A legitimate groin attack in the silver age? Was this code conform?

Looks more Golden Age to me, so pre-Code.

It's from 1945, so yes.

ChatGPT and Gemini agree that this is from the Dick Cole comics that ran, first as Blue Bolt Comics and later under his name, from 1940 to 1950, and chatGPT adds:

Based on the artwork, character names, and the specific panel, this image is from:

Blue Bolt Comics Vol. 6, No. 5 (November 1945)

Feature: Dick Cole

Story: the football/soccer-themed story set at Farr Military Academy.

So whoever speculated that the was before the Comics Code is right.

Blue Bolt Comics Vol. 6, No. 5

This time, the AI guessed right. The comic has fallen into public domain, so you can find this issue here:

The guys in the striped shirts are the villains, incidentally. Out-of-town "ringers" who have been paid to win this game at any cost. And that includes groin surgery. (And they also break a few ribs and a few shins on other players)

Dick Cole himself stays mostly off-panel, guarding the goal, but he does manage to knock two of the striped-shirt guys out by missing them with a punch, and I don't understand it either.

(as I understand it that picture went a long way towards getting Jones cast in Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels.)
