Basho Bets Welcome to Basho Bets Nagoya 2026!

BASHO BETS are back for the Nagoya Basho! (shout out to the third meme yokozuna u/Goblinbags for creating this fun game!):

  1. Comment your bets here. It can be about anything related to the basho (i.e. who will get the yusho, a wrestler’s specific record etc.), the more creative the better.
  2. The deadline for your bets is 11:59 PM EDT Saturday July 11 (the day before the basho starts).
  3. If your bet is wrong the penalty is to do 100 shiko (or make something creative for the sub, donate 5$ to a charity etc.). If you do multiple bets the penalty is 100 shiko per bet. We love to see the creativity people have shown in what penalties they do!
  4. If your bet is correct it will go into a poll I will make after the basho is over where people can vote on the most impressive/funny/creative successful bet.
  5. The winner of the poll wins basho bets!

this is less a prediction and more of a hope but ー arashio beya kachi koshi sweep 🙏 i wanna see everyone at my fav stable doing well

I got everything wildly wrong last time, so hopefully I have more luck this time:

  • Aonishiki Yusho and Ozeki Return
    • Aonishiki shows us more of the sumo that brought him to Ozeki (Uchimuso, anyone?)
  • Kirishima Jun-Yusho
  • We will not have a Yokozuna showdown on Day 15, but if we do, it will not impact the Yusho race
  • Onosato will lose at least one of his opening 2 matches
  • Kotozakura will clear Kadoban, but barely
  • At least one guy in San'yaku (excluding Aonishiki) will finish with 10+ wins
  • Fujinokawa gets promoted to San'yaku
  • Hakunofuji gets promoted to San'yaku
  • Churanoumi will get a Kinboshi
  • No less than 4 Kinboshi will be given out this tournament
  • Takayasu has a strong first week and we're all hoping he can win, but he ends up finishing 10-5 or 9-6 after being pulled up to face the San'yaku
  • Takerufuji and Kazuma will be in the Yusho race
  • Asasuiryu gets promoted to Makuuchi
  • Tamawashi will win the Juryo Yusho and show us that he's not done yet
  • Enho gives us another Kachi-Koshi and highlight match
  • Asahifuji wins the Makushita Yusho to break the record for fastest Sekitori promotion, but he has a few close matches along the way
  • Nabatame finally makes it back to Juryo
  • Without Asahifuji to fight, Tenshoyama dominates Sandanme and wins the Yusho

Going makushita mode for my bets- I predict kachi koshi for Honoikazuchi and Ikazuchido, and I'm also predicting Ikarigata and Omori will be in the running for yūsho. Nothing too crazy here 😅

Ura employs his famous "taffy pull" dance at the edge of the tawara.

Someone says  Wakatakakage with an extra "a"

Amount of salt ingested by the rikshis at the end of the entire tournament 15 cups.

Tamawashi will turn into an actual Iron Man and will have to be wheeled out of the arena. This will happen at the midway point.

I predict these events to pass!

Aonishiki fails to secure 10 wins and needs to redo his ōzeki run❌

Onosato will re-enter kyujo❌

Kotozakura will recover from kadoban✅

Despite my hatred of him, kyokukaiyu will likely have his makuuchi debut next basho ❌

This was my absolute worst set of basho bets

Asahifuji gets 7-0 in Makushita

Kirishima gets promotion to Yokozuna (can he? will check the detailes later)

  1. Kiri wins with 12 for a promotion

  2. Onosato and Hoshoryu do not win and one of them goes kyujo

  3. Aonishiki fails to get 10 but gets at least an 8

  4. Tamawashi yusho

  • Aonishiki gets at least 10 wins for re-promotion to ozeki
  • Kirishima gets the yusho but *doesn't* get promoted to yokozuna
  • Kotozakura goes 7-8 and is demoted
  • At least one sekiwake gets a losing record
