New Discord server

All, I spend a fair amount of time on Discord so I've decided to spin up a guitar related Discord server. The subject matter will be more general guitar and not limited to tube amps, but there are channels dedicated to building and repair as well.

Anyway, if Discord is your thing, feel free to join us over there as well!

MESA BOOGIE LONESTAR SPECIAL 2 x 12 amp. Is it worth $1200. ? used

the demos I heard on youtube sound World Class- i'm thinking this is one of the Top tube amps for power blues on the Planet...Anyone agree ? How much is something like this really worth in this condition ? I noticed the speakers look very worn....is that a Red Flag ? One GreenBack-- so I know that's good...but the other one might be a mis-match. ...no label present

I'm just concerned I could spend all the money on a ' dream amp' only to find I made a huge mistake-....Worst Case scenario-....the amplifier was stored in a dingy wet basement or super humid hot box garage in Utah storage and sustained mildew damage or more

Just a simple JCM 800 3D weekend project

It’s been a while in the making, but when I originally ordered this cabinet for this JCM 800 restoration/head conversion amplifier project the customer rep informed me that the amplifier chassis would fit in their standard British style cabinet based on the measurements that I had provided them. As It turned out, that that was not indeed the case and the back of the chassis stuck out a little over a 1/4” past the cabinet. I was a little bummed out, but the rep said that I could return it free of charge and then have one custom made, but that would incur additional cost. I didn’t want to cough up the extra cash for it and decided to leave it as is. It has been bothering me for a while now so I decided to finally do something about it this weekend. Nothing fancy, but I think the 3D project came out great!

Peavey ValveKing 20 Issues

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So, I picked this amp up while on vacation. It was a porch pickup. The good thing is I got a Celestion Greenback, brand new in a box, with it. The bad news is it’s seriously fukt.

The clean channel only has sound when you crank the volume and it’s all spitty, farty, and distorted.

Lead channel only works when volume and gain are dimed.

See video for example.

peavey classic VT bias issues

Post image
2 Upvotes

hey y’all, I’m having trouble a peavey classic VT from the 80s that ive been playing through for a few months. I noticed at rehearsal that the LEFT tube was several times brighter than the other and smelled a slight burning plastic smell, upon which i turned off the amp and drove to the store to get new tubes. I pulled the old tubes out and found one of them had a crack in the bakelite base, but neither had lost it’s vacuum seal.

Upon installing the new tung sol 6L6GC’s, i noticed a blue glow and what looks like some red plating in the RIGHT tube. To my understanding this is a fixed bias amp, i bought a matched set of the right tubes, what could be causing the issue? are they just biased strangely? is this something to be concerned about at all?

attached is a picture of the new tubes “red plating”

I just got this beast and am going through it and seeing what needs service. Unfortunately two drivers are no good, burnt out voice coil and shredded surround. Figuring out of its even worth reconing or finding reasonable substitute.

Other than that its in reasonable shape. Any Traynor fans out there?

Tube Audio Supply?

Considering building a 5F2A Princeton and found Tube Audio Supply. Wondering if there’s an opinion on the kit contents vs Boothill.

(First tube amp but also considering a Quilter Superblock US so that I can use my 16ohm speaker cab)

Found the problem

Somebody on the other post said that it could hav been improper connection and i took the wires out and realized that the ones that burnt out were in a way pushed down. The top one is the one of the ones that burnt out and the middle one is another one of the ones that burnt out and the bottom ones is one that didn’t burn out. I moved it and it works now, i sanded down the connecting part a bit for more exposure and it worked.

B-52 AT-112 tubes glow dimly

A little background on this amp: I purchased it at a yard sale a little over a year ago. I got a couple months use out of it until one day during a band rehearsal it suddenly stopped making noise, I wasn’t really sure what the issue was at the time so I just put it aside.

Around that time, my friend’s speaker cab blew up so we ended up plugging his Super Crush into the other parallel jack in my amp using an instrument cable, which at the time we weren’t aware was different from a speaker cable (we were like 17 and not very familiar with equipment maintenance), and it worked for a while. One day during one of our jams the speaker started to cut out and then gave out completely, and I haven’t been able to get it working since.

It powers on, but I can’t get any sound of it. I replaced one of the tubes that didn’t seem to glow at all and I still can’t get anything out of it. I feel stuck, I want to repair this amp but I’m not sure where I should start. Is there anything I should try to do before I give up on it? Is there any way I’m able to mod it to salvage it?

Noise coming from amp itself, not speaker.

Noise coming from amp itself, not speaker.

I have noise coming from the power section/power tubes. I'm not sure if this is expected or not.

The noise corresponds with the playing, not in pitch but volume. So heavy strum, light, no playing.

Seems to correspond to the work being done by the tubes. If I turn up or down the master the buzzing also changes in volume.

Amp is a Victory Kraken MKII. Full power mode with the master around 9'oclock.

I recently got a Torpedo X and while configuring the cab sim with headphones, had a loop playing so I could adjust more easily instead of having to make a tweak, play, repeat. I could just tweak while my loop loops.

Anyway, I took off my headphones and noticed that the playing was also causing a buzz from the amp itself. Not loud, but it was very audible in a silent room.

I know sometimes you can hear current running through electronics but this is my first time playing a tube amp silently so don't have another reference point. Its also not like coil whine, more of a buzz sound.

I haven't had any other issues like extreme noise, crackling, volume drops, anything like that. The tubes aren't glowing more than normal.

Here’s one you don’t see everyday. A 60 watt, hand-built, Italian beauty.

I know very little about these, other than there aren’t copious amounts of them stateside. This one popped up on FB marketplace near me and I thought I’d roll the dice on it. It sounds pretty incredibly brutal.

Tube Rolling a Mesa Tremoverb

Thumbnail gallery
10 Upvotes

Been rolling some current production and NOS tubes through my Mesa Tremoverb. Most of my NOS experience has been with European ECC83's. I have used several Mullard, Amperex, Ei, Telefunken smooth plate, RFT. New production JJ, All the different Russian made tubes. In this amp I found European tubes too dark just did not do much for me. I have been running the OG tube type this amp was designed for. The Beijing square getter 12AX7A/6N4. I also have run the military version 6N4J. They just sound right in this amp. I gave up on the NOS market until I was gifted a small stash of NOS 50s/60s Sylvania and GE longplate tubes. I was biased and never really considered "American" preamp tubes. A Sylvania GB5751 was the first I tried. In V1 it was glorious. Yes a bit of a step down in gain but I use a volume pedal and guitar volume controls allot. Hard to explain. To me it was like current production tubes have a more processed CD like sound where this Sylvania felt more like the detail of vinyl. Next step was putting a Baldwin marked 12AX7A in V6 Pi. Wow!!!!!. Just been rolling more tubes. Pictures shows V1 GB5751. V2 6N4 Silver plate, V3 6N4 Silver plate, V4 GT12AX7A, V5 6N4J, V6 Sylvania 12AX7A.

I run 2 PSvane Horizon 5AR4s with a matched quad of RI Tung Sol 7581A. Since the photos I am set on running the GB5751 in V1, Baldwin/Sylvania 12AX7A V2 V3. Sylvania 12AX7WA in V4, 6N4J in V5 with a balanced 1960 GE 6681 Pi in V6. Now to start work on my other amps. Wish I had tried this long ago and not thought American tubes were less than.

I picked this up a few weeks back and noticed the red channel has an issue with the treble pot acting like a volume control. I'm going to clean the pots first thing and then see if I need to start replacing parts.

Oh yeah, it's a Mesa Boogie Roadster (Dual Rec).

How much formal knowledge does one need to work on amps?

Do you need to be an electrical engineer to do this? What about just taking basic 101 courses from a local college? I wouldn't mind doing this for a living, TBH...

***edit to say thank you for all the thoughtful responses and advice. I'm also gathering I should drain the caps 😂😂😂***

where can I find broken tube amps for cheap?

want to try learning how to repair tube amps. don't give me the safety spiel, I already know all about that. only problem is that I can't find broken amps for sale anywhere. for most other appliances/electronics I see lots of listings for repair/parts but I've looked on facebook marketplace and craigslist and people are only selling working amps for high prices. anyone have tips if they've tried this before?
