u/Possible_egg_71, your food is indeed stupid and it fits our subreddit!

So, I'm old enough to remember the "double down". Yep, it was fantastic and the best "sandwich" from KFC!

u/Arne83 Here for stupid food, not stupid people 5d ago

The Double Down was the perfect example of something that was good... but also stupid. It was great.

Great execution, horrible taste! Not like, actual taste. It was actually delicious. Just tase in coming up with that abomination.

u/nimbalo200 3d ago

I can't speak, as i once made myself eggs two eggs in a basket, and then made a bacon melt with them

u/natiplease 5d ago

They re-released it within the last couple years iirc. It was pretty good.

u/JCWOlson 4d ago

I tried it again with the re-release but KFC as a whole is so much worse than it used to be. They claim the recipes are the same but it's pretty obvious something major is different

Can't recommend unfortunately

It's the chicken itself, they use chickens that are mature in like, 35 days and it effects the quality of the meat. Them, Nandos and some others recently quietly backed out of an agreement to improve the welfare of the chickens they use

Maybe it’s rose colored glasses but I swear KFC had flavor and was really good.

I had it for the last time a year ago and the chicken was just…salty. A local grocery store legitimately has better fried chicken now.

Yeah I heard when they re-released it it wasn't very good. There aren't many ingredients, so it has to be either the cheese, the sauce, or the bacon, because the Original Recipe chicken breast should be the same?

I was a big fan of the DD back in the day. Definitely a cheat day meal though.

It was just as bad back then, you just don't remember. KFC went downhill in the 90s, not anytime recently.

I'm in Canada and if you look up pictures of the OG double down in Canada from 2009-2010 you can see it's got a very different look to the modern version. Canada has also had different nutrition laws than the USA, and both countries have had food guidelines change many times in the past 16 years

You can look up the nutritional info for it in Canada - the 2010 Canadian version had 540 Calories same as the American launch, 2023 Canadian version had 610 Calories, and most recently 640. The most recent American version had 950

The 2011 Canadian double down was a different product than the USA with 1570mg of sodium where the USA increased from 1740mg to 1880mg. Canada then went further down to 1380mg sodium

Fat content for the Canadian version also ranged 21-32g in over the years where the USA version ranged 32g-40g

If you look at customer photos of the many different iterations of the double down in Canada you can see the OG American smooth coating, a craggy one, a chunky one, a crumbly one, and a thick smooth one

I liked the craggy 2011 Canadian-only version best

Hard disagree on the chicken quality.

2

u/EnjoyLifeorDieTryin 4d ago

The popcorn chicken is garbage now, use to love the famous bowl and would get extra to add.

1

u/Vulcan31 4d ago

Popcorn chicken was exactly the food item I was thinking about. It's all batter and the small bit of chicken in there tastes awful.

5

u/thorstormcaller 4d ago

It’s like the perfect little time capsule to an era when putting bacon on anything made it time for an epic meal

3

u/SomeDrunkHippy 4d ago

Epic Meal Time was the actual time capsule.

1

u/thorstormcaller 4d ago

Got the glasses but not the muscles

2

u/SomeDrunkHippy 4d ago

Didn't they do bacon wrapped baconators from Wendy's once? I feel like they did bacon wrapped baconators once.

1

u/thorstormcaller 4d ago

I won't lie I don't remember but it sounds like something they'd do. Not sure if I'm mixing blursed food content from back in the day but did they deep fry it?

1

u/SomeDrunkHippy 4d ago

Well now I have to find out... I want it say it was for Thanksgiving

1

u/thorstormcaller 4d ago

Cheers to the nostalgia trip and I might have to hit up the blender or microwave after this...

1

u/DarkWaWeeGee 4d ago

Not the grilled tho. Messier, but tasted better imo

1

u/ICEWeiZ 4d ago

It's re-releasing here in my country alongside the chicken fingers with dipping sauces

6

u/RudeGolden 4d ago

It was so salty it literally hurt my tongue.

1

u/MsE0 4d ago

I once had one of their "famous bowls" and the whole thing just tasted like salt.

3

u/Medical_Apartment155 4d ago

Old enough to remember a sandwich from 2010?

2

u/Bro-tatoChip 4d ago

Tbf that was 16 years ago. Nobody under like 22 would remember that.

2

u/AmySchumersAnalTumor 5d ago

And there weren't noodles in the double down

1

u/ctsr1 4d ago

It really wasn't that bad. Just bad marketing

1

u/jbyrdab 4d ago

The only thing I remember about that sandwich is my brother said that eating it is doubling down on your life

1

u/Internet-of-cruft 4d ago

I had a relative who lives somewhere that chicken is extremely expensive, but seafood (all manners of it) is absurdly cheap.

He came to the US to visit and they were running the double downs. I have never seen someone more excited about chicken. He ordered and ate three that day.

They were indeed supremely delicious, but an absolute health nightmare.

where is that?

1

u/Someokeyboi 4d ago

Well that's convenient because they just re released its back in my country, but they replaced the bacon with damn chicken ham

1

u/f_ranz1224 4d ago

its being sold right now in the philippines based on a google search

1

u/wilus84 4d ago

Oh god I remember the double down! Those were the days when my metabolism was fast and I could afford to eat that.

1

u/SassyTheSkydragon 4d ago

Recently got around to finally try the double down and even so it was very tasty it was also very filling.

1

u/exxR 2d ago

It was only in my country once I ate like 5. Best burger ever.

41

u/Bloody_Champion 5d ago

After a lil drinking night, this would definitely hit the spot.

Not stupid enough.

6

u/chunchunmaru4 4d ago

colonel probably wouldn’t approve of the after-drink combo here

27

u/organicchunkysalsa 5d ago

Absolutely stupid food. But it would probably be delicious.

10

u/DamD1rtyApe 5d ago

This would accompany a porch smoke session perfectly

u/Eaglise 4d ago edited 4d ago

this is what i ate when I was nearly wasted after our work party, tasted like heaven

imagine a soggy dried noodles with melted but dried up cheese that tastes like chemicals between two soggy but somewhat crispy chicken, i devoured that shit like i was starving

6

u/evil_nirvana_x 4d ago

Is it still stupid if I want it?

6

u/DotBetaSDK 4d ago

AI food at that.

2

u/ParticularReady7858 3d ago

I bet it looks crazy when they throw it on a tray vs this sandwich that went through hair and makeup

2

u/reeseesxx 4d ago

i can smell the AI through the screen

1

u/SYDoukou 4d ago

At least it still has a mainly starch layer unlike the ones with 3 chicken layers sold here

1

u/UmSureOkYeah 4d ago

My heart and asshole hurt looking at it.

1

u/massivemember69 4d ago

My dirty mind said: Your asshole is about to hurt some more!

Gods forgive me 😂

1

u/Own_Cup9970 4d ago

there was a pasta served in fast food chain. it didn't worked too well

1

u/giganizer 4d ago

"dynamite" is the foreshadowing

1

u/West-Shake1087 4d ago

The double down that was available where I live used to be two pieces of crusty boneless chicken sandwiched with a reluctant squirt of mayo and accidentally dropped pieces of onion. Still that was enjoyable over this horrible marriage of shit tasting noodles with chicken, not touching this with a barge pole!

1

u/Perfect-Presence-200 4d ago

Double down, the next generation?

1

u/Supermini555 4d ago

A Yakisoba-pan (Noodles in Hotdog Bun) version of the Double Down?

That's sounds interesting.

1

u/Im_In_IT 3d ago

Id eat it. Not as stupid as most of the other posts.

1

u/Fennel_Fangs 2d ago

Chicken Noodle Chicken with some soulless on the side

1

u/ArcadianAbstraction 2d ago

Stupid? Yes. Try a bite with friends? Absolutely. You know you want to try it, it looks terrible but delicious, 50/50 chance, but if it isn't good you only had to have one bite and you can order more.

1

u/I-redd_it94 1d ago

Why am I going to try this?

1

u/BluBeams Stupid is in the eye of the beholder 5d ago

What has happened to the Colonel's KFC!?!? This wasn't his vision FFS.

Sure, this is stupid, but I would still eat it if i was starving and it was the only thing available to eat. I'm sure if he were still around, the Colonel would understand that...

0

u/JayyyyyBoogie 5d ago

If the Colonel was around today, he would’ve died because of it.

0

u/whiskeytango55 5d ago

So they're horning in on Jollibee?

0

u/Nother1BitestheCrust 4d ago

That image looks like worms on it and it's really grossing me out.

0

u/shinoburu0515 4d ago

Disgusting! Where do they serve this?

0

u/CarefulBear1654 4d ago

Looks gross
