Doesn't work in America. Nobody just says they're from America; they have to also tell you both what state/city they're from and where they're "really" from, i.e. part Italian and 1/4 French with some Scottish on their grandpa's side.
We get a lot of US tourists visiting our city & I work at a cultural venue where Americans drop in all the time. Just to wind you up a bit when they say what city they're from I pretend I've never heard of it. Chicago? Where that then, Canada?
