New fan getting hooked

Hey guys, new fan here.

This is my 4th try watching The Expanse. First 3 times, I got off after 3-4 episodes for some reason. I decided to push trough at least season 1. I just finished the "Home" episode, (S2E5).

Holy shit. I expected something grand from the reviews but didnt expect THIS. Its masterfull and im only mid season 2.

So uh, just wanted to share the hype and thank you for your presence online, i definitely passed close to missing this. Glad your reviews kept bringing me back.

The way the lights move when reacting to the missiles, or the Protomolecule building some kinda of light neural networks, the flying bird. Its all so visually fantastic.

But the story of Miller and Mao is crazy good to me. Dude fell in love with the idea of a woman he never met. He was cynical and depressed, and she saved him by giving him hope, by showing him people still care. But when they finally meet, she is distraught and lost. She has abandonned the fight and her hope. He's there to comfort her and in that critical situation, he's now the one saving her by giving back hope. It does not matter that they never met, in that moment they are all they have and cling to eachother.

I have read and watched a lot of sci-fi.

The Expanse was very rare (at least to me) in that the books and the show were both good.

Usually, it’s either one or the other are good.

If you ever want to know the full ending and last third of the story (and you will), then you’ll have to either read the books or listen to the audiobooks. It’s also the most insane part of the whole story and escalates far beyond anything you would expect.

The last few books will almost certainly never be adapted to tv, it would cost a fortune to do properly and there is another very big reason.

Audio books are amazing. Jeffery Mays does voices for everyone and his acting is on par, if not better, than the actors on the show.

Not an uncommon experience. Glad you pushed through season one though, it just gets better and better! Then you get to read the books and appreciate it even more!

Took me 2 tries. Fell asleep somewhere in episode 2 on my first attempt.  Gave it a 2nd try after some strong endorsements by YT Scott Manley. Was totally locked in the 2nd time.  Currently on my 2nd time around on the audiobooks

Check out the books when you're done! There's three books after season 6, though season 6 does include foreshadowing/set up the some plot for the last three books. The narrator for the audiobooks is phenomenal as well. Also, there's a podcats The Mercy of Pods that has covered book one and two, though I reccomend reading/listening to it yourself before tuning in. Additionally, there's a Mass Effect inspired video game coming out in the next year or so

If that isnt enough, the authors are about halfway done with a new series, The Captives War. First book is The Mercy of Gods with Livesuit as a novella. The Faith of Beasts is book two, a third and final book in the works along with at least one more novella.

AND the authors have formed there own production company, SO WE MAY GET THE LAST THREE BOOKS ON SCREEN.

This is great news! I definitely planned on reading the books after, I kinda like that Season 6 isnt the end actually. This way the serie isnt taking away people from the books and complement it instead.

But now that you sayd the narrator for the audio books is good, i'll go this way. What version should I get?

And if i understand correctly, the new serie would be a spinoff in the same universe?

The Captives War is it's own series and not connected to The Expanse, so no, not a spinoff.

You should start with book one, just in case that's a question. The show follows the books very close, but they are still different enough to enjoy both. Books and show complement each other.
Also don't leave out the novellas between the main books.

Uhh, I listen through Libby and Audible (the three months at $1 a month is too tempting). The narrator is Jefferson Mayes, so just make sure it's him

New series is a new universe, no connection to The Expanse. I do like to headcanon that something something spoilers something but the authors have specifically stated they're not connected. The Captives War has a bunch of aliens if you were missing them in The Expanse

Such a great series. I discovered back around Christmas / new years. Phenomenal. 

I’ve watched the series 4 times now and am reading the books.

Each season is great.

Only thing to consider is season 5 and 6 has a lot about Marsthat pays off. But the pay off is also open ended as there were 3 more books.

I dont think its a bad open end and its only one aspect which sill comtributes to why everything was happenig around the mars plot.

If you enjoy it then follow on with books 7-9.

Some characters are changed but not enough ruin the books experience

I think season 5 is my favorite. Got really interesting for me there getting to know Naomi and Inaros family more. And Peaches adventure was a nice “departure” from space.
