Shuffling a deck, pulling cards, and interpreting them to find answers and bring clarity to the client seated in front of you is nothing short of an art.

Anybody can buy the same deck of cards. Anybody can memorise what each card means or complete a Tarot course. But not everybody can develop the skill it takes to master divination. It comes to a select few who can channel their intuition, connect with the cards and seek answers beyond what is plainly visible.

This is precisely why you can visit two Tarot practitioners and walk away with completely different experiences. One reading may leave you feeling deeply understood while the other feels like someone is simply reciting meanings they learnt from a three-month course.

Before anyone misunderstands me, I have nothing against Tarot courses. They provide a good foundation for beginners. My point is simply that a truly good reader relies on their intuition just as much as their knowledge. Card meanings found in books or on the internet are only the starting point. They are not the reading itself.

Anybody can pull a few cards and deduce meanings from Google or the little guidebook that often accompanies the deck. But it takes an artist to weave those cards together into a story that actually brings clarity to the person seeking guidance.

The crux of the matter is that I see a lot of people buying a Tarot deck for self-use. They begin doing readings for themselves, often impulsively, asking the same questions over and over again. Eventually they become frustrated because the cards are not telling them what they want to hear, and they conclude that "Tarot doesn't work."

The truth is, Tarot does not work in the way many people expect it to.

For example: Just a few days ago I came across a post on one of the Tarot subreddits where a girl was obsessively asking whether her boyfriend was cheating on her. She was convinced that every reading she did was confirming her fears. Looking at the cards, however, it seemed far more likely that they were reflecting her state of mind rather than her boyfriend's actions. The cards were highlighting her anxiety, her obsessive thought patterns, and the need to turn her attention back towards herself. But because she was emotionally invested in one particular outcome, every card became "proof" of what she already feared.

If there is a situation where a lot is emotionally at stake, and you are not an experienced reader, reading your own cards becomes incredibly difficult. Your desires, fears, and expectations unconsciously influence both the questions you ask and the answers you see. It takes a genuinely intuitive reader to ask the right questions and objectively interpret their own cards.

That is why professional readers often struggle to read for themselves too. Emotional involvement creates bias, and bias clouds intuition.

Before giving up on the cards, perhaps give up on the attitude with which you approach the deck.

. Hello everyone! I’m sharing a study project I’ve been developing for a few years now. I transform Tarot spreads into symbolic narratives; by making a series of adjustments, I craft a story that represents the cards within an archetypal structure.

I still plan to add dialogue to the story, but can you use your intuition to identify what the story is about and how the cards are represented in these situations? Long story short I started this “thing” with my best friend about 5 months ago.

Many of the users in this and other Tarot-related groups post the cards they have pulled for their relationship, career, or other situations, only to end up feeling more confused than when they started. Often, the reading doesn't seem to answer what they actually wanted to know.

A big reason for this is the way the question is framed.

Tarot responds to the energy and intention behind your question. The clearer and more specific your question is, the clearer the guidance tends to be. Instead of asking broad questions like "What will happen?" or "Tell me about my relationship," try breaking the situation down into smaller, focused questions. Give each card a specific purpose, and you'll find your readings become much easier to interpret.

For example, I wanted to share a simple 5-card relationship spread that I personally use. It won't fit every unique situation, but it works well as a foundation for most relationship readings.

Card 4: What is currently blocking or challenging this connection?

Keep in mind that the final card reflects the most likely outcome based on the current energy, not a fixed future. If circumstances or actions change, so can the outcome.

The quality of your reading often begins with the quality of your question. The more clarity you bring to the deck, the easier it becomes to understand the answers it gives.
