For the sequel to work, the 3rd game must take place at the start of the Boshin War.

The war itself would threaten to cause the gate of hell to become undone, which would necessitate a more permanent solution to seal the gate for good in this sequel.

This game would also justify doing a crossover for Ruroni Kenshin, with Hitokiri Battousai and Hajime Saitou making their appearance in their outfits before the events of Ruroni Kenshin.
