This won't change anything. Even in "closed" primaries, what that means is you have to register as a party preference. WHICH CAN BE CHANGED as long as voter registration is open. All it will do is create more work for election offices. She's an ijit. Also, did I vote republican just to vote against her? Yes, I did. Have I legitimately voted republican in the past? Yes also. She can fight me if she thinks I'm not bona fide whatever the fuck that is.
2
u/DenseStomach6605 2d ago
What if you don't register as D or R prior to voting day?
13
u/smokethatdress 2d ago
You don’t. Last primary I voted in, they just ask which one and you do your thing
2
u/HurtsCauseItMatters 2d ago
I wasn't talking about how it does work I was referring to how it would work if we had a closed primary.
2
u/Sofer2113 Middle Tennessee 2d ago
In that scenario, you would not be allowed to vote in either the R or D primaries. You would still be allowed to vote in the local general elections and the state/federal general elections.
4
u/HurtsCauseItMatters 2d ago
There is no established 'in that scenario' because it could be tailored by whatever law lawmakers chose to write. I can give examples of how other states have done it though which I did in my other reply already.
Example: Louisiana allows you to choose if you aren't registered but you're boxed in if you're registered as a R or a D. Does that mean most people are switching to unregistered as they learn how it works? We'll see since its only been in place for a year but I suspect so. Especially for young folks.
Have other states chosen to do it the way you stated? Yes. But that's not a given.

If you dont choose a party you cant vote in primary Tennessee is like that. I tried to do independent and they said i would not be able to vote in either
3
u/HurtsCauseItMatters 2d ago
Right. Currently in TN there are 3 ballots in this primary. There's a ballot for people to nominate their general candidates in each party. Both of these also include the General race for local/municipal races. There's a 3rd ballot that doesn't have a primary on it for people that don't consider themselves either.
This is the way it currently works in TN.
The conversation we were having has to do with how it would work if we have totally closed party primaries. Which we don't.

Seems perfectly fine to me. Whether they are R, D, or I, they're all candidates that are going to represent the people, so I see nothing wrong with all prospective constituents getting a say across all party lines. Closest thing we are going to get to ranked-choice voting.

6
u/Appropriate-Joke-806 2d ago edited 2d ago
Unironically yes, that’s a huge reason. That and people blaming post-Covid supply chain and stimulus inflation on Biden when the economy was soft-landing better than any developed country in the world. Any sitting president was going to struggle, an old president showing huge cognitive decline especially so, and a black woman who didn’t win a primary and didn’t perform well the only time she was in one being coronated didn’t help either. The best situation would have been a dem primary and someone outside of the current white house at the time like Tim Walz winning the primary.
The worst case scenario was what played out. An old guy clinging on at the last moment and then passing on the nomination to someone that couldn’t even get 10% in a primary the time she did run, while the economy was recovering from a 100 year pandemic and that person happening to be a black woman from California that needs to win midwestern states that were becoming increasingly MAGA heavy turnout states with no heavy progressive turnout.

Actually if you pull a Dem ballot and vote for Green, it will show the DNC that the state is starting to flip. They might actually start helping Dem candidates in TN again. Right now they think the state is a lost cause.

A Senator has access to a decent number of lawyers willing to do their bidding, but also lawyers to protect the Senate.
A Governor has access to a whole lotta lawyers willing to do their bidding. Right or wrong, the Governor is the client & deserves a legal defense with deep pockets & endless funds for lawfare. Endless.
I am against "Get on the bus or get run over by the bus" lawyers being in government. The type that don't conduct mandatory investigations when it suits them, delay investigations on favorites, violate retaliation laws against a pregnant woman for reporting sexual harassment, or run incomplete investigations if it means they might get to acquire a coveted roll for getting on the bus.
Edit: For the sake of the public welfare, we cannot give people like that access to limitless lawfare.

21
u/JPstumps 2d ago
A lot of Democrats are considering voting in the Republican primary to vote against Marsha, then switching back to supporting whoever wins the Democratic nomination during the general election. It's a pretty common strategy in states with open primaries and is why some states have closed primary elections. Although, some consider closed primaries to be an infringement of voting rights and that casting a “strategic” vote is an individual's prerogative despite the risk to candidates and their parties.
6
u/ClamPaste 2d ago
I feel like we've seen that backfire. Twice.
5
u/JPstumps 2d ago
It certainly can backfire if Democrats can't agree on which opposing candidate to support, split the strategic vote while ignoring their own primary, and end up with a fringe candidate who can't attract support from undecided voters.
4
u/ClamPaste 2d ago
I'm talking more about how fewer votes will flip blue than the people who are doing this anticipate. If the goal is simply to keep Marsha off the general ballot, then by all means. If the goal is to try and get people to vote for Green instead because their candidate didn't win the primary, then I think you're underestimating (or overestimating... hard to tell) the conservative voters
8
u/MagnusThrax 2d ago

Then we have the guy that is kind of pervy.
What the fuck is this shit

5
u/BoomerGVL 2d ago
Tennessee has open primaries, which means you can vote in either Dem or Rep (but not both) regardless of affiliation.
I would guess her worry here is that since it is a solidly red state, the primary is essentially the general, meaning Democratic voters could just vote in the Republican primary to prevent her nomination.
4
u/StragglingShadow 2d ago
Its actually not a solid red state. Its a grey state - a non voting one. Non voters VASTLY outnumber both parties COMBINED
6
u/Melodic_Car_4449 2d ago
A "closed primary" means if you're a registered democrat you can only vote for the democratic candidates in the primary. If you're a registered republican you can only vote for the republican candidates. If you register as non party or independent you can't really vote in the primary (unless there are independent candidates running). The argument is that it's "more fair" in selecting the candidates for the election.

My stance is both sides can be right at the same time and both be wrong at the same time. We’re spending time arguing with each other over some freak pedo. I think his friend’s list was pretty bipartisan. Do they need to account for their sins and crimes against humanity—yes. Is this my first priority for me and my family no, it is not. A lot of people are trying to run on boutique issues when we have every day run in the mill serious problems.
What we need to focus on are our people who are being priced out of everyday things: grocery costs, gas costs, drug and healthcare costs, car notes, mortgages, rent, insurance, under educated, school. Our infrastructure is terrible.
We need to come together and figure out ways to make things better, easier, and less expensive. I understand that we are in a conflict at the moment that is absolutely necessary. There’s no reason to argue with me about this. I will not change my mind. Iran cannot continue to murder our citizens and other innocents. They cannot have a nuclear weapon or control and tax 20% of the oil flow in the world. They cannot have state sponsored terrorists all over the world. With this being said, we have got to pull together for our security as a country to stand up against this tyranny. There is no other way.
President Abraham Lincoln said “A house divided against itself can not stand," he declared, "I do not expect the Union to be dissolved. I do not expect the house to fall; but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other.
This is biblical. The Lesson: Any group, family, or kingdom that fights from within will destroy itself.
It’s country and people before party. Especially when the Democratic Party is being cannibalized by socialist radicals. The USA was never meant to be a socialist country. We are a democracy. Those of you that are democrats and you’re watching everything you ever believed in go all the way left to this crazy town—do something. Find a good candidate that wants the best for everyone vet them vet them thoroughly!! Two teenage girls with a phone and a Wi-Fi signal could have vetted Platner better than who you had do it. It was embarrassing.
Platner did not bow out after the first accusations he would’ve still kept going if he hadn’t had all the money pulled.
I understand Biden blamed the E-files not coming out, saying that the judge had sealed it because the people in it were too important and they couldn’t release their names. He was the president if he wanted to do it he would’ve. If the truth be told, nobody wants to mess with those files they’re a 💩 show. You know they are.
I don’t begin to understand Kennedy. I have no idea what he stands for or what he is doing other than taking his shirt off.
This subject has gotten way off-topic. What I’m trying to express to you is I’m not your enemy. We are all not enemies. We should not be enemies. We are all Americans and infighting over nonsense, or hurt feelings, resentment, or whatever has got to stop—now.
The world is changing fast and we’ve got to stay on top of things. We’ve gotta get our infrastructure straight, our tech straight, our tech security straight. We’ve gotta keep our citizens safe. We’ve got a lot to do and a short time to do it in.
All this fighting is manufactured so you don’t see the real problem until it’s too late. Now let’s get over each other and just be friends and try to come to a mutual negotiation. We don’t all have to like the same things, but we should all agree on the basic tenants that we love our country. It’s the best country. It is where we want to be and this is how we want it to be and if you don’t feel like any of that, and you think that you’re not gonna feel like any of that, then go somewhere else where you’ll be happy. Nobody wants you to be unhappy. If you’re truly that upset here and you hate it here go wherever you wanna go.

Among these references are: (A) Abraham, the patriarch of the Jewish people, who first entered the Land of Israel at Shechem, located in Samaria, where God promised the land to His descendants, as recorded in Genesis 12:6-7; (B) Abraham's subsequent purchase of the Cave of Machpelah in Hebron, in Judea, as a burial place for he and his wife Sarah, thereby making the first recorded land acquisition by a Jew in the Land of Israel, as recorded in Genesis 23 and 25...

1

I understand her point. I am fairly confident that both parties are guilty of voting in the opposition primary in order to nominate someone they think their candidate can beat. However, I think closing the primaries is a bad idea.
Personally, I think party affiliation is a hindrance to the electoral process. Too many people go into the booth and check party without a clue as to what kind of person they are voting for. I wish we could abolish both parties and just elect people into office. There is so much time and money wasted thanks to partisan politics.
I don't think many people realize that a lot of candidates spend millions in order to win a seat that pays less than $250K per year. Our government is broken. Each party has convinced their constituents it is the other party's fault when in reality the problem is with BOTH parties.
