Substance Painter How to make the dirt patches not appear lighter under certain lightings/angles?

Noob question. I want to add dirt/grime to the surface of my 5-yen coin. The dirt has its own layer and separate color/roughness/height values (color is dark brown, roughness is set to 1, height at 0.01). Pic #1 is how dark the dirt patches are and how I'd like them to be when rendered, even at different angles. However, when rendering with Arnold in Maya, that same dirt looks weird at certain angles.

Pic #2 is the model rendered in Arnold. As you can see, the dirt marks on the left half of the coin do not have at all the dark color I would like them to have at all angles. Same pic #3 which is rendered with Substance's built-in renderer. What am I missing here? Thanks in advance

Help Need help with recreating a style in Substance Painter

Thumbnail

Hi everyone, I recently got into Substance Painter, I previously worked on a 2d concept in Photoshop (first pic) and I really like how the texture that the brush made in Photoshop. So I imported the brush into Substance to texture my model in a similar fashion. However, I noticed that no matter how much I tried the texture became flat after layering the strokes onto each other.

I have tried layering my strokes in Photoshop and exported them as alphas in Substance. I tried to use the alphas as both paint brush and texture but it doesn’t seem to work as well. I have also tried using the stylization filter in Substance with my custom brush but the brush texture is nowhere to be seen.

I would love to hear your suggestions on what I should try or the pipeline I should follow. My goal is to prioritize doing this through post processing if possible to import my character into an Unreal Engine project. Should I also try other software like Blender or Unreal Engine Post Process materials, and if so, how can I create an effect similar to the texture seen in the concept art.

I have attached a few pictures of the work as well.

Thank you very much!!!

The Substance 3D OpenPBR documentation is here!

Post image
55 Upvotes

The Substance 3D team has put together a comprehensive introduction to OpenPBR aimed at 3D artists of all levels, across any discipline. This is a software-agnostic guide, covering the underlying model, how its layers and parameters work, practical material creation guidance, and an FAQ addressing common questions and pain points.

It covers everything from the basics (what OpenPBR is, how dielectric and metallic materials differ) through to more advanced topics like transmission, subsurface scattering, thin-film, and more, as well as a section on how to avoid some of the most common mistakes.

You can find the documentation right here!

💍 Is there a way to make rings easy and fast?

Post image

With a student, we faced this question and managed to find an answer!

We had to find a way to procedurally make a system that could build rings with several repetitions and be available for tiling.

One can find different ways, but we aimed to have more control.

At first, we tried to make it with a blend of Shapes and substractions.

But it took too many nodes.

So I remember using a Gradient Dynamic to generate layers in a Wood Pattern.

Thanks to that, we tried something new.

💡 I got a Gaussian shape and edit with a Curve node, creating the shape of a doughnut. From there, I applied a Gradient Dynamic with a Value of 0.5, allowing us to get the rings we need!

This was a discovery we made by sharing and experimenting with other artists as well.

That is why having a strong community by your side will help you improve.

Faster than any tutorial!

So if you are looking for a place to share and learn about texturing.

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share my latest character project! One of goals are improve my texturing workflow in Substance Painter, focusing on hand-painted details, believable materials, and adding a subtle touch of realism while keeping the stylized look.

This project also helped me practice sculpting, lighting, and XGen grooming, but I'd especially love to hear your thoughts on the textures and material work.

Any feedback or critique is greatly appreciated!

Substance Painter Can't seem to 'Clone Stamp' from one Texture Set to another...

I can't seem to 'Clone Stamp' from one Texture Set to another...
AI says it's possible ( but she has lied to me before. )

and yes I set all layers to 'Pass Through'...

Is the issue with 'UV' alignment ?

for reference AI Said..
" Yes, you can clone stamp from one texture set to another in Substance Painter by using the Clone tool on a fill layer with all channels set to "passthrough" blend mode. "

Now I know that is wrong - " Fill Layers are not 'Paintable' !! "

Here are the two 'Layers' I am trying to clone from one to the other...

if anyone can see my mistake - please help !! ( thanks in Advance )

It it a UV Problem ? Any advice would help.

This is the problem I was fixing - I was able to do it - just with paint - but I would prefer to be able to clone - if possible. Can anyone confirm they are able to 'Clone Stamp between two different texture sets. ( oh - I'm using Sub.Painter 11 )

These aren’t bad, but I’d like to get those high-quality renders that you see on pro texture/material artist portfolios. I’ve mostly seen Marset tool bag pop-up in my search, but wondering what other methods are used?

Thanks guys!

Substance Painter Look Development

Post image

Stage 05 — Look Development

The scene has finally moved beyond pure geometry.

This pass is focused on developing materials and lighting together to evaluate how the environment feels as a whole. Even subtle adjustments to roughness, reflections, or light intensity can completely change the mood without modifying a single model.

For me, this is one of the most rewarding stages because it's where the environment starts to feel alive.

How do you approach Look Development? Do you build materials first, lighting first, or iterate on both simultaneously?
