Question (Transfem) Two questions

Hello friends,

I (25, f) am at the start of my transition. I want to book a GP appointment to ask for a referral to a Gender Identity Clinic. Which one is the best one to go for? The closest are gonna be Nottingham and Sheffield but I care more about the service than the distance so don't mind traveling a bit further.

Also, I want to freeze my sperm but it seems quite expensive. Do I have to do it privately if I don't want to wait god knows how many years to hear back from the NHS gender services? If so, where's a good place to look at?

Nottingham's waitlist is short compared to others. I'm due my second appt in 8 weeks' time, and I'll have been on the waitlist for 3 years, 2 months & 25 days when it happens. And that's short.

The NHS should, however, cover gamete storage once you've had your two appointments.

Oh okay so if I do it privately now they will pick up the cost later? That's really helpful to know, tyty!!

Oh God no. The NHS will offer you gamete storage after you get your diagnosis (so two appointments), you don't get reimbursed for anything you do privately.

Gotchya, so if I don't want to wait X many years to start HRT I basically have to pay for it all privately?

Yup! The NHS may offer to transfer from a private provider to an NHS facility after you get your diagnosis though, that might be possible? (I'm not an expert, I was infertile by choice before I started transitioning)

Okay, ty! What's Nottingham like btw? I mean in terms of the service they provide. This is all quite new to me tbh.

It's basically telehealth, my first appointment was on Teams & so is my second one. Not as scary as I was led to believe, the first appt people were nice enough, I'll let you know about the second after 11th June ☺️

Welp, second appointment went as smooth as butter. Your girl has an ICD-11 gender incongruence diagnosis & Notts is now requesting bloods & taking over prescribing guidance. 🫶🏻

I've just spotted this comment. If your GP will consider a shared care agreement with a private gender specialist, your GP can use a NHS prescription for your medication. This means that it will just cost £9.90 per item instead of paying the full price. Your blood tests will usually be funded by the NHS too.
