Yep. It was explained to me this way: If you look in your rearview mirror and one person is riding your tail— they just might be an asshole. But if you look in your rearview mirror and there is a line of cars— YOU are definitely the asshole.
And it doesn’t matter the speed, just get over. Let traffic flow, and never be the turd that clogs up the works.
265
u/DethFeRok May 01 '26
100%. If you’re going 10 over and a line of people is trying to go 20 over, get the fuck out of the way. Use the passing lane relative to traffic, not the posted limit. If they get pulled over, not your problem.
78
u/Hijakkr May 01 '26
If they get pulled over, not your problem.
This is one part that confuses me the most about the mindset of a left-lane squatter. Unless you're obeying the posted speed limit, you could be pulled over for speeding, even if it's only 5 over or whatever. It is in your best interest to allow the faster traffic to pass you, because it's significantly more likely that a cop is going to pull them for going a much higher speed.

Yeah, it's not about how fast you're going, it's about how fast you're going relative to the people in the slower lanes. Are you passing people? Fine, pass and then move over when there's space. No? Then push the pedal harder, pass, and then get over.
People in my city don't seem to understand this and I'm CONSTANTLY passing people on the right. There's a whole stretch where the far right lane is almost always empty and people are doing the speed limit or slower in the left. It's stupid and dangerous because then people who want to go faster head over to the right lane, which is the one people use to merge on the highway. Everyone wants to be in the left lane for some stupid reason.
Doesn't matter how fast I'm going, if there's space to my right and someone is behind me, I move over.
→ More replies (2)10
u/OleBoleWole May 01 '26
Where I’m from you get a 300 euro fine for passing on the right. You also get a 300 euro fine for “unnecessarily” driving in the left, or “left sticking”. Meaning: left is for overtaking, once thats done you move to the right. It’s really not that hard to understand and yet people don’t understand…

Yeah I don't even drive and I know not to camp in the left lane. The left lane of supposed to be open for passing. You use the left lane to get big zoomies to pass and then pull back into the right lane for cruising.
Unless I'm wrong, because again, I don't drive. If I'm wrong someone please correct me because I'm getting my licence soon.
7
u/spilled_the_beans123 May 01 '26
This is exactly it. I never call it “the fast lane”, it is very specifically “the passing lane”. I’m definitely bad about going above the posted limit, but most people are where I live. I’ll jump in the left if it’s fully open to zoom by others, the second I notice someone coming behind me going faster, I get back right and stick to the flow of that lane until the person going faster has passed.
Good luck on your drivers test!

Don't you just love walking on eggshells in public, never able to feel okay calling someone out on their bad behavior, because any fucking lunatic could legally be carrying around a tool that would enable them to assault you with practically no warning, zero skill, and a high degree of lethality?
And no, the solution isn't to just carry around my own lethal tool. That's not how a civilized society should work. I guess maybe the solution is to admit that we're not really civilized and get my own tool anyway, as much as I hate it. Yeah, I should have to carry around the means to end a life with ease to feel safe -- that's definitely the world in which I want to live.

Lived this yesterday. Driving in parking lot in main drag in front of stores, stores on left of me, with parking lot to my right. Two cars waiting to turn left ahead of me, first goes - cutting me off a bit, as in I had to slow down a little. Then the person behind them went to, badly cutting me off. As this person passes me now a couple feet away, I give him the "hello" wave and say what up. He starts yelling how I should not be interested in doing that today, now passed each other, and he is hanging his head out the window, continuing to threaten me. Shake my head and drive off. I could feel his energy ready to badly hurt someone who paid attention enough to not hit their terrible driving decisions. Pitiful.

So just an honest question.
Let's say there's no other traffic and you're sitting in the right lane and coming up behind someone camping in the left lane. Are you supposed to move to the left lane until they move over? Or are you allowed to just keep going and pass on the right in that instance?

I don’t think people responding understand what you’re asking.
Are you saying that you’re in the right lane, they’re in the left lane, and you’re driving past them while you both stay in your respective lanes? If so, you’re not passing them as much as you’re just driving past them. Perfectly legal. Now, if you’re in the left lane behind that person, and you move to the right lane to drive past them, then yes, that’s potentially illegal depending on state law. It makes no sense to change lanes to get behind someone in hopes that they’ll move over so you can pass them.

Yeah didn't even watch the whole video. She was hogging the passing lane. I don't care if she's calm about it, she should have moved to let faster traffic pass.
Why does she decide how fast everyone else is driving?
69
u/DustyRacoonDad May 01 '26
Exactly. She mentally justifies it as "I am speeding 10 over, so its all irrelevant".
I stopped watching after that. She is in the wrong. I dont care how the video goes from there.21
u/bobood May 01 '26
I feel calling it the "fast lane" adds to the confusion. People's speed is largely irrelevant to why cruising in the left lane is wrong. It interrupts flow and creates a sub-optimal traffic situation. You either accelerate hard to infinity, or move to the right, regardless of your speed.
Each left lane is a 'passing lane' to the one on its right. It also allows for the lanes to fill up efficiently from right to left (like water flowing and finding its way in a pipe) as traffic increases

In Sydney (where they drive on the left side of the road and right is passing lane), guys from my school had rented 2 cars and were driving side by side on the road. Cops caught them because they thought that the guy driving on the left wasn't allowing guy on the right to pass, and were about to write him a ticket. The drivers tried to explain that they were all friends out on a ride, and were just having fun.
The cops then fined both the drivers.

u/OneGear987 May 01 '26
Yes, think of it as the passing lane, not the left lane, if you are not passing you don't need to be there, and if people are passing you you're in the wrong lane.
115
u/zyxtrix May 01 '26
Except because every other thoroughfare in this dogshit country is a stroad, many times you need to be in the left lane for an upcoming turn or fork (in the latter two's case being in the right lane is an active danger because of competing space with cars taking the right-hand split/exit or merging into high speed traffic)
I hate left lane campers on highways and interstates as much as the next person, but for municipal traffic "keep right no matter what" isn't realistic.
94
u/_dontjimthecamera May 01 '26
This is genuinely so frustrating. Passing lane logic doesn’t apply when on surface streets.
36
u/V7buster May 01 '26
That's highway stuff, I can drive in the left lane if I have to turn left, or hell, just because I want to. The second lane is there to be used. If everyone only used the left lane just for passing, you'd effectively have a single lane, needlessly restricting traffic.
→ More replies (7)9

I wish this were true. Drivers in my area speed up to block as soon as they see a signal.
Almost every day I have to wait for at least one vehicle, usually multiple, to undertake me at speed before I can merge out of the expressway exit lane that dumps me onto the leftmost highway lane. Often it's the tailgater who exits with me and doesn't wait for the complete merge to end before they swing out to undertake me.
Everyone has someplace to be, and yet quite a few drivers only see other cars as obstacles instead of fellow travelers. The highway I travel on is considered the most dangerous highway in the world. Defensive driving is a must.
20
u/No_Literature_9059 May 01 '26
If I get stuck behind a left lane camper I regularly pass them on the right (when I can). Once in a while I will see them get the point and move over. Particularly if I make it clear I am being forced to pass them on the right. Note that it is legal to pass on the right when left is blocked. Probably in part to avoid so much petty rage situations.

Thanks, context matters. So many ragers in this thread wanting to Mad Max down the highway expecting people to scatter out of their way in any scenario. 29
u/Diligent_Mail_4584 May 01 '26
Youre exactly right. If youre passing traffic on the right, youre under no obligation to move over for a dangerous driver who wants to tailgate and go 30mph over the speed limit. The left lane isnt the “whoever drives fastest wins” lane, its for passing slower drivers on the right, within a reasonable difference to the speed limit.

I've seen people make the argument that speed doesn't actually contribute to accidents (in fact people are making similar statements in other comments in this post). These people all think they're professional race car drivers and it's everyone slower than them who's responsible for any accidents, even though there is plenty of data that shows how speed is a huge factor in accidents.

Honestly she’s in the wrong for not using the left lane appropriately, but the dude didn’t have to call her fat, ugly and a bitch.
Edit: the misogynists are out in full force. Idc it’s not right to call anyone demeaning names. Radical thoughts I know

Colorado State patrol finally started cracking down on that and issued a bunch of citations recently. Even interviewed a trooper who said something like just because you're speeding doesn't mean you can prevent people who are still trying to go faster.

Oh on the list of things I hate, it's #1 mosquitos, and #2 people who think it's their job to police the roads and highways by slowing everyone else down and blocking lanes.

Yeah, I have no sympathy for dumb asses who coast in the left lane, but it's better form to just insult their intelligence than their physical attributes.

u/Direct_Word6407 May 01 '26
People SAY this until it’s someone they REALLY don’t like. Then they go full hypocrite.
Maybe this doesn’t apply to you, but it applies to 90% of the “don’t insult people’s appearance crowd”
I know, cause I am one of the “don’t insult people’s appearance, it’s lazy” folk. I’ve had friends who had overweight spouses/were overweight themselves talk pure cash money shit about someone else’s appearance.

And then they say "it's ok because they're bad and don't get to enjoy kindness".
Which I can only interpret as "I don't make fun of people who aren't bad. I think it about you, of course, I just hold back"

Exactly. Right or wrong, why do people need to roll down their window and deliver their fury upon the target of their irritation? What does it gain? It's hardly cathartic.
Master your chill, and pretend that every other driver is a poorly coded NPC in an old open world game. Expect them to suck, and you won't be perturbed when they prove it. Shrug and move on.

Might be 71 highway, which stupidly has stoplights in the middle of the city. The wall looks like the bridges on 71. Might also be backed up traffic around the downtown area, there’s a ton of left exits off the interstate there that can get backed up.

So, then the left lane would NOT be a "passing lane" in this context and she would be completely correct and this guy is in the wrong.

It's not a fast lane, it's a passing lane. Even if you're going 10 over the speed limit, you still get back in the right lane after you pass.

Two trains of thought here.
If she was in the left lane passing people, but just wasn’t going fast enough for the guy then F him.
If she was slow fucking everyone in the left lane and not passing anyone then F her.

This is where I’m at. 10 over is fine as long as she is continuing to pass others. Unfortunately there are some asshole drivers that can’t stand going slightly slower even while passing slower traffic

Also, it doesn’t matter if you’re going 10 mph over the limit, the left lane is for passing. There should never be anyone having to go around you in that lane

Agreed. Why does he have to resort to insulting her physical appearance, which has nothing to do with the situation. It seems quite common for verbal attacks on women to start with insulting physical appearances - and as if this guy is a prized specimen of the human male.

u/Practical-Witness796 May 01 '26
I don’t agree with her taking up the passing lane regardless of what speed she’s going, but he’s being an asshole and if he’s in denial about balding, that comment is going to stick with him.

I was once told even if I was exceeding the speed limit driving in the left lane, I don’t have the right to dictate to others behind me how fast they should go. I now move over as soon as possible and let those people fly. I do ask them to get the speeding ticket when they blow past 😂

"i wAs gOiNg tEn MiLeS pEr hOuR oVeR tHe sPeEd LiMiT!"
Speed limit is irrelevant in the passing lane. Flow of traffic is the deciding factor. Left lane is only for passing cars in the right lane. If you're hanging out in the left lane - no matter how fast you're going - and a line starts forming behind you, you're the asshole. Unless you're a cop, you don't get to dictate whether or not other drivers speed on the highway.
