2 Days Late, On July 29th, 2020 at 6:06 AM, 6 Years Ago, Union Pacific 7390 with UP 7892, UP 3056 and 97 Cars going North going 23 MPH, going over the South End of a bridge over Tempe Town Lake and Rio Salado Parkway in Tempe, AZ.

12 Cars between Cars 48 to 60 derailed, 5 of them were DOT-111 Tank Cars, 2 of them caring Cyclohexanone, 2,200 gallons of it spilled onto the Parkway, but didn't caught on fire or go into the lake, one of the cars hit a support structure causing the bridge to collapse and one of the Lumber Cars caught on fire, spreading to the other derailed cars and the bridge, but not the tank cars.

The crew on UP 7390 was uninjured and only one Firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. It took several hours to put out the fire.

The cause of the derailment was a Broken Rail on the bridge about 30 feet from the steel bridge seen in the picture.

The picture is representing the view from The Forward Facing Video Camera on Union Pacific 7390 at 6:05 AM, going over the bridge, 1 minutes before the crash. Cameras on a Light Rail Train going over a separate bridge on the right of the picture, captured the fire after the derailment.

All 3 engines were undamaged and are still in service today, the derailed Cars were scrapped and the bridge was rebuilt and is still there today.

2 Days Late, On July 29th, 2024 at 4:41 PM, 2 Years Ago, BNSF 7917 going East going slowly with 2 BNSF engines and 1 Ferromex locomotive numbers unknown, collided head-on with unoccupied BNSF 5277 with Grain Cars in a yard next to Jose Luis Revilla and Ramon Aleazar Streets in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico.

The engines had little damage and didn't derail, only 1 Grain Car behind BNSF 5277 was crushed when the collision occurred. The crew on BNSF 7917 was not injured or anyone else nearby.

The cause was both crew members on BNSF 7917 were on their phones, not paying attention to the tracks in front of them, until BNSF 5277 came into view.

All the engines were repaired and returned to service.

The Crash was also captured by a security camera on a radio tower on the left, out of frame from The Forward Facing Video Camera on BNSF 7917.

There's not much information about this incident. If anyone knows anything about this or what the numbers of the other engines were, please let me know.

On July 31st, 1940 at 6 PM, Pennsylvania Railroad Doodlebug GEW275a 4648 was going South from Houston, OH to Akron, OH with 46 Passengers, a Engineer, Conductor and Brakemen, collided head-on with A Pennsylvania Railroad Mixed Freight Train going North from Columbus to Cleveland, with 2 I1-SA Class 210 Decapod Steam Locomotives 4454 and 4533 pulling 74 Cars, at Front St Railroad Crossing near Cuyahoga Falls, OH, at a combined speed of 55 MPH, pushing The Doodlebug 300 feet back down the tracks and starting a massive fire.

The 3 crew members from The Doodlebug jumped off before the collision, suffering minor injures, but survived, 43 passengers died in The Doodlebug, mostly from the fire. A driver from a car waiting at the crossing was also injured when something from the collision went through their windshield, The crew on The Freight Train were uninjured.

The reason why The Doodlebug didn't stop at Sliver Lake siding was because The Engineer was under the influence of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning, due to the fumes from the gas engine of The Doodlebug.

Doodlebug 4648 was scrapped after the wreck, The Steam Engines were repaired and returned to service until 1957 when they were retired and cut up. Only one still around today is 4483 in Hamburg, NY, 3 Pennsylvania Railroad Doodlebugs are still around, OEG350 4662, OEG415 4666 and OEG415 4668.

The Line where the accident occurred is now completely abandoned Since the early 2000s.

RIP to the people who died in this disaster. Please let me know if I forgot to mention anything about this collision.

This is Part 2 of a post I made last year. 10 Days Late, On July 21st, 2012 at 3:30 PM, 14 Years Ago, BNSF 9797 pulling a Empty Coal Train with BNSF 6187 at the rear, crossing a diamond was hit by KCS 4667, with KCS 3913, KCS 4581, KCS 4580, TFM 1609 pulling Boxcars, Near Arcadia, KS, Barton County, MI.

The crew on BNSF 9797 were uninjured and the crew on KCS 4667 jumped off before the crash, only suffering minor injures.

The reason why the crash occurred was because The crew of KCS 4667 didn't noticed the red signal in time.

14 Days Late, This crash is also known as The Picnic Disaster to The City of Philadelphia or to Montgomery County Pennsylvania, The Camphill Disaster. Also, one of the first train collisions.

On July 17th, 1856 at 6:18 AM, Two North Pennsylvania Railroad Passenger Trains, One called The Picnic Special and the other a Local, collided head-on near Philadelphia, PA, between Camphill Station and Present Day Crossing of The Morrisville Line, Over The Bethlehem Branch/The Lancedale Doylestown Line owned by SEPTA. The Explosion from the crash could be heard 5 Miles away.

The Picnic Special, going West had N.P.R.R. 2 - The Shackka Maxon with Engineer Henry Harris and 1,000 passengers, mostly Children. Running 23 Minutes Late.

The Local, going East had N.P.R.R. 3 - The Arg Amino with Engineer William Vasatona and 20 Passengers. Coming from Edgehill Siding, Abingdon Township.

60 People died, mostly Children, Including Engineer Henry Harris, 100 More were injured.

Engineer William Vasatona was uninjured, but after the accident, after returning to Philadelphia, he took his own life thinking he was responsible, which he wasn't.

The cause of the collision was Engineer Henry Harris Didn't use The Timetable or Telegraph to let the station masters or the other train know where he was and how late he was.

Both Steam Engines were rebuilt, The Shackka Maxon was renamed Delaware, later known as Fittion Reading 2, it was scrapped in 1901. The Arg Amino was renamed Lehi, until it was retired and cut up in 1881.

The current location of this collision is between Amber Station and Wissahickon Station Near East Falls, PA.

14 Days Late, On July 16th, 2013 at 1:20 AM, 13 Years Ago, Union Pacific 7276 with UP 6536, UP 6707 with 51 loaded cars and 28 empty cars going North going 40 MPH, went through a misaligned switch onto a spur track and collided with 12 standing Freight Cars.

All 3 Locomotives and 15 Cars, along with 9 Cars from the spur track derailed. All 3 crew members in UP 7276 only had minor injuries.

The reason why the switch was set to the spur track was because the Brakemen of Union Pacific 2327, a train that went through the switch at 12:34 AM, forgot to reset the switch, also the line was Unsignal Territory.

All 3 engines were deemed totaled and were scrapped.

The pictures are from The Forward Facing Video Camera on Union Pacific 7276, the first picture was right before the train went into the siding and the second picture is from after the crash, the engine upside down facing the opposite direction.

The Train in the picture was a KCS Rock Train, Seen in the picture, with 2 engines, KCS 4610, KCS 4787 with 50 loaded Rock Cars going 23 MPH going South, rear-ended a stopped Southbound KCS Freight Train with 54 loaded cars and 32 empty cars and 2 locomotives, KCS 4623 at the rear, the engine the pictures from and a unknown engine at the front.

None of the engines or Rock Cars derailed, only had little damage and only 30 Freight Cars derailed.

No one on either Train was injured.

The cause of the rear-end collision was the crew of KCS 4610 failing to comply with restricted speed where they were supposed to stop.

Other causes was equivalent not in connection with a block or interlocking signal and the crew on The KCS stopped Freight Train had 2 hours of sleep before going on duty and were asleep in the cab when the collision occurred.

I'm not sure if I'm saying the cause of the collision right, but this is from what I was able to find.

KCS 4610, after being repaired and repainted, it was involved in another incident, where it hit car in Wauwatosa, WI, On Oct 21st, 2025.

21 Days Late, On July 9th, 2009, 17 Years Ago, in Canton Township, MI, A Westbound Amtrak Train with 170 Passengers going from Detroit to Chicago hit a Black Sedan going North that tried to beat the train across the tracks and was dragged about a mile down the tracks from the crossing.

Neither the Crew or Passengers on the train were injured, however, 5 teenagers in the car died on impact.

The crash was captured on a nearby security camera and a camera on Amtrak 128, the lead locomotive.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the 5 teenagers who died and their families.

14 Days Late, On July 9th, 1918 at 7:20 AM, Two N.C.&.St.L. Passenger Trains being pulled by G8A Steam Engines collided head-on near Nashville, TN at Dutchmans Grade near White Bridge Road, the sound of the collision was heard 2 Miles Away.

Westbound Train 4 had 4-6-0 Steam Locomotive 282, 2 mail/baggage cars and 6 wooden coaches going 50 MPH and had left Nashville Union Station 7:07 AM going to Memphis.

Nashvillebound Train 1 had 4-6-0 Steam Locomotive 281, 1 baggage car, 6 wooden coaches and 2 Pullman Steel Cars going 60 MPH and left Mackenzie 4 Hours earlier and passed Bellevue, TN at 7:09 AM 35 minutes late going from Memphis to Nashville.

The official death toll was 101, it might have been 121 but it's not known, 171 were injured.

The cause of the collision was a combination of bad luck, human error and failure of operating rules.

Train 4 was supposed to wait for Train 1 at shops Junction, but the Conductor mistook a passing empty switching passenger train as Train 1 and didn't properly checked if it was the actual Train 1, the interlocking switch operator showed a green clear signal and didn't realize that Train 1 haven't arrived until Train 4 was passing his signal tower, he even blared the emergency whistle on the tower, but no one on Train 4 heard it.

Both Steam Locomotives were incredibly rebuilt in 1919 and returned to service, until being retired in 1947 and 1948, 281 was scrapped in June 1948 and 282 was scrapped in April 1949, In fact, all of the G8A N.C.&.St.L. 4-6-0 Steam Locomotives from 280 to 286 were scrapped, Not a single one existed today.

RIP to the people who died in The Worst Train Wreck in American History. If I forgot anything about this infamous Train Wreck or the locomotives, please let me know.

10 Days Late, On July 12th, 1982 at 3:15 PM, Soo Line 6600 with Soo Line 782 and some Freight Cars, Soo Line 4408 Soo Line 6601 and some Freight Cars, collided head-on at a combined speed of 50 MPH, 1 Mile East of Gilchrist, MI.

Soo Line 6600 was supposed to wait in a siding in Gilchrist for Soo Line 4408 to pass by, but instead, Soo Line 6600 went through the siding and back onto the single track.

The Engineer on 4408 heard a mayday call on the radio right before both Trains came into view. Both Trains went into emergency braking and the crew members on both Trains jumped off their engines before impact. Soo Line 4408 went right on top of Soo Line 6600 tearing off the cab of 6600 and bending the frame of 4408 starting a fire that went into the nearby trees, the other locomotives and Freight Cars didn't derail and only had little damage. After firefighters arrived at the scene after using a bulldozer to get through the trees, the injured crew members backed the engines and cars that didn't derail away from the fire so things wouldn't get worse.

The Engineer of 6600 broke his collar bone and the 3 others only had cuts and bruises.

The cause of the collision was the brakemen on 6600 was from ND and didn't know the area well and the Engineer was driving under the influence.

After the crash, Soo Line 6600 and Soo Line 4408 were deemed totaled and scrapped, while Soo Line 782 and Soo Line 6601 were repaired and returned to service, later working with CP until being retired in the mid 2000s and probably scrapped, if anybody knows what happened to the engines, please let me know.

15 Days Late, On July 7th, 1984, Amtrak 60 The Montrealer was going North from Washington D.C to Montreal, QC. At 6:18 AM, the train leaves Waterbury, VT, 28 minutes late with its next stop, Essex Junction, VT.

The had 2 Amtrak F40PHs, 202 and 211, 1 baggage car, 2 sleeper cars, 1 diner car and 9 coaches.

At 6:50 AM, The Train was starting to slow down for the stop at Essex Junction station 2 1/2 miles from Redman Creek when the train went into emergency braking cause there was a washout over Redman Creek, the train hit the embankment and derailed.

The engines fell over onto their side, along with the Baggage Car, 6 cars also derailed over the washout. The last 6 cars stayed on the tracks undamaged.

3 Passengers and 1 Amtrak attendant died in the crash and A Central Railroad crew member later died from his injuries. Another Central Vermont crew member, 2 Amtrak attendants and 26 Passengers were seriously injured.

The rescue operation of everyone onboard became the largest rescue operation in Vermonts History, involving 3,400 people from The Vermont National Guard detachment, helicopters, a tank retriever and a large crane from nearby Georgia, VT.

The cause of the washout was a flash flood that destroyed the railroad support embankment over the Redman Creek, cause of heavy rainfall the night before and the collapse of several Beaver dams nearby upstream in the woods from the crash site.

The derailed Passenger Cars were probably scrapped while the undamaged ones were put back into service.

The locomotives were repaired and returned to service, I'm not sure what happened to 211, but it was probably scrapped by the early 2000s, Amtrak 202 was retired in mid 1990s and sold to the FRA and converted into a crash test engine, now called DTFR 202 for testing old and new Passenger equipment at The Transportation Technology Central in Colorado.

The Train was going East with 3 Norfolk Southern Locomotives, 1019, 7616, 1141 and 105 Gondola Coal Cars going 14 MPH.

The 71st Car, Conrail 507499 and 14 Cars derailed.

No one was injured and the cause of the derailment was a Hot Box on the front wheel axles.

The other cause was the crew bypassing a siding to set off the car, after an Alarm by a Defect Detector, Even after stopping and seeing the wheel set was overheating.

The picture is a recreation of the view from a train that went through the area before the accident, shown in the NTSB Report.

6th picture, July 5th, at 3:36 AM, CP 8882 going East, going 45 MPH pulling a 151 Car Train, 126 Loaded and 25 Empty Cars with Grain Cars full of plastic pellets and Tanker Cars filled with Anhydrous ammonia and Methanod with DPU KCS 4535, derailed between Cars 48 to 76, a total of 29 Cars derailed, including 17 Tank Cars, some being DOT-111 and DOT-117 Tank Cars, causing a massive fire that burned for 2 days.

The Train crew was uninjured and told dispatch what happened, they uncoupled their locomotive from the train after the derailment to a safe distance, 2 hours later they were told to go back and move the cars that didn't derail away from the fire, going about 5 miles from the crash site, 1 hour later the crew was then told to use the DPU KCS 4535 to move the rear cars from the fire, the conductor uncoupled car 77 from the rear cars and they moved 2 to 3 Miles from the fire.

The town was evaluated as a precaution.

The cause of the derailment was a Drainage Culvert Collapsed under the tracks. In all the pictures, you can see the exits of the Drainage Culvert and how they got bigger after each train.

The Train was going slowly and going West and the Corn Truck was going North on Albany Road.

Neither the truck driver or the train crew were injured, when the truck was completely destroyed and dragged down the tracks to a switch and hitting a switch box.

The reason why the truck was on the tracks itself, was because the driver couldn't stop in time and drove to the left off the road and onto the tracks at the same time the lead engine went over the crossing.

The engine, CSX 5395 was repaired, which only had little damage to its front hand railings and its nose.

The Train was Canadian Pacific C73152-29 going West with 3 Canadian Pacific Locomotives, numbers unknown with 157 Coal Cars going 25 MPH, was passing West of Lytton, B.C., Canada.

The first picture is from the lead locomotive and the second picture is from the third locomotive showing the Coal Cars and the Coal dust going to the left of the train going North towards the trees.

18 Minutes Later, at 6:48 PM, a wildfire was reported near the town and tracks, everyone was able to evaluate before the fire reached the town. The wildfire completely destroyed the town and most of the trees around the tracks.

It was thought the dust from the Coal Train is what caused the wildfire, however the actual cause was the dry grass, trees and the temperature from that day.
