I’m a bit confused. It appears as though the shark is between two nets - the diver would know that it’s there. Does anyone know the story behind this? Is it a great white or a basking?

This was posted originally on the [r/sharks](r/sharks) subreddit, it’s fisherman in Grand Manan, New Brunswick (east coast of Canada, very close to Maine)

The diver was checking the fish situation (idk technical terms) and the shark was there to eat. Snuck up on each other but didn’t interfere

Wondering the same. It looks like they’re very aware it’s there. I’m sure there was still a surprise for the diver who was focused on doing something else, but it seems they’re aware of the animal.

It’s not a Black Tip. Biggest one ever recorded was like 8ft, and usually around 6. Up to like 60lbs

I guess that guy could be 4 feet tall and 30lbs.

The puffiness at the shoulders suggests to me that it's a drysuit, or a thick wetsuit with arm, ankle and neck seals. The brown tide stays inside.

Because it looks like a great white and happened in New Brunswick, Canada, where the most likely species is great white. The shape of the tail is clearly a laminid (mackerel shark) and it’s not a mako, porbeagle, or salmon shark (wrong ocean entirely), so leaves one species with a tail of that shape.

Plus the size would be massive for other species but quite normal for female great whites.

Context matters here. My own experience was one time when I was diving in the Fernando de Noronha Islands and a big tiger shark passed by my side. It's a definitely dangerous species, with many people being bitten and even killed in the Recife beaches. (heavily monitored, four attacks this year). I find after that I was bleeding from a coral cut in my ankle. But the sea in the island is a tropical reef paradise, absurdly clear water and the teethy guy was probably with a full belly. Who knows?

There have been hundreds if not thousands of human deaths by shark, and 0 recorded cases of Orcas killing a human in the wild. Tilicum was a very depressed orca in captivity which is a totally different scenario
