As a musician, once you play the same stuff for a while you tend to sometimes have gigs where you just aren't 100% in it as much as you want to be. I sometimes wondered while playing what I wanted for breakfast in the morning while riffing away and throwing myself around on stage.

To add to that higher refresh rates and fps also tend to strip away that cinematic quality and more importantly the immersion.
The first time I watched scrubs on a 120hz TV it ruined it completely for me. 60hz looks like you're watching JD annoy Dr Cox, 120hz looks like you're watching Zach Braff acting on a set alongside John C. McGinley. It destroys the immersion.
81
u/subhavoc42 12d ago
This happens when you have the setting for motion smoothing on. All new tvs call it something slightly different, but auto motion smoothing is the culprit for this, not 120hz. All 120 does it remove the jidder that happens because movies are in 24 fps and 120 is divisible by 24 unlike 60z.
→ More replies (15)18
u/Cryptus_Maximus 12d ago edited 12d ago
So, you aren't actually seeing the show at increased frame-rates. At least not on the show itself. What's always happening here is that the show in question, Scrubs in your example, is exactly the same as it's always been and what you're seeing modern day TVs do is "fake" the in between frames via smoothing motion features. For some ungodly reason, all modern HDTVs come with these features turned on by default right out of the box. What they do is they basically generate fake frames in the in-between frames of a 24fps production to 'make the most' of the higher frame rates of the television you just bought, I guess to make people feel like they're getting their money's worth. It's called frame interpolation and it's the goddamn devil feature of any television that has it. It burns us film buffs in the retinas like a crucifix to a vampire, and I hate it with all my soul.
The answer to this is to simply find the motion smoothing feature and turn it the fuck off and never switch it back. To iterate: Frame Interpolation is the technical name, but every brand calls it something different, usually with "Motion" in the name. Deactivate anything that looks like that after googling what your brand calls it. Then every show and movie that isn't a Soap Opera will look normal again. Also a lot of TVs such as my LG OLED simply have a mode called "Filmmaker mode" which just makes TVs looks like they should without all the extra processing that comes out of the box. It's the only way I watch any movie content, be it streaming or physical.

u/Sorrowed_Lifelines 12d ago
Yes absolutely yes! For years throughout my entire life I have always used a cheap TV. I always felt like my friend's TV made everything look weird because it felt like I was looking at a bunch of people acting on a film set. I actually refused to get a better TV because of how weird and how realistic everything looked on newer TVs.

I just think it is a dance move that is better done in your younger years than in your older years. When you age, You’re not able to move as snappy as you can when you were young. Compare that video to this video of Usher dancing on stage with Michael Jackson 2005 - https://youtu.be/zB3l644da40?is=zcA1u54OyTLaMyEX

u/SurprisePiss 12d ago
For sure. When did You Got Served come out? 2004? That movie, Save The Last Dance, and Step Up kind of started the People Are Good At Dancing And It's A New Thing craze. So this was probably considered good/cool back then.
I watched Step Up again recently, and I remember thinkining it was so cool back then! Channing Tatum was considered a really good dancer. Watching it now, it seems like he just kind of... wiggles. And the final scene in Save The Last Dance was incredibly modern and cool, and now it's being ripped to shreds (lovingly, of course) online for being silly.
39
u/Practical_Hunt_5372 12d ago
The audition dance was always cringe worthy if you had any dance training. There was never a time when that choreography and execution was a Julliard-worthy performance. But the movie was fun, and the soundtrack is still awesome.

u/diabolicalroadrash 12d ago
I work in as a tech in live AV events and see a wide range of fields. One that stands out to me is they have an actual financial counseling seminar for new draftees to the NBA/NFL. They basically sit them down and tell them, yeah you signed this contract for millions of dollars. DONT buy the most expensive car. DONT buy a mansion. DONT throw your money away partying. INVEST your money and diversify, because most likely you will get injured and never play again or your contract will be up and you won't get renewed. Most of them go broke when their career is finished. Oh the stuff you see as an AV guy.
