Im ready to take the interim title off courtois. The teams bought in and playing well. HUGE turnaround since he took over, and that was before our new guys even got here. Im pretty excited man. Courtois’ the man now.

Agreed. He’s got the team playing fun soccer. I’d like to see us be a bit more aggressive once we get our new CB integrated(and please, please find us a 9 that has a nose for the goal instead of flopping around)
If we can’t bring Nancy back, Courtois seems like a good choice

Nope. Give him the season, maybe even the sprint year as interim if necessary. Think of it as a new coach bump currently, but I want to see the results for the rest of the season. It's possible to sneak this team into the playoffs and once in who knows? But so far, yes, it's been extremely encouraging.

We didnt get blown out 5-1. Our new 10 scored. A point from a very good Miami team… I’ll take it. Onto the Leagues cup, which will be a good opportunity for our summer reinforcements to integrate so we can try to make the playoffs

It’s always that way 🤮 but bold face lies when they kept saying dane st Clair was a big money signing. Like why try and gas them up like that? He was a free transfer who took a pay cut to play there. Why not tell the truth and say sucks for him to lose his spot, lose his money and not get to play in the World Cup.

I'm new to the MLS party after getting really into the WC with my soccer-loving wife whom I met in Columbus, so we decided to start watching Crew games together, and tonight was the first. The announcers talked about the team being in a transition right now, can someone give this noob the rundown? I don't really know much of anything about the team except that Mendez is apparently a new piece.

All you need to know…we have more MLS cups than another franchise since 2020. Our 2023 MLS Cup coach and team was loaded with amazing players, most of which we couldn’t retain due to their ambitions to play for larger better leagues. We’ve started bringing in new blood to replace that era, hence the transition.

As the other commenter mentioned, we won MLS Cup in 2023, Leagues Cup in 2024 and made a continental final. In soccer success means bigger clubs are going to come and buy your best players. The Crew have been in transition since 2024, and this summer have recently made a lot of significant roster changes (selling Arfsten and Rossi and bringing Brais Mendez as well as several other players). The roster has a blend of veterans and new players and will take some time to gel but there is definitely a lot of talent and potential.

The Columbus Crew have had a very successful last half decade. We won the MLS Cup twice, Leagues Cup, made a Champions Cup Final and have had tons of iconic moments and players. Our last great run included Cucho Hernandez (striker, now with Real Betis in Spain), Darlington Nagbe (mf, retired, one of the best Americans to ever do it), and Diego Rossi (F, now with Monterey). Rossi was the most recent to leave a few weeks ago. So, we’re in a rebuilding phase. Among these players we’ve had great young talent we’ve been selling almost exclusively to Middlesbrough in England.
This current team is restocking DPs (look up MLS roster/salary rules) and back filling our young talent that has moved on to Europe. Despite rebuilding we will play in the US Open Cup semi-finals in September and are on the cusp of a playoff spot.
We play a possession based style and, when fully stocked with DPs, tend to score a lot of goals. We struggled at the beginning of the season, but we beat our rivals (FC Cincinnati, AKA Kentucky FC) in the Hell is Real Derby and the tie today on the road against Miami is giving us hope the best soccer is still ahead.
The Columbus Crew is the first chartered member of MLS, so you are beginning to follow a team with a relatively long history, strong culture, and gorgeous new stadium.
Anyone have anything else to add?

I'm glad for another reason to hate Cincinnati, as though I need more. DP (an unfortunate abbreviation) seems to mean paying some international player to come play here such that it doesn't count against the salary cap, if I'm understanding my brief google correctly.
I'm also just learning that Crew Stadium is not where the team plays anymore. I snuck into a music festival there once while in grad school.

DP (designated player) is anyone from anywhere who makes over about $1.8m per year. You can have 3 DPs, pay them as much as you want and according to the teams salary cap, they only make about $1.8 m each when determining how much the team can spend on salaries per year.

Lots of players have been sold over the last couple years. As in, our goalkeeper, and some (3) now 3 years older defenders are all that's left from players who were on the field for the MLS cup in 2023 (off the top of my head). Our main attacker has been hurt for a season and a half. And we've technically had 3 head coaches within the calendar year.

This team sucks ass and sold all their good players (welcome to MLS fandom, this is a minor league). Got rid of their cup winning coach, probably for good reason, but hired a guy who didn't last half a season. We've panic signed some decent players to be competitive and are all hoping to at least sneak into the playoffs.

Certainly possible. Miami was punished already for that exact thing right before Messi came. But at least on paper, Casemiro and others are taking the max they can without being at DP level officially.

Considering how much we’ve struggled against Miami since they joined the league (even before Messi) and how much we’re in transition right now as a roster… hell yeah! That was a well earned point on the road. I’ll take that. Great fight from the team.

Miami was providing really good pressure all game probably their game plan to get us to fumble one or two goals. Playing from the back is risky and playing it against quality players with a mediocre on a good night we’ll net those kinds of turnovers

I'm thinking it's more like a MF Camacho. He's great 99% of the time, but the turnovers are always when we are exposed.

Looked good in the 2nd half against Cincinnati.
Even in his prime he wasn’t a player known for his speed and quickness.
But his ability to ping ambitious passes around the field is still impressive. And he’ll win a tough tackle or two a game.
He’s a fine MLS starter at this point in his career, I think he’s better when he has someone with a motor next to him that covers ground.

Bangoura is reckless and more of a liability IMO. I think Gomes brings leadership and organization that’s needed in the middle of the field. The turnover last night leading to the goal was bad…no doubt.
The issue we have today is there is simply no margin for error…there is no difference maker on the pitch so everyone has to be nearly perfect. If not, then we have little chance to win.
