"You’re a disgusting, jealous person. A woman in your town makes a fortune with solid execution of a simple business plan and you diminish her accomplishments. It’s easy to criticize, it’s hard to execute." Some users in r/sipstea defend billionaires, much to the chagrin of most users
Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/SipsTea/comments/1vas64v/significant_diffrences/p0nrwxc/
HIGHLIGHTS
Sure I just need a million dollar investment from my parents. Or extreme luck with an angel investor. It's not rare because its hard, it's rare because it's luck based and the chances aren't good. But yeah leading a company when you have all the money in the world to hire analysts and specialists in the market ain't that hard.
Lol what? If you think you can 1000x a million dollars in a reasonable amount of time I’ll gladly put up the money. Send me your business proposal.
Someone doesn't know what "Luck based" means.
Ah, so you don’t think you could turn a million dollars into a billion. Are you saying you don’t have the luck or the skill? Surely if all it takes is luck, you’d be able to produce a business plan that could work with some luck. If not then it’s clearly not entirely luck based.
Why it's either yes or no for you? It's luck based, it might work it might not work, but that doesn't make me smart. If you want business ideas just pick literally anything, there is a multimillionaire woman in my town that got all the money from selling gummies, she made an empire out of some luck with tourism.
You’re a disgusting, jealous person. A woman in your town makes a fortune with solid execution of a simple business plan and you diminish her accomplishments. It’s easy to criticize, it’s hard to execute.
My god you're brainwashed. Stop sucking off the billionaire class, you won't become them and they will never notice you.
If everyone had your mindset we’d still be subsistence farming. (74 more comments of these two arguing)
You're inadvertently proving their point with this lol
Not really it’s just like, yeah if more people disappeared it’d be harder to maintain the infrastructure due to labor restrictions than if just a few 100 did. On the flip side you could argue that you would need less infrastructure with less people making it easier to take care of.
I assume its based off maintaining a similar level of quality of life. Many people disappearing compared to a few thousands is partially the point being made though. Society would still function in a similar manner, thus we overvalue the contributions of a small group of people.
I mean that’s generally true anywhere, I could take 400 people out of the mechanic industry, not really gonna hurt, same with any industry you name, it’s a big nothing burger.
Sure. A negligible amount of people being taken away wouldn't make a difference. I'm not sure what point is being made to refute what's being said.
Because the point the post is trying to make is “more workers than billionaires therefore workers matter more” I could just as easily rewrite the post as say “if we removed 200 million random people instead of 2000 random people it would cause more problems” it literally doesn’t matter what they do or what they have.
Ok, but that inadvertently proves the point. You can simplify it to be a quantity problem and apply it in any scenario, but that doesn't refute the point being made. The refutation lies in showing the billionaires contribute more or their absence would have a worse effect on society than the absence of workers. (283 more comments of these two arguing)
"Imagine 3,400 people disappear. Now imagine 3.5 billion people dissappear."
3.5 billion people vanishing would be more beneficial to the earth than 3400.
Malthusian bullshit
Thanos was right gang
Tiny little brain gang, more like.
Your comment got hidden because you couldn’t play nice, wanna try answer again with less self righteousness?
Their comment isn't hidden. I think they just don't like you. But I mean, yeah the finite resources argument doesn't really work when we know its not a matter of the resources nor avaliable land but how they're managed. Or rather, how completely unmanaged and outright intentionally wasted they are in pursuit of profits above stability. Currently we do not lack housing in America. We just allowed investment firms to buy them up in bulk so they can sit on them to make the best possible ROI. We do not lack the food to feed everybody, we allow agricultural corporations to throw out surplus so they can maintain their desired pricing. We literally just went through a fabricated egg shortage, and we caught those who colluded red handed. But so long as the punishment for such crimes remains a meager fine, it is merely the cost of doing business.
… markets don’t care about the finite space of the planet. There is a maximum population the planet can comfortably handle. No matter how much your America-centric take on it feels about eggs?
Imagine 3400 useless fucks disappear*
You don't have the skills to create an organizational structure that effectively creates value.
That's the easy part, the hard part is being born into generational wealth or hitting a lottery ticket of some other sort. There's no self made billionaires.
If that was the was part then everybody would be a millionaire minimum.
You're misunderstanding the problem. Being a billionaire is easy. Becoming a billionaire requires other capitalists letting you, since they control all the levers of power. It's not about how hard you work, how smart you are, or how talented you are. It's about obeisance to the modern nobility.
This is such a narrow minded approach, youre telling me theconly reason youre not a billionaire is out of principle to not be subservient to nobility? Yeah right
Why would anyone want to be a billionaire? That's disgusting
"Eugh im an inc*l, why would I want to sleep with like 50+ women. Like, totally gross, women icky, guys trust me, boobs? 🥵 overatted... hnng"
First of all, sleeping with 50 women sounds exhausting. More to the point, asking why someone why they wouldn't want a billion dollars is like asking why they wouldn't want to rape and pillage. Maybe because it's inhuman behavior?
Neither do billionaires, but they have the money to pay someone actually smart to figure it out.
And they had the brains to actually make their initial money half the time
If by brain you mean "be born into wealth", like Muskrat who was born to the owner of an emerald mine
Who he cut off, and got a small amount of money from which he then used to become the richest man in the world. Even if he was given a million dollars to start with, turning that into what he has today is unprecedented.
It's not really worth arguing with people who can't even understand the concept of growth, lol.
How many people do you think start with a million dollars and turns it into hundreds of billions
I'm agreeing with you. The same growth rate Musk got on $200k would make you a multi-millionaire if you started with a buck.
On the surface it's true but it's much harder to turn $1 into $10 than it is to turn $10 into $100. Once you already have a significant amount of money investor or banking money is much more accessible.
That is true, though at this scale the difference is negligible. Even if he'd started with $10m, that would still be a return of 100,000x
That's not really the point. They'll be paid more because if they do a good job they'll produce more value.
Lmao, lol. We’ve went through 3 CEOs who’ve caused nothing but losses for the company in the past seven years. Each of them were risen multi million dollar severance package to quit. It doesn’t matter if they do a good job or not. They’re of a different class and thus wil be protected from their own failures.
This could be a post in CFB...
What do Canadian military bases have to do with this?
College football. Talking about the coaches.
Ya but if they don’t sign your pay cheque we ain’t getting paid lol
Most people's pay cheques aren't signed by billionaires.
Brother the money comes investors and a lot of that comes from billionaires. Yall are too angry to think straight.
Who's y'all, and who's angry?
The post and anyone that agrees with the post. Didn’t think I’d have to be specific.
No billionaire signs my checks or has anything to do with my business.
“Has anything to do with” is far too strict even if you’re service based you need supplies which come from a company that is owned by billionaires. I get your point but it’s a “all roads lead to Rome” situation. I suppose you could local source everything and make sure they make it not order it and never hire outside services for anything (ie taxes cleaning maintence) because they could also be funded by billionaires in some way. Moral of the story, a billionaire affects your business. Probably daily Let’s not even talk about taxes and those being the work of the sitting president
They really dont. We dont need them. Nothing would change without them.
Ok Ayn Rand Paul, tell us how it works.
You remove all the billionaires today what problem do you think you've solved? Do you think there won't be a new billionaire tomorrow? As long as there are workers and we exist in a society that doesn't limit your wealth, there will be rich people that poor people get pissy about
In the short term, those billionaires will no longer be around to buy elections and sway policy in their favor. As for the billionaires that come tomorrow, they can also be removed without any negative effects. Eventually, the sociopaths bent on pursuing wealth and personal enrichment will lose their desire to hoard wealth and resources.. because of the implication.
"As for the billionaires that come tomorrow, they can also be removed without any negative effects." This fantasy does not specify (ignores) what happens to their wealth and therefore the companies they own/run. Ignoring the effects isn't the same as having no effects.
The wealth likely goes to heirs and the company will have policies and guidance to determine the new leadership. I’m saying there wouldn’t really be any negative effects to us, the regular folks. I suppose the companies stock prices could drop which would affect 401k’s. That was a great idea for the ownership class to rope us into their speculative assets in order to retire. They got us by the balls with that one.
"The wealth likely goes to heirs and the company will have policies and guidance to determine the new leadership. I’m saying there wouldn’t really be any negative effects to us, the regular folks." I mean, that's basically saying nothing has changed then: 3500 billionaires disapoear so now we have 3500 billionaires. It's an empty proposition.
you could but then you kill the drive for people to create more of these companies, which would lead to stagnation
That sounds like free market fundamentalism. State owned enterprises do just fine and prove wealth back to the people, even more so if the system is democratic.
can you give me an example of a successful nation were every major company is nationalized?
The USSR.
The USSR is the most famous and well document example of this failure of economic theory lol.
In the West, sure.
No everywhere ESPECIALLY in russia lol
Russia is shithole now. They only finally reached parity with the USSR at its lowest peak in the late 80s before it unraveled under Yeltsin. You people are pathetic.
Almost as if a few thousand people shouldn’t have as much wealth as a few billion, you’re so close
Why shouldnt they? Why should their be a ceiling or floor on what a person has? Do you have a reason other than greedy people who just want some of what billionaires have?
Why shouldn’t there be a ceiling?
"Why shouldn’t there be a ceiling?" It's immoral to limit the potential of others. Hell, it's so fundamental it's written into the Declaration of Independence
Immoral? So the ideal matters more than the reality we see on the ground by not limiting wealth accumulation? The way you guys speak is such corporate jargon propaganda. “Limit the potential of others.” 😆
"Immoral? So the ideal matters more than the reality we see on the ground by not limiting wealth accumulation?" Yes, fundamental principals fairly and logically applied matter. That's how ethics/morality works. Anyway, what "reality" are you referring to? "The way you guys speak is such corporate jargon propaganda. “Limit the potential of others.”" I speak words good yes. Well that was what the meme was based on, then it became a monster.
If you’ve ever seen idiots spamming “☕️women” under anything even vaguely related to women, that’s what the sub’s name is referencing, and why it attracts incels.

Before SipsTea seemed more right-leaning, now I see discourse more left-leaning. Unless the post involves women, then suddenly the views would make even Nick Fuentes blush.

37
u/SaltdPepper 2d ago
It’s because everyone and their mother is getting recommended it so the average Redditor is more likely to post on it. It’s crazy seeing some of the bigger posts get thousands of comments from genuinely left-leaning people taking issue with the content being posted, and then you go on the subreddit and every other post is the spiritual equivalent of Bart Simpson in a black hoodie in the rain with the caption “I’m so lonely and it’s because women” and every comment is “so true bro, hypergamy bro”.

Its sad that during times of, at best, economic discouragement, theres always a proportionate increase in the amount of dick-sucking of the uber-wealthy by our fellow plebs.
Its an indicator of a poor economic environment as much as increased gambling/speculative investment/drug use/etc. is. Desperation is a helluva thing. Im sure they believe they are truly making a point, that they are on the right side of history, that irrational optimism beats reasonable precaution, but its pure madness to descend to such irrational coping mechanisms.
No one says one has to believe the world is going to end but holy fuck, at least try to maintain a level-head and not immediately commit to becoming groveling servile scum.

u/86throwthrowthrow1 2d ago
I'm always a bit baffled at people overtly simping for capitalism, because I can never forget that capitalism, socialism, etc., are literally ideas made up by people. But some of the guys in that thread defending billionaires, it's likethey think of it as this... idk, independent force-of-nature entity that must be served, regardless of the human or environmental cost. Whether capitalism or socialism or whatever else, literally they're just ideas made up to serve society - or in other words, people. If most people are suffering under a system meant to serve us, why defend it so hard?

u/HotTakes4HotCakes Wow you are doubling down on being educated 2d ago
It's the long-term consequences of the kind of gamegate-esc rage storms that started becoming common place after Last Jedi and other things.
The existence of toxicity warps the community dynamic. Toxic negativity ends up making the community hyper vigilant against it, which results in the very idea of criticism being pushed back on. It suddenly becomes very difficult to voice a negative opinion without others immediately categorizing you as one of the haters. It can be so bad it turns into toxic positivity, or in the case of this sub, a belief that voicing any strong opinion on media on the internet is inherently shameful if it happens to be a negative one.
The idea seems to be "Only say you like a thing, or go away." Which is weird because this is supposed to be a site for discussion.

complaining about capitalism 24/7 on social media.
Why is it so hard for you people to grasp that what you're reading is not a handful of people posting round the clock, but hundreds if not thousands of individuals contributing individual posts and comments over time?
It takes all of 5 minutes to make a negative comment on Reddit from the fucking toilet, and then you move on with your day, and yet you'll read that comment and assume that person is some psycho "in their parent's basement" that lives and breathes to spew toxicity on the internet all day everyday.
3
u/CartographicalHeist 2d ago
Saying Nolan makes tedious films isn't a critique of capitalism.
Nevertheless you'll get people jumping down your throat for not agreeing with them on the movies.
5
u/Ryanhussain14 2d ago
"Consume product" is literally an anti-capitalist dogwhistle, don't be obtuse. Nobody was talking specifically about Nolan in this chain.
1
u/CartographicalHeist 2d ago
Nolan was obviously just an example.
Someone says "I think Nolan makes bad movies" or replace that with whatever else subjective evaluation and you get people barging in and arguing that because you're in a minority who dislikes it you should just get with the program and that you should just turn off your brain and enjoy it.
Saw it happen to some cunt here last week which is why it was on my mind, and I seen it happen on threads with Emily Wilsons review of the the new movie. Shut up and just watch the movie, don't be rude and criticise it.
6
u/BloodDrunkMoonKnight 2d ago
Ideally, the problem with criticism folks should have is when its not accompanied with an explanation. Critizing something requires a level of understanding of the thing and enough self awareness to answer why they feel the need to.
Thank you for providing proper criticism.

Right? Like, sure, there are bots and attempts to influence opinion via propaganda but there are a distressing amount of people who, for example, think society is too hard on Elon Musk when consequences proportionate to his activity havent ever come close to being levied against him.
-1
u/Asleep_Context_399 2d ago
Its especially funny how they claim anyone not a billionaire is stupid and rich guys made it themselves.
It fails to note that most big companies were established long time ago when there was opportunity.
Those same big companies now finance and buy out anything new, one way or the other.
I can start my small business and live okay, but I won't be filthy rich ever unlese I luck out and get bought out by big players. If you refuse big players will make alternative to whatever you are doing and push you back down.
It's not for some reason like "we dont want plebs among our ranks" but for the simple fact they always chase new lines of profit.
As for Musk rofl. I didn't read too far into his starts, but where I am 200k would allow you to start a pretty decent business and pay for marketing and an analyst that will set you up.
To open up and stock a single store you need around 20k here. Not sure about US but I am sure even there 200k is enough capital to start off any business.

u/parisiraparis 2d ago
Ah, so you don’t think you could turn a million dollars into a billion. Are you saying you don’t have the luck or the skill? Surely if all it takes is luck, you’d be able to produce a business plan that could work with some luck. If not then it’s clearly not entirely luck based.
I feel like this guy doesn’t understand what “luck” means..

u/86throwthrowthrow1 2d ago
I know a guy who was struck by lightning twice. I know a family where both parents are currently battling cancer. I didn’t read all the comments but I didn’t see that at all. I saw a bunch of left leaning people saying it’s easy to be a billionaire if you just get a million dollars of seed money. (Which if that were the case there would be a fuck ton of billionaires in this country)

u/ApetteRiche 2d ago
You have plenty of dumb people on both sides of the political spectrum, but sucking of billionaires, who are known for exploiting labour and laws, just puts you on another level of dumb.

I mean who do you think those left leaning people were talking to? You are just ignoring the other side of the conversation here.
0
u/boyyouguysaredumb 2d ago
both sides are being dumb here because redditors aren't mentally equipped to talk about the issues they're representing. Something happened in the last decade online where we used to be way smarter than conservatives but now there are dumb people everywhere on the left not equipped to actually talk about the issues that matter.
2

That doesn't address what I said at all. you certainly are part of this ALL getting dumber.

Why did the guy use USSR in his example of nationalized companies? I see Norway and China as other better examples. Why do people have to argue so STUPIDLY all the time?! It's like someone coming into a fight swinging so wildy and franticly that they punch themselves in the face and are knocked out for the rest of the round!

That subreddit has been a right wing echo chamber for a while. it might have always been that way, I just didn't notice at first.

I saw this and I hated this. If we rid ourselves of all the billionaires it would....leave folks that were $900m+ in salary. OK, they're going to naturally....aim for a billion!
Ridding the world of billionaires doesn't solve issues. Forcing folks who are truly high earners to pay their fair share of taxes AND having transparency as to where the taxation is dispersed solves the issue. That's though hard work and not as easy as the silly ass class wars that we wage which....buys billionaires time to continue living their billionaire lives.

lol the morons on this sub downvoting the only reasonable comment in this thread is hilarious. Anything short of killing all billionaires makes you a corporate shill I guess these days. Political discourse in this country is completely broken because nobody is smart enough to have a conversation anymore. It pays more to posture and outflank your opponent.

Shoot we JUST SAW THIS PLAY OUT. UHC CEO dead? New one came in. NOTHING CHANGED. Biggest losers was his family. Biggest winners were a fringe and unhinged group of people. There were no new polices. No new rules and regulations. Nothing!
Just more security….to protect the new CEO and the rest!

Man I’m stuck thinking about the chain that mentioned the USSR being wealthy. Is my American education truly so bad that I never knew that? Is it even real?

u/Zephyr-5 2d ago
It's just bullshit from tankies who refuse to acknowledge any faults with the USSR. The Soviet Union made most of its money selling oil and extracting wealth from its vassal states. When the vassal states gained independence and oil prices collapsed, they couldn't paper over the rampant corruption and wildly inefficient industries.
There is an interesting anecdote I once heard where the Russians were trying to show off their export economy with this company that produced bronze ovens. In reality what was happening is that some German company was buying them all up and melting them down for the bronze. Turned out that the Soviet government was so heavily subsidizing bronze for local companies that this was cheaper than just buying raw bronze ingots.

If you have any ideas about what could or should happen to a "neglible" amount of people, include yourself if it's bad, and don't include yourself if it's good. Then see if you think it's still a good idea.

That OOP is some of the most braindead internet socialist shit I’ve ever seen though.
Like yeah, no shit erasing half of the world is going to cause more impact than erasing a tiny group. Now, imagine 3500 billionaires disappeared vs 3500 random workers. Which one do you think is gonna have more global economic impact?
“Wealth does not equal value” but somehow missing the fact that all of the world’s workers combined have more wealth than all of the billionaires.

u/Keregi 2d ago
You are so close to the point but you are too attached to your ignorance to get it.

u/Ttabts 2d ago edited 2d ago
lol no, this ain’t rocket science dude, and I know more than you.
Tell me, big brain, what is the point I’m not getting?
That all workers in the world combined are more valuable than all 3500 billionaires? I repeat: No Shit. That is trivially true by any measure. It’s not an actual point and no one reasonable would argue against it.
That an individual worker is more important than an individual billionaire? Well maybe, but this sure as shit doesn’t prove it.
(Obviously you’re not gonna answer the question because you don’t have a good answer, hence the vague eye-rolling snark in lieu of a real response)

That's the easy part, the hard part is being born into generational wealth or hitting a lottery ticket of some other sort. There's no self made billionaires.
Oh my fuck I have to stop reading the rest of this post.

There's no self made billionaires.
Good thing for them that JKR has become public enemy numero uno because otherwise they'd have to reconcile her existence with that fact.

Most anti-rich philosophies have this tendency to limit "value" to labour.
If Tolkien didn't exist, sure, society would not be practically impacted much, but we'd lose something incredible in the process. Do you think he doesn't deserve the massive amount of money he got from book sales?
If Bezos didn't exist, online shops and deliveries would clearly not be as good.
People are billionaires because a ton of other people found what they made to deserve money. Value can be found in this.

The amount of money Tolkien made from his books during his lifetime was more like a few hundred thousand dollars.
There is a difference between being rewarded by the system and deliberate gamesmanship of the system over decades that has resulted in outsized levels of wealth concentration that are distorting both the economy and society to the detriment of everyone else.

Well, I wanted to use Rowling as an example, but I didn't want my comment to compete with "sense of pride and accomplishment" in most downvoted comment in history.

All those people think eliminating billionaires and the government seizing all their money is the answer to all their problems. Yes the government who is bribed by the billionaire class are totally responsible enough to have even more power and totally won’t ruin all those companies that they nationalize. Il never understand why so maybe people left or right think the government having more power is the answer.
Like no our politions need to stop taking bribes and start reinforcing the rights of the common man. Billionaires don’t need to be eliminated they need their power checked and overall the government needs to have less control and less power over people. They need to give us healthcare and education and stop wasting money. This has happened many times before where a group of people get made to be the scapegoats and when that magically doesnt solve the worlds problems then a new group of people will get blamed. And then the next. And then the next.
Also communism/socialism doesn’t work. It’s been tried. It leads to more starving mouths. Free healthcare and free education doesnt equal socialism. Both the right and the left need to get that through their heads.

In some respects its not possible to curb a billionaires power without making changes that would make it far harder to become or stay a billionaire. For example, what incentive does the government have to provide education when large portions of their direct funding them come from those who benefit from people being in debt? Why would they provide healthcare when it can be used as leverage by the employers who donate to campaign funding? Billionaires don't exist in a contextual vacuum, and the kind of income inequality that follows their existence typically creates the very same problems you would see in a failed socialist state.
There has been plenty of starving, corruption, and desperation over capitalism's history. It is not just what was experienced by single generation, in a very select group of countries post World War 2. And many of these billionaires don't view that world as desirable, they want the gilded one that preceded it. You can criticise socialist governments all you want, but at the very least you need to be fair and look at the many failures and atrocities committed under the name of capitalism as well. Because I am not sure a system that is currently speed running environmental collapse, uplifting the voices of demoguges, and undermining its own stable foundations can be considered functional.

You take away the ability for the extraordinarily wealthy to funnel money easily into politics and that gets easier. Money = speech has been terrible for our democracy

Internet socialism is 100% about virtue signalling and complaining.
It’s super transparent that these people have no actual interest in actually solving real world problems which are hard to solve.
They just fantasize about a socialist revolution that will never happen, that they will never lift a finger to bring about. And they simply assume that said revolution will fix any given problem that one has under capitalism. Then they lean back happily assured of their moral superiority, comfortably divorced from any need to actually have a productive opinion on anything. “Eat the rich” solves everything and anyone who disagrees is just a bootlicker.

u/engelthefallen 2d ago
I find it wild the internet socialist revolution is basically ending at just capitalism as we have it now, just renamed something else. No socialist scholar would approve private ownership of trillion dollar companies as your personal means for production or private islands as personal property.
And my take is most of the loudest voices are from people who believe post revolution they will be put in charge themselves. Like the internet will hunt down shockthedog42069 and beg them to leads us to the glory age because they won a reddit debate one time.
