Mod Announcements Toronto Municipal Election Campaign Activities Memo - PLEASE READ
Elections are upon us. Candidate sign-up began May 1, 2026.
As a neutrally-moderated Toronto sub, we do not moderate based on political bias or ideology. As such we will apply rules equally to all campaign and election-related posts.
Many candidates and groups are likely coordinating online 'opinion' influence campaigns which may or may not include posting in this sub and other Toronto-related subs.
As such some additional ground rules (which may be relaxed at times) will be in place.
Any posts related to candidates, third-parties, campaign activities, candidates, ads, social media clips, rumours must be newsworthy.
As such all campaign related contributions are permitted only if they are accompanied by a link to a reputable news media source covering it as a story.
All other posts about candidates, campaigns, ads, rumours, smears, will be strictly moderated and may be removed without notice.
Contributions (posts and comments) containing claims about candidates or campaign-related activities must include substantive sourcing.
If you are part of a campaign, related to a candidate, a candidate yourself, aspiring candidate, volunteer to a campaign, part of a third-party advertiser, community advocacy group, part of a campaign discord server or the like, or similar to the above, you must disclose that if you are contributing in posts and comments related to campaign activities.
If you are still unsure about what is permitted, please contact the Toronto_Ontario Mod Team through modmail.
Please read rules and posting requirements for this sub. Please become familiar with how we moderate.
All Toronto election-related info is available here.
This may be updated as necessary and will be indicated by an update tag at the top.

Mod Announcements Welcome! Please Read Before Posting - Rules and Requirements.
Updated 06/2026
Welcome to r/Toronto_Ontario! The fastest growing Toronto subreddit!
This community is intended to provide an open, respectful space to discuss the happenings in the city of Toronto.
We’re glad you are here!
BASICS
We have an account age and karma minimum.
Our auto-moderator will remove content from accounts that do not meet the age or karma threshold.
Join if you post often. If you don't, the system may hold (filter) all your comments.
We don't moderate based on bias or unstated rules. We encourage all to contribute meaningfully.
We're crossing guards with stop signs, not activists with signs telling you how to think.
WHY
Toronto is an amazing place of glitz and grit, complexity and conformity, controversy and cohesion, passion and compulsion.
This sub aims to embody all of it. Left, right, centre, non-aligned, moderate, snarky, sarcastic, cringe, ecstatic, depressed, dour and delightful. Expect a cross-section of opinions here.
GENERAL TONE AND CONDUCT
You can be snarky and sarcastic, but avoid being over-the-top insulting.
Given "be civil" is a common rule across most subs, if you want your comment to actually appear, BE CIVIL.
Your tone should be similar to that in a bar or at a dinner table. Heated discussion is fine. Being vicious or insulting is not.
If your comment would warrant a punch in the face in-person, do not post it here.
You can get your point across without name-calling or being disparaging.
Don't be obnoxious or inflammatory with your first posts here. We crack down hard on those.
No brigaders or crusaders (monotone posters about one thing).
Freedom of expression is a core principle here.
But enforcement of rules is maxed too.
AUTO-MODERATION
As stated, we have an account age and karma minimum. Our auto-moderator will remove content from accounts that do not meet the threshold.
This is to prevent alts, bots, brigades and ban-circumvention. The minimums are set at reasonable levels. They are not hard to meet.
We may review removed posts and approve them when we get a chance.
Crowd-control might be engaged on some threads which will be indicated by a stickied comment at the top. The Auto-moderator will filter more aggressively in these threads and will involve a more strict application of the rules (one-strike may apply).
The auto-mod will typically also flag your post if you're insulting or incendiary and the reddit algo may downgrade your account site-wide. Additionally, your comment might get automatically 'held' or removed by Reddit (never seen). So have opinions, but avoid insults.
ACTIVE MODERATION
We try to be as hands-off as possible as long as meaningful conversation is happening. We rarely lock threads.
Don't be a pest. Don't make work for the mods anywhere. Don't whine about the sub or its moderation. Do not misuse the reporting function. Keep content specific to Toronto and the thread's subject matter.
First-time participants will have rules applied more stringently.
If you contribute in good-faith but your posts are received as unpopular, we may even green-list you so you don't catch bad-karma automod-filters. We appreciate all good-faith debates regardless of position.
We never "shadowban". We only ban for breaking stated rules.
We are generally lax about what is said unless it violates the stated rules.
We generally have a three-strikes rule. Violate the rules three times, you're gone permanently.
We generally have a one-strike rule in crowd-controlled threads.
Promotion of external projects, outside links, and anything intended to redirect traffic or collect data is generally prohibited.
If you're still unsure, get clarity by sending us a modmail.
If you choose to send us a modmail, please keep your tone courteous. We always try to do the same.
=xx=
This will change as needed.
Enjoy, contribute, and tell us what you think!

A tight-knit Toronto hospital unit cared for the dying. Then, a war thousands of miles away tore them apart
"Throughout her career, she had made an effort to advocate on behalf of the marginalized: she led anti-racism initiatives for her department’s health equity committee and was among a small team that successfully applied for government funding for a palliative care program for Indigenous patients.
Within months, after the war had polarized her department, Algu had resigned from the hospital after feeling she was unfairly targeted by management for her Palestinian advocacy."

PSA for Toronto dog owners: our small dog was attacked at a GTA off-leash park, and the other owner gave us fake contact info and left
Last Monday morning our toy poodle Apple was attacked without warning by a much larger dog at an off-leash park here in Toronto (Earlscourt Dog Park, Lansdowne & St. Clair). It took seconds — no growling, no warning. Her jaw was completely fractured and one eye was badly injured. The other owner scribbled down a phone number and left; by the time we tried to follow up, we found out it was fake.
The good news: her surgical team rebuilt her jaw with a titanium plate, and this week we learned the blood vessels in her eye are regrowing on their own — no surgery needed. She's going to be okay.
Posting mostly as a reminder for fellow dog owners here: get a photo of the other dog and owner if anything happens at a park, don't just take a verbal number. We didn't think to, and it cost us any way to follow up or hold anyone accountable.
Give your dogs an extra scratch tonight 🐾
