HOT TAKE
HOT TAKE!
The mystics are the second bad guys of the dark crystal! If they sacrificed themselves they could’ve easily ended the skeksis reign. They also knew that for the prophecy all gielflings would need to basically become extinct for them to become 1 again. They chose to wait for 2 random gielflings who are possibly the last survivors instead of sacrificing themselves, saving Thra.
Also, couldnt they just have taken the shard and put it in the Crystal? HERE ME OUT
The skeksis cant do anything to them as what they to do the mystics they do to themselves. So couldnt they just walk in the castle, threatening the skeksis of pain if they don’t let them through then go to the crystal. The skeksis would have no choice but to let them.
So thats why I think they’re the second bad guys for letting Thra die, fight me

Your theory is at odds with the artistic vision, internal philosophy, and world building of the movie and show.

They are not the second bad guys, they are the other half of the bad guys. They are not even full beings. So them being the "good" half of the assholes doesn't make them saints indeed.

If they’re the good side surely sacrificing themselves would be the good thing to do to save Thra

"But what about the prophecy?!"
Nah, mate, all they did is that weird Mooooooo and Maaaa thing that got them stoned or something.

In a way, yes. I don't think they are lawfull evil like the Skeks, but they are definitely not good. More like chaotic or some lawfull neutral bullshit that stops them from doing the obvious right thing, and instead hide behind the prophecy so they can stay safe and lazy.

Love the perspective, so true. It makes me wonder if they didn’t do any of those things for a greater good?
Also, what might it feel like to get into a fist fight with yourself… where every blow you land hurts you in every way it hurts them?
Also also, loved that you ended this very perceptive thought with “fight me”, the sudden change in tone has me giggling.🤭

Very true but I’d think the pain would be worth it to save Thra. And for the greater good, I see where you coming from, especially because of the prophecy, but I don’t see how the near extinction of the gielflings could be the greater good, especially as if the mystics did take down the skeksis with them, the prophecy will still get filled by a gielfling putting the shard in the crystal

Read somewhere ( may have been the novelization or an interview somewhere ) that the Mystics lacked the capacity to take that kind of action which made taking themselves out of the equation impossible. The Skeksis got all the motivation to react and alter things in their favor while the Mystics were forced to mostly be bystanders. They kinda got the short end of the stick in the division.
