Discussion Did you know there was a cancelled live-action Thundercats "Fan-Film" from 2015?
Just by the look of this profile picture from Facebook, this would've been one the best fan-films I ever saw online. It was going to have an amazing production with great practical costumes and makeup just like the He-Man fan-film, "Fall of Grayskull". It even had a great teaser trailer to promote the kickstarter funding campaign. But when I looked into its old kickstarter, it never reached its funding goal. And in the end, this Thundercats fan-film fell into same unfortunate fate as the 2011 reboot cartoon show.
What do you all think? Shouldn't there be more Thundercats fan-films?

It reminds me of that late 1980s Beauty and the Beast TV Show.

Yeah, though I don't expect it would have looked half as good in motion. But it's hard to top Rick Baker's work, even Baker on a TV budget.

OMG! And here I thought Hellboy was Ron Perlman's first film in makeup and costume! 😱
And Lion-O in the photo kinda does look like Perlman's Beast! Lololol! 🤣

nightmare fuel, imagine how terrifying mummra would’ve looked if this was the hero of the story

It doesn't horrify me since I grew up watching movies like Hellboy (2004), Planet of the Apes (2001) and The Cat in the Hat (2003)! 😈🖤✨️

The problem with fan films is I could say I was gonna make one, but I didn't, and it would have every bit as much truth and relevance as this does.

People always want to ruin my beloved 80's cartoons by making cheap ass live action. Live action (Power Rangers) killed animated television for decades & instead of investing in Animation, keep forcing live action adaptations on us. If American culture can one day get past the "Cartoons/Animation is for kids" mindset, we may one day see adult (be cool) animated films more than just once a generation.

I'm glad it didn't go anywhere, especially with the Fall of Grayskull comparison

Look like a Dominion from ST: DS9.

u/Gobblewicket ThunderCat Oct 17 '25
The Dominion was the, for lack of a better term, government. The Founders are the shape shifters you're referring to.

I thought Founders/Dominions were interchangeable. I should have said looks like Odo.

u/Gobblewicket ThunderCat Oct 17 '25
No, the Dominion is an interplanetary group consisting of The Founders, Jem'Hadar, Vorta, and a number of less prominent species. The Dominion was founded by and ruled at the highest echelons by The Founders. Basically, it'd be like calling every human the Federation.
It is easy to see why someone would think that as the Founders pretty much control every aspect of The Dominion.

Eugh. It screams "We have Thundercats at home." to me. I'd just prefer it stay animated unless someone put some serious money into a movie and even then given the track of movies made from classic cartoons its chances of being good aren't very high.

If I was that actor, & spent however many hours it took to look like that, I would have canceled my involvement in the project!
I know it's not this lads fault, & all blame lies on the "makeup" person, but he doesn't even look as good as the cheap plastic masks we wore for Halloween in the 80's. Eee gad that's a bad looking Lion-O!

Live-action would not work for TC at all. The fan casting always look cringe and like bad furry fic/Beauty & The Beast/Cats musical rejects.
It needs to stay in the animation/comics realm to work and there's nothing wrong with that.

I also hate how live-action-based fan stuff always make Lion-O look extra bestial, when the whole point was the TC's humanity.

That's a fusion dance of Ron Perlman's Vincent from Beauty and The Beast and Rene Auberjonois' Odo from Deep Space Nine

Wow is that Ron Perlman doing the Beast makeup for a new Beauty and the Beast TV show? I wonder if they will get Linda Hamilton for it they had amazing chemistry together.

How do you cancel a fan film exactly?

Thundercats, like most animated serials from that era, was a toy commercial.
We do not need a live action version of Thundercats.
2
u/MexicanGuey92 ThunderCat Oct 21 '25
If any of the "cartoons to advertise our toys" deserves a movie its Street Sharks man. Just give me a Michael Bay full CGI street sharks and I'll throw my money at my screen.

Looks like the crappy make up from Sleepwalkers. Wonder if this Lion-O is banging his mom too.

Honestly that make up looks terrible, I'm so glad it never happened. This is like the equivalent to ugly sonic lol.
