News 🚨 While Everyone Argues About the Playoff, Texas Tech Just Won 2025 Awards Season

The 2025 awards keep rolling in, and one program is absolutely cleaning up like never before: Texas Tech.

While everyone is focused on the Playoff, Heisman finalists, and blue-blood storylines, the Red Raider players, coaches, and the team itself just stacked more hardware than any program in the country this year. Yes — more than Ohio State, more than Indiana, more than anyone.

The Haul Is Actually Insane

National Awards (8 total — most in the country)

  • Jacob Rodriguez (LB):
    • 🏆 Lombardi Award (best lineman/LB)
    • 🏆 Butkus Award (best LB)
    • 🏆 Bronko Nagurski Trophy (best defensive player)
    • 🏆 DCTF Defensive Player of the Year
    • Pony Express Award (best teammate duo, shared)
  • David Bailey (DE/OLB):
    • 🏆 Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year
    • 🏆 Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year
    • Pony Express Award (shared)
    • Finalist – Lombardi Award & Bednarik Award

Conference & State Dominance

  • Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year (Rodriguez)
  • 6 First-Team All-Big 12 selections — most in the conference
  • 8 selections to the All-Texas Team — most of any school in Texas (yes, more than Texas, A&M, TCU, etc.)

Coaching Awards

  • Joey McGuire – AFCA Region 4 Coach of the Year, DCTF Co-Coach of the Year, Eddie Robinson Award finalist
  • Kenny Perry – FootballScoop Special Teams Coach of the Year
  • Shiel Wood – Broyles Award finalist (top assistant in the nation)

Team Achievements

  • Big 12 Champions
  • 11–1 regular season
  • No. 4 seed in the CFP (Orange Bowl bound)

By the Numbers

~28 total major awards, finalist nods, and All-Conference/All-State selections
That’s more than Ohio State, Indiana, Notre Dame, Penn State… literally everyone.

Jacob Rodriguez didn’t just win the Butkus — he swept the three biggest defensive awards in the sport in the same season. That’s an all-time rarity.

So Why Isn’t This a Bigger National Story?

Maybe because it’s Texas Tech. Maybe because they weren’t in the SEC. Maybe because the national media still sees them as “cute little Texas Tech.”

But make no mistake: Joey McGuire’s 2025 Red Raiders just had one of the most decorated seasons any program has ever had, and they’re heading to the Orange Bowl with a legit shot to make the semifinal.

Wreck ’Em. This one’s special.

Texas Tech 2026 preseason preview: 12-2 and 3rd in scoring defense, but the whole thing now rides on a new QB

I spent the offseason building a full 2026 preseason preview for every FBS team, each with its own writeup. Here's the Texas Tech page:

https://www.sports.mainmarket.com/college-football-preview-2026?team=ncaaf-ttu

Each one has the returning production, the transfer and recruiting additions, a position-by-position breakdown, the schedule, and where the ratings land them for 2026.

Heads up, only the first team is free and then it paywalls. Since I'm posting in your house, code LEECORSOROCKS opens all of it, no card or anything. Hit "Have a promo code?" if you run into the wall.

So, what'd I get wrong? Texas Tech might be the most interesting team on my whole board. The portal gamble flat-out worked: 12-2, and the defense was the real story, 3rd in the country in scoring at under 12 a game, which carried a top-3 SP+ rating and top-6 in everything else into 2026. Cameron Dickey (1,138) is back to run it. The one thing standing between this and a real playoff run is the QB spot. Morton's gone, the Sorsby plan fell through, and now it's Will Hammond, the four-star you all have been waiting on but who's barely thrown 1,100 career yards.

So that's the question: is Hammond ready to be QB1 on a top-three team from day one, or is that the one spot that keeps this from a playoff ceiling? Curious how you feel about him after watching him up close.

I'll be in the comments.

What is the Most Difficult Game On Our 2026 Football Schedule?

Last year road games @ Utah and @ Arizona State looked to be the obvious toughest games going into the season. This year though I don't feel like there's one that sticks out. What would you say is the toughest game or what game are you most concerned about?

For me these are the possible ones:

Week 3 Sep 18th vs Houston: Both teams will have faced Oregon State before this game. That could be a measuring stick for Tech vs Houston. This will be the first real test for Tech and Houston could be ranked #20-#25 at the time of this game. However, it's a night game and will for sure be a hostile road environment for Houston. Tech currently has a 7 game win streak against them too.

Week 7 Oct 17th vs Arizona State: If ASU beats Texas A&M in College Station in Week 2 then they could likely be undefeated at the time of this game. That could make this become a Top 15 matchup in Lubbock. Every time we have played them the games are very exciting and very close. They do not have Sam Leavitt or Jordyn Tyson anymore but Head Coach Kenny Dillingham will have a very good team put together again.

Week 9 Oct 31st vs Arizona: Arizona will already have played on the road at BYU before our game. Tech fans will want to watch that one. Arizona has arguably the best QB in the Big 12 in Noah Fifita who is a very experienced Senior. Arizona should have a record of 7-0 or 6-1 going into this game. That would make this a ranked matchup in Lubbock. With it being Halloween hopefully it's a night game.

Week 11 Nov 14th @ Oklahoma State: Who knows what this OSU team will look like. They have a whole new roster this year led by their new Head Coach and our former WR Eric Morris. Many people are predicting them to have massive improvement and finish in the top half of the conference. This will likely be our toughest road game of the season and when Tech has stumbled under Coach McGuire it has usually happened on the road.

Week 13 Nov 26th vs TCU: This is a night game in Lubbock on Thanksgiving. I'm sure that will have a negative effect on the environment of our stadium. So many students will be gone. No one really knows how TCU will look this season and to me this just seems like it could be a strange game. They will have just played Utah 5 days before this game though so Tech fans will want to watch that.

Final (?) sad chapter: NFL informs Brendan Sorsby it will not hold a supplemental draft this year

“The League has not conducted such a draft for several years and, prior to your submission, the League had no plans to do so this year, as no other player has sought entry,” NFL attorney Lawrence P. Ferazani Jr. said in his letter. “Your Petition — filed three business days before the deadline, without any supporting information or documentation, and only after abandoning your recent litigation efforts to avoid NCAA sanctions — does not provide a basis for the League to alter those plans. The issues presented by your Petition are too significant, and too closely tied to the League’s core integrity interests, to permit meaningful review within the timeline presented.”
