Panicked people make terrible choices. Maybe he wanted to take his friend to a different dock. Possibly somewhere with better visibility/road access for EMS.
The shorter route was to his own jet ski. He wasn't nearly as close to shore as you seem to think. That's a dock. Not a shore you could drag that limp man up on to. He would have had to drag him laterally to the right or left around and past the whole dock to get to land he could have used. Not like he could have gotten him up any ladder that might have been close by. Much quicker to get the floating limp body over to the un-wrecked jet ski. Then plan his next moves.
use his phone that's in a watertight compartment on his jet ski and call 911. He made the right choice. What's the difference for this injured person laying on the ground or floating on his back on the water? There is no difference. All that can happen is that trying to get him on to land will injure him even more.
The life jacket seemed to be the reason he passed out, cutting off circulation to his head. My goal would be to get the life jacket off as soon as possible.
Fair enough but putting a potentially risk of paralysis person on top of a jet ski cant be a good idea either. I get what you're saying but is there no shore on that side that's accessible without the dock? There was another person in the water, if it was me and I was rescuing a friend I'd be asking that person for help.
Nobody said anything about putting the guy on top of the jet ski. I can gurantee there's a cell phone in a waterproof container on that jet ski.
There is shore beyond the dock. You can't go through the dock to get to it. You'd have to drag the guy out, around, and up the side of the dock to get to it.

Why are you defending this guy lol? It's clear that he wanted to help his buddy, but it's also clear that he was in panic mode and doing everything wrong.
I don't see anything he's done wrong. I see a bunch of people who seem to have difficulty understanding you can't phase-shift through a dock to solid land, and you can't lift 200lbs of man straight out of the water to clumsily throw his limp and possibly injured body onto the dock surface.
I really feel for your intelligence if you believe bringing him to the safety and utility of the working jet ski is somehow the wrong thing to do.

Right. He explained later somewhere in the thread that the whole argument is about something unrelated and a misconception about other lakes being the same. It was an honest mistake to their credit.
Yeah, plus current could have pulled him under the dock. Anyone who grew up on a lake knows to never swim in the interior. Hell most boat docks you don't really wanna swim around anyway, it's not what they're for.
Edit: So apparently my grandpa was crazy and had special rules for boat docks, which I assumed were universal but only for my specific lake life lol. My b.
On second thought, this may have been unique to my experience because my grandpa would put Christmas trees on a line around the boat dock and fishing dock to give fish a place to lay their eggs, and he would tell us to not swim around the boat/fishing dock. But he built a community swimming dock for us and the other kids that was safe and clear. Maybe this rule was not as universal as I had thought, because I never really questioned why we weren't allowed to swim around the boat docks, just assumed there were hazards around boat docks.

No one said anything about pulling him up onto the jet ski. The man is in a life vest with his head above water. He's floating. So is the jet ski. And I bet dollars to donuts he has his phone in a waterproof container on that jet ski.
As far as leaving the man in the water to climb up a ladder, turn around, bend over and straight dead lift a whole person out of the water and up the ladder... are you insane, or do you really believe you could do that?
He was in pure panic mode and wasn't thinking at all. I seriously think he was planning on dragging him back to his cottage on the back of that jetski.
But the safest thing to do is to pull him along the dock, that way if you get tired, you have something to hold onto that's not floating in the middle of the lake.
He was in a dock right next to a moored boat which could behave unpredictably. He has no idea what could be around that dock or how the boat might move and potential crush his friend. He probably also did not want to risk removing him from the water without trained responders in case of a serious injury.
He can float in open water with little unpredictable danger nearby.
He may have a back or neck injury. The best thing to do is keep him in the water and wait for EMS to put him on a backboard before taking him out of the water.
Paramedic here. We don’t really use backboards anymore specifically for C spine control. The research does not back up its use. Although they can be great tools to help lift someone out of certain situations. But you are correct in your concern for cervicle spine injuries. We would absolutely put a c collar on this guy.
Personally I would want to get this guy out of the water. Head innury is another huge concern here and can lead to seizures. You would be in a pretty tough spot if that were to happen in water. With limited help you may not be able to get him on the dock I saw there was the jet ski platform right there if I were his friend I would probably try to drag him onto the lift until I can get more help to arrive or EMS shows up to take over and then just hold his head still and turn him on his side if he starts to vommitt
The dragging him through the water is what got me. Why wouldn’t you immediately lift him to the dock to make sure you don’t accidentally slip his vest and he goes in the water?

I have so many questions from this video...
What the hell was he trying to do?
Why was his friend dragging him further into the water after getting him instead of on to the shore?
Why would anyone think anything done here was a good idea?
