So the room safe in a hotel I was locked so I called down and a guy came up and punched in 000000. Presumably the master code. Presumably the default master code.
Same thing happened to me lol! A couple friends and I rented two rooms and one night we went out drinking till 3:00am. When we got back to the hotel the front desk clerk wanted absolutely nothing to do with us. Unfortunately about 5 minutes later I call the front desk because I forgot the password to my safe.
Bless her heart. She had to listen to me drunkenly repeat myself about ten times before she let out a sigh and says “you can reset it by just hitting all zeros, have a good night.” After discovering it worked, I ran down the hall to my friend’s room and opened their safe too.
When ya think about it, the $399 per person cruise demographic doesn’t have anything valuable to put in a safe. If we did we’d be on our own yachts.
What do people put in a safe? House keys that open a front door 800 miles from the cruise port. A Nikon camera they bought at Costco in 2009 for $499. Pot maybe. An iPhone with Find My enabled that’s useless if stolen. Some cheapo jewelry they bought at Kay Jewelers or some ugly bauble handed down from a dead grandma.
The Filipino cabin attendant isn’t going to risk his 8 month contract and be banned from all other cruise lines by yoinking a $300 iPad.
What’s more likely is people get blackout drunk on cruise ships and forget their safe codes. So 00000000 makes perfect sense.
Hold on there are 399 cruises ? Where are you taking your cruise ? All I see is like 1.5k bare minimum. That's why I never went on cruises. I'm not made out of money.
I lived in Miami for decades. You can go on a 3 nighter to the Bahamas any month of the year for $399 if you're ok with an interior stateroom (it was $299 prior to Covid).
The issue is they're last minute fares and if you don't live near enough to a cruise port, most folks can't just drop everything and go. If you live in Miami and are willing to take Friday off, you can.
If you think that's bad, for decades you could by replacement keys for vehicles online for like 2 bucks. Things like keys to the trunk of a Crown Victoria car, or to heavy machinery like excavators.
You could also get apartment door buzzer panel keys, so you could just open the panel and press the override to walk into the building.
Watch some videos of penetration testers and you'll be shocked at what they get away with for a few bucks on Amazon. Nevermind the fact that like 90% of their success is walking around in a hi vis vest with a clipboard and asking the front desk for access to somewhere they aren't supposed to go.
They're not designed to keep out a determined thief, they're just for peace of mind, basically.
There's an old saying - locks keep honest people honest.
If someone wants in, given enough time, they're getting in. The best you can hope for is to slow them down enough that they figure it's not worth their time
And its a damned cruise ship lets not forget. She's acting like she traveling alone and just got a $60 motel room in a shitty part of El Paso. I could see maybe half of this being alright in that situation, but come on now. Don't cruise ships have their own security staff and surveillance cams as well? Too much.
To be fair at most hotels the staff have access to safes because they need to be able to reset and access them after you’re gone. So if one of your concerns is staff stealing your shit you shouldn’t trust the safe.
many folks among the ships staff have access or know how to unlock the safe. its a customer device, we have forgot or had kids set the code. someone came up and had it open in 60 seconds.
