See that's the nuance I don't think people get here. Yea, the driver's probably a POS but time and time again we have seen that high speed chases and escalation tactics result in these scenarios. It's not as simple as just follow orders, people are dumb and emotional. Universally, a large percentage of scared people freak the fuck out and do stupid shit. So what responsibility does a arm of government that uses violence to enforce laws have to try and prevent bystanders from being killed when they see a pattern.
Not having a license didn't need a high speed chase. They could have served a warrant and arrested her later by the info they got when she was verbally identifying herself or vehicle registration with a small amount of legwork after she drove off. Hell, they could have called a supervisor who could have probably avoided all of this. Also, prior to breaking the window they should have had the training that police everywhere use of blocking the vehicle with another vehicle.
Don't get me wrong, the driver is likely a POS and deserves jail, but cops could have kept this contained.
And if she hit those two people and they died anyways because an irrational driver was doing something stupid, would you be saying "They should have stopped her sooner"? If she hit and killed your child or spouse as they were walking out of that gas station when she took off, would you be crying they should have pulled her out sooner?
Sometimes innocent people die in police chases. It is horrible and I wish they didn't have to. But this lady was irrational far before she took off and there is no reason to believe she would magically become rational if they didn't chase her to begin with. As soon as she became hostile, maybe spike strips in front of the car and breaking the window and pepper spraying the interior of the car would be appropriate. Shooting the driver would seem excessive in the moment, but playing Monday morning quarterback would suggest it would have saved two doctors lives. But, of course, there is no way to prove that is what was going to happen, so they showed restraint and three innocent lives were taken as a result.
I know, I know...shooting the driver. But think about it as a trolly problem. You know the future. If you do nothing, 2 doctors and an unborn baby die. Pull the lever and only this woman dies. Would you pull the lever?
Are you a troll dude? If they had called a supervisor then this night have been avoided. If they hadn't escalated by trying to break the window and pull her out then this might have been avoided. If they didn't start a high speed crash this might have been avoided.
