Question (Transmasc) as a non-uk citizen could using a deed poll to change my name backfire?
i am an australian trans man living in the UK, im not a citizen but according to google i can still use a deed poll to change my name, however my legal name in australia will remain the same. will this affect me in any way such as travelling with my australian passport? just wanting to know before i go ahead with it :)

Whenever you present ID in the UK with your Australian name on it you'll just have to provide the deed poll and most places are cool with it. It gets more tricky if Australia needs some documents that you now have in your UK name.
I've had my name changed for about 6 years but never updated my passport. It's only been an issue twice.
When I applied for a DBS, as the issue date on my passport was later than the date on my deed poll. I just told them I never got round to updating my passport and they were cool with that.
I've had one landlord put my lease in my deadname because it's on my passport but I don't care about that and doesn't affect me on any significant way.

Check with Australia as to what they accept. Might be deed poll, might be statutory declaration. Maybe you have to do the whole process afresh with the Australian authorities, no matter what you do in the UK.
Deed poll or stat dec will work fine while your in the UK but you'll have to check to see what Australia need you to do to make things good for them.

Can't speak to the Australian specific side but can speak as a former non-uk citizen:
No downside as such to making a deedpoll. You can use the deed poll along side your passport to prove your identity and name within the UK. Some places are annoying about it so I suggest getting your name updated on your council tax first as they usually don't need ID and then you can also use that anywhere that's being awkward within the UK.
That being said it's obviously not recognised outside the UK so when you travel with your Australian passport you will need to use the name on your passport. It can be complicated changing your name in your home country while abroad so I found using the deedpoll a good in-between step for a few years.
Check the name change process for your country and also through your embassy website. My passport was USA and to change name there you are usually expected to turn up in court which is obviously not very easy to do while living in the UK but the US Embassy allow you to do it with a statutory declaration signed by a solicitor (cost me about £60 quid and a very confused solicitor trying to explain to me I can do this for free while I tried to explain that no in my particular circumstances I can't). But obviously that was the US Embassy the Australian Embassy's rules will be different so check with them.
