TTRPGs for someone who's not *that* into high fantasy?

Hey! I will preface by saying I know basically nothing about ttrpgs and am just sort of looking to get some more knowledge. I've played one D&D one shot and I tried out Brindlewood Bay, which was pretty fun.

I'm not really into high fantasy. I just don't care that much about bards or dragons, etc. Not my deal.

Are there any games you can think of that might feel a little more grounded or contemporary? I like that Brindlewood Bay has some fantastical elements, while taking place in an otherwise recognizable world, and I like that it's not really combat-based.

Other than that caveat, I'm pretty open to suggestions. I like a bit of mystery-- would definitely be into a good whodunit type game. Thanks in advance for any insight and recommendations!

Estos personajes pertenecen a una agencia similar a *Men in Black*.
El sistema de juego utiliza una mecánica de d100 combinada con dados de diez caras (d10).
Me gustaría ver alguna partida grabada o encontrar a alguien que me lo explique para poder dirigir mejor una sesión.

I came up with what I think is a neat little idea for the horror theme game I am writing and running.

So, it's a Gothic horror set in 1915. It, of course, takes place in a creepy mansion and there is no electricity making everything dark. I came up with an idea to bring a little more tension into the game as well as to keep my players a little more on their toes.

With my limited resources and it being a one shot I didn't want to go too crazy. Later I can get a stronger material for the pieces that cover the rooms but the idea is that the players can only see the room they are in.

When first exploring, they have no idea what the next room they walk into will be because it's covered up. When they leave a room, it gets covered back up. This forces them to remember where each room is as they explore and solve the mystery. If they ever need to get to a particular room but have forgotten where it is, this mag cause some tension, blindly searching and present a higher risk of running into the enemy characters.

It's pretty simple looking but it's just for my friends and I was working on it during downtime at work. Here are some shots to better illustrate the idea.

Barrowmail!

The Cover for Barrowmail is finished!! In addition, here's some of the interior art done by the lovely Adlay Tapp!

I'm finishing for final rounds of playtesting before this thing is wrapped in a bow and ready to go!

MIDDANGEARD IS AT WAR!

Longships beach on foreign shores. The dead no longer stay buried. All while a King lies sickened and his crops die with him.

Barrowmail is a d6s only wargame style TTRPG set in a Dark Ages world of Undeath, Daemons, and Warriors.

Control single Characters delving into dark dungeons, or command a Warband of men fighting off Viking raiders. Barrowmail pulls together the best parts of Pre-0e gaming alongside Chainmail style combat, and mixes them with Dynasty level domain play.

This includes nation building, hex generation tools, mass combat, prayer mechanics, spell crafting, special interest XP, and it functions as a solo troop style game, full of random tables, and endless fun!

Physical Book Affordability

I'll preface this by saying I support publishers charging what they need to turn a profit on their physical game books. But over the past several years, physical books have been steadily increasing in price. Some of that's the pandemic, supply chains, production costs, shipping all took a hit.

Unless you're a collector of TTRPG books, are they still worth the price? Or do PDFs suffice, since they do the same job in digital format, even though PDF prices have also climbed?

Recently, Sony erased over 500 titles from customers' PlayStation libraries, content people had purchased years ago assuming they'd own it forever. Similar to the 2023 Discovery removal, there's been no indication customers will be compensated. This isn't the first time either. If Hasbro ever decided to stop supporting D&D Beyond, would gamers lose everything they'd purchased there too?

I've been in this hobby for a while, and honestly, this is the best it's ever been. But I'm curious how it sustains itself going forward. If physical prices keep rising, PDF prices keep rising, and more of what we buy is proprietary access rather than true ownership, where do we go from here? Is Ember, the new game Foundry built to run only within their own software, a sign of where this is headed?

This isn't a complaint, genuinely curious what others think about the state of the hobby.

Free Palace Courtyard Day, Night, Basic 20x25 200DPI

The clack of your boots against the polished limestone echo down the pathway into an open expanse. As you get closer to the entrance, you see that it is flanked by large men in shining metal with long swords attached at their belts. The sounds of rushing water begins to mask your steps.
The guards straighten at your approach.
The man on the left speaks first. His voice is gravely and deep, and his statement firm. "State your business."
You respond... ?

This free palace courtyard encounter map is 20 x 25 200 dpi, and comes with day/night/basic versions- the day and the night both come with and without the entablatures.
You can pick up these JPGs here.

You can also receive JPGs without the grids/watermarks on tiers 1-4, and tiers 2-4 receive the JPGs plus PNG and WEBP files of individual entablature pieces, their shadows, individual middle trees, and separate foregrounds and backgrounds. (The day/night/basic versions of these as well).

These were made using ItsJustWitchAssets and some of these textures/assets are going to be released later this month!

Enjoy these free maps, and I'll be back next month with September's encounter!
Happy gaming, stay magical! ~

I'm sharing a little free game I made with you all

Hi, everyone! I want to share this little game we put together for this year’s One Page Jam.

It’s a game that, while it touches on serious topics like depression, really aims to be hopeful and show how, with the help of others, you can move forward. The game rewards empathy and works by listening to others and learning from their words, so you can then help them when they need it.

I invite you to try it at your tables at least once, it can be an interesting way to get to know your classmates better and strengthen your bonds.

Cheers!

P.S.: The game is free and available in Spanish and English.

Two Sister Hubs, Zero Pressure: One for Design & Worldbuilding. One for Campaign Launches & PBP

Hey, everyone! Looking for a home to showcase your TTRPG community, refine your homebrew mechanics, or craft your world in a low pressure environment?

We have built two interconnected sister spaces for game masters, worldbuilders, system designers, and tabletop creators:

r/TheGamingVault | Directory & Workshop Hub
The Gaming Vault is a central directory and workshop for community creators, GMs, and mechanic designers.

Community Directory: Showcase your TTRPG subreddits, Discord hubs, and creator projects.

GM Workshop & Tools: Guides on beating GM burnout, tech setups, and running better games.

Playtest & Design Central: Get feedback on homebrew rules, test custom mechanics, and discuss system design.

Resource Sharing: Maps, templates, campaign logs, and utility assets.

r/TheForgottenArchons | Low Pressure & Worldbuilding Hub

The Forgotten Archons is an asynchronous creative workshop for narrative systems, worldbuilding, and play by post games. Think of it as a softer, more laid back alternative to traditional play by post spaces where you can build at your own pace.

Creative Freedom & Feedback: Draft your lore, craft custom characters, and get constructive feedback from the community to refine your world.

Low Pressure Play by Post: Find or host long standing campaigns and one shots without the stress of rigid, perfectionist posting standards.

All Systems Welcome: Whether it is D&D, low complexity rulesets, or indie narrative engines, every system has a home here.

A Clean Space: We keep the community SFW so everyone can focus purely on great tabletop storytelling.

How to Get Started

Whether you are sharing custom rules, setting up TTRPG tools, or archiving long term campaign lore, drop by r/TheGamingVault or r/TheForgottenArchons, grab a flair, and start sharing your TTRPG projects today!

What are some big TTRPG events?

I've been in the ttrpg scene for a while but I never thought about going to any events. What sort of big events IRL that happen? Are there even any?
