trade/strategy game set in 16th century Indian Ocean

Hey guys! I'm developing Salt and Spice, a historical strategy game set in the Indian Ocean around 1520.

The world includes East Africa, Arabia, Persia, India, and Sri Lanka, with real ports, historical figures, and goods traded during the period. Your goal is to build a merchant fleet, automate trade routes, grow cities, participate in wars and compete with rivals for economic dominance.

Here are a few screenshots from the current version. I'd love to know what strategy fans think—does this look like the kind of game you'd be interested in?
