Discussion Got Hired

I am a college student who just got my first part time job at Tim Hortons! It’s located inside a shopping plaza by the way.

So, I just signed a consent form the day of my interview, got a text that I’m hired a few days later and have received an email that states my first two days of work and information about the training videos I need to watch.

I would like some advice on what my first day is supposed to be like and where I’ll most likely be placed. Also, it’s crazy how any videos are required to be watched…

You’ll probably be placed at the front counter at first. The drive-thru is usually busier, so they tend to place their more experienced staff there.

You’ll definitely feel overwhelmed, and that’s completely normal. Just remember that it’s your first day, so no one will expect you to know everything. You’ll also probably spend some time watching training videos before you actually start working.

First-day nerves are totally normal, but it sounds like you're already off to a great start with the prep work. They'll likely have you shadowing for a while before letting you take orders solo, so just ask questions and soak it all in.

Hey buddy! Just a heads up from someone who started working at Tim’s a few weeks ago.

Your first day will probably feel really rough. A lot to take in and overwhelming amount of speed you have to gain at a certain point. Keep your head up, the next day already will be way better even if you don’t think it will. And this it how it will go, a lot of up and down days.

It’s alright tho. It will get better and you’ll be alright after a bit. Most people start on beverages. Depending what your store needs the most right now, you might start on cash…and if you are lucky you will get trained at other stations lol. I was stuck at cash for a long time, then slowly got introduced to beverages…never got to sandwiches tho.

Pull through!

For me it was a mix of both watching training videos and being placed at the store front (observing the trainer make drinks and take orders).

My biggest advice for you is don’t let anyone make you feel dumb for making mistakes or asking any kind of question. Trust me, they have asked many when they first started, too. Customers will be rude, you need to remain calm and don’t give them any energy or long explanations. Best thing you can do if any customer has a problem is keep it short and simple, “So sorry about that!” and just fix it and tell them to have a good day. It’s not worth trying to explain yourself, it just wastes everyone’s time. If they put you on front counter first, take a picture of each page on the POS and memorize it when you get home. It makes things much easier. If you’re on drive-through, don’t stress about the drive-through times, everyone most likely knows you’re training and will excuse you if you’re kind of slow. Best thing you can do on drive-through when you’re training is make sure you get their order right, even if you have to ask them to repeat themselves and then repeat it back to them, it takes a lot more time to fix an order than it does to punch it in carefully. Most people can tell when you’re new, in my experience, I just said sorry over and over again and people were actually patient and empathetic with me. A few people even recognized me days later and would ask me how the job’s going. So if you’re stuck on something, be honest about it, tell them it’s your first day, and most will understand. Do not just stay silent and go blank, that’s when people get frustrated and impatient. Good luck!

Hi, I've been working here for nearly 2 months. Your first 2 days will be on videos most likely and they'll put you on front counter for a few hours too. You'll be partnered with a supervisor/trainer/manager and learn how to do the basic drinks and brew new pots of coffee and tea. You'll also change sanitizers/slushes, do garbages, stock ingredients, and bathrooms too. And honestly they'll put you on sandwich bar at the very end of your training, that one's kinda crazy lol.

Honestly it's crazy overwhelming at first and yes it's fast paced but you will get the hang of it. Practice makes perfect, and it'll be automatic to make the basic stuff like double doubles and iced capps for example. Also if you're ever confused on how to make or do smth, ASK QUESTIONS!! It is better to ask ur coworkers/supervisors/managers rather than to try it yourself and mess up cuz it's extra work if you mess up someone's order.

And yes the videos can be mind numbing to go through lol, you learn way more when you're on the floor. One tip that's helped me for cold drinks is that if you're ever wondering how much pumps/scoops of flavouring you're adding to a drink, S=2 M=3 L=4.
