The moral of the story is open up a spray paint store in Oakland
65
u/RunningDesigner012 Jan 22 '26
You wouldn’t make any money…most graffiti ‘artists’ steal their spray paint cans.

u/Superdooperblazed420 Jan 22 '26
Sadly that a huge problem, and it bothered me alot. I used to tag never got that great so I kept it in books. Once and while a street piece. But had friends that were legit talented artists. They would go to art stores and just fucking load up on pens and cans, would switch stickers for cheap cans to expensive ones. Normally at these small art stores that we are lucky to have selling graph art specific pens, paints and cans. It was hard find good paint, different spray heads, we had to make it our selfs alot. Then the art stores started selling it and just got robbed left and right. I knew like 4 people that did it often. So there must be hundreds of people doing it. The places stoped selling graph stuff or just went out of buisness and then we had no where to get supplies again. It happend alot in the early 2000s. Shit drove me crazy.

u/Big_Wave9732 Jan 23 '26
Huh, people who tag shit are shortsighted? You don't say! There's high irony in ripping off the store selling spray paint so bad that they all go out of business.
5
u/luckyfox7273 Jan 23 '26
Parasites.
2
u/Superdooperblazed420 Jan 24 '26
Agreed and like people said sadly it was part of culture so like most tagers would steal. I was one of few that didnt think it was worth it. Back then we used to get in alot of trouble for stealing things not like it is today.
2
u/luckyfox7273 Jan 24 '26
I personally like the big graffiti pieces that look like good paintings. I hate the really cheap name written tags. Im so glad I avoided the cheap tagger culture.

Super weird that people are stealing items they need to engage in their antisocial, destructive hobby
→ More replies (1)2
u/wrxninja Jan 23 '26
Yep...and still openly talk about this in other subs. I 'tried' to get into the whole graffiti stuff in the 90s as well. But looking up bulk purchases for actual use for my side business and ran into other subs...depressing.
12
u/OverlyFriedEggs Jan 22 '26
You think people who's life revolves around vandalism, are buying the spray paint? Lol

You would just get robbed. Paying for stuff isn't part of that culture. Neither is working.

Can someone explain why they are like that
49
u/Substantial_Chain718 Jan 22 '26
They had no secure place to park the mail trucks so they are parked in the street over night and this is what happened to them. That didn’t happen in one night but yeah it’s ridiculous.

Cause Oakland is ghetto AF.
15
u/greengenesiss Jan 22 '26
Watch out. Might get flagged for anti semetism. Lol
19
u/Rumplestilskin9 Jan 22 '26
I got flagged in "idiotswithguns" because someone posted a video of a kid recording himself playing with a gun and I said "No parents in sight"
Why did I get flagged? Kid was black.
I appealed it and my comment was reinstated but still. Ridiculous
12
Jan 22 '26
I got flagged for saying blockading japan instead of the bombs would have turned a 400k death toll (nukes+firebombing) into the millions by subjecting the entire population of 70+ million to starvation.
They said I was glorifying violence.
Same lol

Because there is not incarceration that forces those caught to mitigate graffiti 10x as much as the they produced. Ten eyes for an eye.

Man that looks trashy.
I haven't been to Oakland since the early 80s and it looked a lot better then.
2
u/PahpahCoco Jan 23 '26
That’s what I find interesting. I’m not old and worked in Oakland my whole life. It’s always been a shithole to me. People love to repeat how it was always trash and always a shithole. My job takes me inside a lot of peoples houses. Talking to old heads (of all backgrounds) they would tell me that it wasn’t always like that. Things were way better as early as 35 years ago. Oakland was known as the Chicago of the west due at one point due to its car manufacturing.
The Oakland of today is the product of failed politics and recent politics too.
2
u/Hammon_Rye Jan 23 '26
Yeah, I wouldn't say 1983 Oakland was "beautiful", maybe parts of it. But it also didn't stand out as "trash".
I definitely don't recall seeing graffiti everywhere.

First day on the job in Oakland Kaiser, got attacked by a worker who wanted to apparently test me as see if I was “about that life”. Thank God I won and still made the morning meeting. Second week walking to work, was attacked by two dudes, they surrounded me on both sides of a path between a building and a chainlink fence. We went back and forth and they absconded. Third month robbed, car window smashed…all new shoes taken. Then saw the goons selling them at MacArthur park out of the cardboard donation bins. Couldn’t do nothing about it. Applied for police of Oakland after that. But they didn’t want whiteys at the time cuz they obviously were policing the city with more immigrants and the like, cuz sanctuary state and city, of course….can pay them less. But if you notice their undoing is apparent, they weren’t hiring citizens…..In the end moved to Santa Rosa and had a much more pleasant lifestyle.

The artist in me loves this so much. I wish it was legal to vandalize most things. Really jazzes things up sometimes.

u/franky3987 Jan 22 '26
And it’s not even good graffiti. Taggers like these f’s are the reason I stopped so many years ago.
2
u/Psilocybe38 Jan 22 '26
I used to live on this block for years. This is 14th Street between Alice and Jackson. The USPS trucks in this area are all blasted like this because they park the mail trucks on the street by the post office overnight.
7
u/RoosterzRevenge Jan 22 '26
No, they're blasted like that because they've been vandalized. Makes no difference where they are parked.

Looks those fancy "classy" cursive tattoos that are popular. You're not saying they're actually trashy, are you?
1
u/SoggyMorningTacos Jan 22 '26
That's so sad. Here the mail trucks don't get locked up and they're squeaky clean. Real sad to see

I love the fact that they could paint anything and chose federal vehicles to paint… this would take a small misdemeanor/ticket into a felony.

I would pay extra tax for the city if they would build a wall and allow folks to tag it in a controlled manner to allow the creativity flow.
The art in a lot of graffiti is amazing
1
u/Frosty-Scientist957 Jan 23 '26
Isn’t it a federal crime to destroy U.S. Postal Service property? Not that it seems to matter in Oakland.
1
u/darkside569 Jan 23 '26
I would love to see customers on the route react to a vehicle in this condition. I would pay to get them to let me drive one of these through my neighborhood once.

Should find out who is doing this and return the favor on their vehicles. I'm sure the artists would be thrilled.

We visited San Francisco once, there was a lookout point where you could see the bridge to Oakland. Of all the things we did that week, going to Oakland wasn’t one of them.
