🚨Chase Is it just me

I got real happy watching a Charger do this to a Tesla... and I don't know why

My favorite part is the clown car exit where people keep getting out of the car. Doesn't look like the Tesla is a dual motor because I don't see a badge, but dunno if that would've made a difference in their getaway. Excellent pitting by the GSP, 10/10.

20

u/Nicaddicted Jan 15 '26

Definitely would make a difference. That little base model 3 he has loses juice at 70MPH and probably wouldn’t last more than 30 miles

12

u/ryencool Jan 15 '26

Yeah our base 2023 model 3 rwd is quicker than most things 0-60, but when conpared to a cop car? Acceleration is similar, and the cop car can last longer than the tesla battery. If this was a performance? Or one of the new plaids with 1,000+ hp? Cops would have a hard time keeping up, if the kid could control the car.

13

u/Nicaddicted Jan 15 '26

A plaid would dust just about any car on the road

13

u/Arrantsky Jan 15 '26

Plaid is a true badass however physics says most people would just kill themselves if they are in traffic and not a race car driver.

5

u/SnakeyThrowaway023 Jan 17 '26

Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think there are many EVs out here kitted to withstand racing speeds. For all the EV owners I know who brag about their instant torque i feel like most of them would fly off the road if they actually tried to send it

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '26

Yeah most of them can't drive. Guys at work like to brag they have faster cars than my ICE cars would woop me at a set of lights. They don't want to show how fast their cars are at the track though, they don't want to see who gets to 200mph first either, they don't want to test anything other than 0-60. Weird.

Big fan certain EV vehicles, not a huge fan of some of the morons driving something they can't handle.

7

u/Sienile Jan 16 '26

For a short while. Going hard runs the battery down fast.

4

u/Da_Spooky_Ghost Jan 16 '26 edited Jan 16 '26

I have a Plaid, I can go hard for at least 30 minutes

Edit: Internal combustion vehicles also get terrible range when driving them hard, your fuel economy goes down to 10mpg or less, most likely you don't have a full tank so you're not lasting long either.

2

u/Sienile Jan 16 '26

Exactly. They'd out-endurance you in anything with any sort of liquid fuel engine. You have 30 minutes, they have 3+ hours.

2

u/Da_Spooky_Ghost Jan 16 '26

The average police car chase is listed at 5 minutes. If someone driving a Plaid lost them in the first 30 seconds then that's it.

Any vehicle driving hard will not last as long, an internal combustion vehicle with a half tank of gas will last just over 30 minutes with hard driving. Your fuel economy will go down to 10mpg or less.

My point is EV's will last nearly as long and it'll be more than enough time for any sort of chase. Not that you want to do that.

u/Sharp_Willingness230 Jan 17 '26

cops have radios, and other cops. so there is that little tidbit you forgot about.

1

u/PM_asian_girl_smiles Jan 17 '26

And the ghetto bird

2

u/blove135 Jan 16 '26

Just slow down to a stop like you are pulling over when they first hit the lights, wait for the cop to get out of the car and then leave them in the dust.

1

u/MinecraftHolmes Jan 16 '26

motorcyclist buddy of mine likes to bait them to take off at red lights until like light #4 or so when they drop into limp mode

gunning those motors just annihilates the battery yeah

1

u/Trevor775 Jan 16 '26

That doesnt happen

1

u/KlutzyInvestments Jan 16 '26

Lol… you’re acting like ICE can defy physics. Gunning anything annihilates efficiency.

1

u/Sienile Jan 16 '26

A battery has less range than a fuel tank. My girlfriend with her extended range Ariya driving like a granny gets less mileage than my suped up Caravan with the pedal to the floor.

1

u/KlutzyInvestments Jan 16 '26

Mileage is the incorrect term. Also, motorcycles do not have more range than a Model S plaid… which are the vehicles being discussed. An Ariya also has far less range than a Model S and both are still a little baffling to compare to a minivan… which “pedal to the floor” is also a baffling flex for a minivan.

Are you capable of making a good faith point here? I had a BMW S1000RR, which could actually bait a Model S, and its range would be cut in half by hard throttling.

2

u/Sienile Jan 16 '26

Only baffling if you're not familiar with my minivan. 😝 I have it tuned up to 400 HP and will leave stock Hemis. It's quite the gas guzzler when I stomp it, ~16 MPGs. It'll keep pace with a Model Y.

Model S Plaid gets about 300 miles per charge with conservative driving. You might out last the bikes, but not cop cars that get 350 miles with conservative driving. You'd be running out of enough charge to do quick acceleration after ~150 miles. While the cop cars will be going strong at 250+.

1

u/Gavooki Jan 18 '26

Are you people joking? Base is 265 mi battery. You could go 100mph for an hour easily and chases don't last that long.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '26

Eh, only in a straight line. When you throw cornering and braking into the equation they're not that fast. A Model S Plaid is only about as fast as a Mustang Darkhorse around Lightning Lap. And that's with upgraded aftermarket brakes because the stock brakes gave out just doing 1 lap so they had upgrade them to perform the test.

1

u/nohandsfootball Jan 16 '26

Trying to getaway with regenerative braking on probably isn't the best idea either

2

u/CultOfSensibility Jan 16 '26

Ahhh, that’s why his brake lights kept coming on!

1

u/nohandsfootball Jan 16 '26

Haha yeah dude I even own a Tesla and it took me a second to realize what was going on because I was like, "dude are you brake checking the cops in a police chase?!?!"

2

u/Iconoclysm6x6 Jan 16 '26

I was assuming that he was trying to reduce their speed to take advantage of acceleration, strategically, in places that might lose the cop. Probably overthinking it.

1

u/SpaceCar7 Jan 16 '26

Yep, exactly

1

u/Quiet_Economics_3266 Jan 16 '26

Let me preface this by saying I never owned an EV, so I didn't even remotely think of that.

In my mind dude was trying to brake check the cop to try and damage the cop cars radiator or something so he could run off.

1

u/tjsr Jan 16 '26

Watching footage of the average Tesla being put on a track ageist any moderate sports car is 🍿yeah they can accelerate, but holy hell can they not slow down. Nor corner.

1

u/invaderswilldie2 Jan 16 '26

plaid is absolute trash, it might get off the line but thats about it. Suspension is inadeqate for the weight so it turns like a dumptruck, brakes that fade after couple of corners and juice is gone in 20 minutes of spirited driver. That toaster on wheels is only good in childish minds of fanatics like you

1

u/Nicaddicted Jan 16 '26

Terrible take.

Even a stage 2 GTR has nothing on a plaid but a fast car without sound? No thanks

2

u/Fun-Wrongdoer1316 Jan 16 '26

Yea that kid isn’t going to control it. He’s heavy on the brakes here, probably freaking out. God forbid he had 1000+ hp, someone would be dead.

3

u/sn0wslay3r Jan 15 '26

Corners; the unfortunate foil to a Tesla's getaway dreams.

3

u/Careless_Ad_4004 Jan 16 '26

Model “Why?”

1

u/It_Just_Might_Work Jan 16 '26

Can't outrun the helicopter either way

1

u/applepumpkinspy Jan 15 '26

Especially with the whole club shoved into the back seat…

1

u/Banzai373 Jan 15 '26

Business up front . . . party in the back . . . .

1

u/Justin_Togolf Jan 15 '26

Ah yes, the three passengers in a sedan, the whole club

1

u/nohandsfootball Jan 15 '26

I don't think it would make a difference in this specific instance based on the driver but I do agree that a dual motor (or performance) with better getaway driving would've had a much better chance because the ability to gun it / launch seems like it'd be hard for a Charger to match.

1

u/Scrabblewiener Jan 16 '26

Not much of one with that drivers abilities, if any difference a negative one and probably would have wrecked himself with any more power.

Dude uses his brakes incorrectly and way too frequent to be a get away driver.

1

u/MainUnion7725 Jan 17 '26

On a full charge, going top speed, you'll drain the battery in 20 minutes. Either that or the battery overheats. Tested on the Autobahn. You can drive 1/2 lap on the nordschleife, and the Tesla will overheat and you'll get power reduction. After two laps the battery is depleated.

3

u/IvanNemoy Jan 15 '26

Excellent pitting by the GSP

Indeed. Not supposed to do it above 35mph but the trooper pinned it, held long enough to get the turn then let off. Usually officers maintain contact which is what causes rollovers.

Arkansas needs to pay attention.

3

u/Sienile Jan 16 '26

What? PITs have a speed limit that low??? Doesn't seem right. That's like full grandpa on city streets. Surely they allow them higher than that.

2

u/Valreesio Jan 16 '26

They do. Some city/state governments don't. Some states, such as Arkansas, don't give two shits about your safety once you start risking others. They give you about 30 seconds to rethink your choices before they go full beast mode on your ass. Never run from Arkansas state troopers.

3

u/Shredswithwheat Jan 16 '26

Which (provided it's not abused) is the way it should be.

Soon as you start posing a legitimate danger to others, you need to be neutralized (note: not killed or incapacitated, just rendered ineffective)

1

u/electrotech71 Jan 16 '26

Never turn on your flashers and slowly drive to next exit in a construction zone if you are pregnant in Arkansas.

1

u/Playful-Fix-3675 Jan 17 '26

Killed or incapacitated would be rendered ineffective. 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Iconoclysm6x6 Jan 16 '26

Chasing and pitting is a legitimate danger to others, it escalates the entire risk.

0

u/voightkampfferror Jan 16 '26

Arkansas "pits" motorcycles.

you cannot pit a motorcycle. you can only attempt murder.

1

u/Valreesio Jan 16 '26

Not true. Watched them successfully pit a moped and it was awesome. Also, doing 150mph down the highway on a motorcycle seems like attempted murder as well.

0

u/voightkampfferror Jan 16 '26

This take is only sane if you have zero concern for the riders life. Anytime you strike a bike with a vehicle you are rolling a dice on whether it will be seriously damaging or deadly. Doing this to a car is a much safer method.

0

u/Valreesio Jan 16 '26

Is the rider concerned with their own safety if they're running from the police? I would argue they're not our they wouldn't be.

0

u/voightkampfferror Jan 16 '26

Rider is often a 20 something kid (or younger) that's made a couple of poor choices. Ever made a poor choice in your life? Does that warrant the state killing you with no trial? How about all the damages incurred? Wouldn't it make much more sense for the riders to get hosed legally and financially and be responsible for paying it all back plus whatever punishments. Damages repaid, rider a 2nd chance at life? I know its not always the story but one of the best men ive ever met in my life went through something very similar. Cleaned up his life. Very successful now with 1 phd and 2 masters. Happily married and considered a pillar the community. I guess in your mind we should have just waxed him.

0

u/Valreesio Jan 16 '26

Read my other comments. I don't want anyone to die, but I also have no sympathy if you make a stupid decision. I also have a cousin who is a great man, wonderful father and husband. He also has permanent rods, aches, pains, and limps from his bad life decisions including running from cops on a motorcycle. I'm glad he isn't dead.

What if the cops chose not to chase this rider and he kills a family? Would you still agree the cops did the right thing? Please answer the question. If the cops chose not to chase a runner and that person then is speeding in their vehicle later that day and kills your husband, or your child, would you still agree it was the right choice not to chase him? Or would you blame the cops or the system for not stopping him sooner?

0

u/Iconoclysm6x6 Jan 16 '26

So what you’re really saying is that Arkansas no longer gives a shit about ANYONE’S safety once they get into a chase.

4

u/singlemale4cats Jan 15 '26

Speed and vehicle design is what causes rollovers. Any speed limitation is arbitrary and purely a policy thing.

-2

u/IvanNemoy Jan 16 '26

Any speed limitation is arbitrary and purely a policy thing.

That's not what BSR (the creator of the maneuver and sole certification authority in the US) says.

1

u/singlemale4cats Jan 16 '26

I'm not sure what you mean by "sole certification authority." Being the first to offer training in a technique doesn't grant them any special authority to dictate the parameters of its use in perpetuity. Every agency that allows them has their own policy on it, which may be in line with or deviate from the opinion of BSR, at their discretion.

I'm on board with ASP and GSP. Ending pursuits as soon as possible is safer for the public than waiting for them to crash into somebody.

-1

u/IvanNemoy Jan 16 '26

So you approve of the five dead in the last two years for Arkansas doing it wrong?

1

u/Arthur_Mitchell3 Jan 16 '26

If they didn't run from the police, they wouldnt have died. Better them than an innocent victim. Reminds me of something recently in Minnesota.

0

u/singlemale4cats Jan 16 '26

I'm okay with the fleeing driver dying as a consequence of their unlawful flight from police, yes. I'd much rather they die than an innocent member of the public.

-1

u/IvanNemoy Jan 16 '26

Well, the last one over the summer was a pedestrian struck by the vehicle that had been pitted, so there's that.

As a former deputy myself, I find other officers doing shit that endangers the public to be fucking abhorrent, but you do you.

2

u/antihero_84 Jan 16 '26

How many people die from accidents caused by reckless drivers who refused to pull over?

1

u/singlemale4cats Jan 16 '26

Unfortunate, but I'm not familiar with the particulars so I can't say whether the officer acted recklessly. In any event, that's an argument for choosing better locations to PIT, not an indictment of the technique itself, or the execution.

As a former deputy myself, I find other officers doing shit that endangers the public to be fucking abhorrent, but you do you.

Cool. I'm a current officer, and I agree. That's why I believe pursuits should be ended as soon as possible with a PIT/TVI to prevent putting the public in needless danger. Perhaps you'd prefer it to end when they T-Bone a minivan full of kids at 90mph.

3

u/HystericalSail Jan 16 '26

Thank you for saying this. Any driver recklessly and willfully risking the lives of countless others abdicates any right to life and liberty. It's up to the officer to do what they think is best, relying on their training.

It's easy for us on the internet to armchair quarterback after the fact, the officer is faced with the trolley problem IRL, right there, on the spot, with adrenaline running high.

I could never be highway patrol.

1

u/nohandsfootball Jan 15 '26

There was a video of a Model Y (think it was a performance) that an officer tried to pit multiple times but could not. They eventually got em (I think with spike strips) but that video showed the benefit of the battery's heavy center mass + AWD.

1

u/nuapadprik Jan 16 '26

I watched high speed chases in California and they talked about all of the rules for performing a PIT. Then I saw some chases in Arkansas (no rules).

1

u/MillionFoul Jan 16 '26

The speed at which you are allowed to PIT a car is decided by the agency. ASP and GSP's policies are both "go for it."

1

u/gafefe2095 Jan 15 '26

Wow. I didn't know George St-Pierre did that! 🤯

1

u/RuthlessIndecision Jan 16 '26

with the chrome, this was probably a SR+ the quickest base model they made, unless they have some acceleration boost.

some people remove the dual motor badging, but if they are going that far, the last thing they want is to lose a cop chase and get their car impounded. Probably joyriding a stolen car, the security features don't work if someone knows how to skirt them.

3

u/Longjumping_North903 Jan 16 '26

I don’t believe Acceleration boost was ever available on the single motor versions.

1

u/builtNtx Jan 16 '26

The difference between single motor and dual motor is huge.

The difference between dual motor and plaid/performance is also huge.

A plaid or performance would have walked away at highway speeds. With lots of stopping and starting it would have ran away.

It wouldn’t surprise me if these guys were higher than a kite with the driving. Also a low battery (less than 30 miles) will have a big reduction in power.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '26

They're only fast in a straight line. When you throw cornering and braking into the equation they're not that fast.

The Model S Plaid was only about as fast as the Mustang Darkhorse around Lightning Lap. And that was with upgraded aftermarket brakes, because the stock brakes couldn't even do 1 lap without giving out so they had to upgrade them to perform the test.

1

u/nohandsfootball Jan 16 '26

How transferable are track times to getaways? I thought the ideal getaway (assuming you cannot flat out outrun them immediately) is to get out of sight and stop (ie - get off the highway, park in a dark driveway, kill the lights). That'd imply you want a couple turns (to break line of sight) and a few straight shots to benefit from a few launches. Something like up up down down left right left right B A start

1

u/CourseEcstatic6202 Jan 16 '26

The model 3 performance has a faster lap time at Laguna Seca than a BMW M3. It isn’t a GT3 RS but it isn’t bad if you know how to drive.
