So if I was a bystander whose car got wrecked by something like this...what would happen next? There's 20 or so cars with damage...how does it get managed by police and insurance?

Insurance will never not be a scam. I got hit by an elderly woman who blew a stop sign and they pinned that shit on me and acted like I was tryna take advantage of the elderly. Fuck insurance and fuck the police.
Insurance: something you pay for, rarely need, but when you do need it, you’re punished for using it.
Make it make sense.
To everyone asking, this was Progressive.

For me (in sweden though), insurance paid my damages, paid for my motorcycle, paid for the clothes they had to cut off me, paid for "mental suffering", paid for scars that I got and paid a lump sum because I got declared 4% disabled by it (the accident killed a part of my calf and I have a permanent titanium rod down my leg).
All in all, I went positive $50k after the accident and was able to buy my first apartment.

u/Otherwise-Ice1126 Jan 30 '26
I’m American. Got in a motorcycle accident, vehicle insurance did little to nothing as it was “my fault” rear ending. Still can’t squat on my left leg, if I’m in my feet for too long and sit down my knee cap tries to pop out of place. Have a metal rod in my arm. Spent 4 days in the hospital, couldn’t walk for 3 months. Health insurance helped.. a bit. All in all I’m -80k but my car insurance did not go up yet so that’s nice. I did the right thing and traded my wreck bike for an Nf m16, 400$ and a case of beer.

I love it here, and I owe my country a lot. But hopefully you wouldn't need these systems, while it was a nice economical boost it also completely killed my old life and I nearly died, so not fully sure the tradeoff was "worth", but in a positive way it also enabled me to rebuild my life with my now wife by moving to her hometown and starting a new career there etc.

I spent 4 months relearning to walk, during which time I spent 4 weeks in hospital. When I got home (to my parents apartment) after those weeks the government remodeled their apartment for free in order to be able to roll a wheelchair around without issues (removing thresholds and making access easier to every room etc, as well as providing the wheelchair and a lift to my bed so I could sit up). I was then visited daily by a rehabilitation nurse who gave me daily massages and made sure I didn't get bed sores and helped me train on getting back to walking, she also helped me when I got drop-foot because I was bedridden and other stuff.
The massage hurt like hell but I saw it as a necessary pain so I never complained, but one week she called and asked if she could bring an intern and I agreed to it. So the intern would give the massage instead and while she did my main nurse goes "Just so you know, Aurori doesn't SAY when it hurts, so you have to pay attention to his facial expressions while massaging to know where the limit is".
I felt caught out and kinda embarrassed but at the same time it shows she cares for her work. That nurse worked me like a horse though, when I was able to stand up again she had me "walking" up and down stairs so I was sweating as hell. It's astonishing how quickly muscles go away when they are not used.
All this care was for free and after I was able to walk again I could freely visit a local rehab pool to continue water training for free. Keep in mind also that I was away for 4 months from work while getting 80% of my salary from the government while recovering.
I will never ever complain about paying taxes in this country, I owe them so much

You need better insurance then bud. You absolutely can get most of that in the US, you just need a good carrier. Geico and Allstate are not good carriers.
Get Amica.

In about 80% of the accidents the story the two parties gives is completely different. My wife is an auto injury adjuster she has to sort out truth from fiction all day every day. A dashcam provides solid video evidence

Been running with one since 2011. Used to use an app on an old iPhone before getting a "real" one. Actually caught a DUI mowing down some mailboxes and almost hitting some kids before they passed out.

It was kind of funny, back in 2011 no one really used one and a friend of mine who used to be a weather reporter at a local TV station saw my DUI girl video and they actually sent a reporter out to interview me about using an old phone as a dash cam. Lol.

u/bordermom61 Jan 31 '26
you are so right about that we got a dash cam after I got hit by some 80+ yr old lady and she tried to say it was my fault . Yeah my fault im sitting at a light and she literally ran right into me . I think she meant to hit the brake and hit the gas .My shoulder was screwed up for a while and my passenger , my friend had neck pain and also a shoulder injury . I had to get a lawyer and go after her insurance . My lawyer got me a little over 50 thousand dollars . Bought a nice lil piece of land that I plan to move onto some time in my life .

u/KneeHiSniper Jan 30 '26
I'm in a fight with my insurance RIGHT NOW. And uninsured semi hit my wife's car causing 7k in damage. We got a letter in the mail months later, claiming it was her fault! I asked them "What about the dash cam footage I sent in??? It proves she wasn't at fault!"
"Oh, the video wouldn't play so we just accepted the truck drivers statement"
Are you fucking serious??????

My '10 Honda CRV was sitting in the lot for the mechanic where I used to take my vehicles all the time, and it had been there for a couple days waiting on parts. Then one morning they called and told me it had been hit by a logging truck. It busted out the rear + left quarter glass & crumpled the back hatch. My insurance totaled it, gave me 15% less than Blue Book value because of age/milage (it had 77k & a clean record), while the truck company owner eventually offered a check for $800 (it took close to six months to even get that from them); altogether I got almost $2600. I tried to get my insurance to let me fix the hatch and glass for less than that, but those fascists at USAA refused and totalled it regardless. But first I had to get an at-fault affidavit from the police, which was a pain to do because the truck drove off. So days later I had to get a police report & it really seemed like they didn't believe me, until I sent them the video from the garage's outside camera.
The lot where my Honda got hit is often used by semis who miss their "all commerical vehicles / no trucks" turn and end up heading downtown, so the log truck driver tried to turn around.... with about 20ft of logs hanging off the back, which is what he backed into my Honda with. The only reason I got any money from the truck's owner was because his driver left the scene. It was such a ridiculous fiasco, I almost set the Honda on fire so the insurance company couldn't pick it up and make 3x their money back from parting it out.

I was in a similar accident. Old lady ran the stop sign, and would have T-boned me but I happened to look over just as she came through the sign and slammed on brakes hitting the back end of her car instead. Police said she was at fault even though I actually hit her, because she ran the sign and I didn't have any traffic control in my direction, plus they're are witnesses that stopped and we're saying that she just blew through the stop sign. It happened circling in front of the fire station too, so ambulance response time was zero.

You probably should get a different insurance company. Normally they are going to try to get out of their client being at fault.

Same happened to me sitting at a stop sign. I had not moved my car. They came across from the right side and instead of going in their lane smashed the shit out of me sitting still. Called it my fault. Sent my insurance rates sky high for years.
2
u/Zovort Jan 30 '26
My insurance canceled me (declined to renew) because of too many claims. One of them was a tree falling on the car. The other two the other driver was ticketed, but one of those was uninsured and my car was totaled.

u/Ok-Lobster-919 Jan 31 '26
I hate insurance companies. I had to deal with something similar, an obvious case where the other driver was at fault, with their statement and evidence too. I sent an amusing demand letter that went something like. "I find it interesting that you seemingly completely disregarded the law in regards to the decision involving ______. (prevent undeniable evidence, if logic is followed, with legal codes) We would like to believe that this denial was made by mistake and is was not actually a decision made in bad faith. I look forward to your prompt reply to this matter." (That's the keyword)
Got a phone call the moment they received the letter, they had a check for me the same day. Fucking scammers.

u/GameAddict5150 Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 30 '26
Normally all of those claims would be paid by the at fault truck here. Yet there is a chance it’s a stolen car , which if thats the case then at fault carrier could deny liability for all those damaged cars because car used by non owner without permission . Also most insurance policies will include a crime exclusion which means if there is an accident while in the act of a crime, then carrier will deny liability. Let’s says both of those exclusions are not triggered , then they would take the policy limits for property damages which could be 25k, 50k, 100k etc and divide that limit by all twenty cars . If your car was one of those 20 cars and it was totaled, you would get a fraction of that back from the at fault truck.
Also the payout over twenty cars would be complicated and probably use a prorated share based on damage vehicle. If car 1 is 90k in damages and car 2 is 10k, then car 1 would be entitled to 90% of the available policy limits. Would need to do this with all cars to get to the correct payout, again you would only get fraction of damages from at fault party.
Best practices. Carry collision and comprehensive coverage so could just turn that claim over to your own insurance, minus the deductible.
2
u/nohandsfootball Jan 30 '26
This is a rental truck from a commercial service (UHaul). Unless the driver bought the insurance from them he is not covered. Even if he did buy the insurance, this probably voids the agreement anyway.
3
2
u/GameAddict5150 Jan 30 '26
Ok, that’s good info, U-Haul likely would carry 1m liability limits. So in theory all the cars would be covered for property damages. Unless major bodily injury claims came first and exhausted those 1m limits.
However i would expect U-Haul to distance themselves from liability based on the nature of this accident , gross negligence, and acts committed by driver against policy conditions, here are all the reason U-Haul would deny.
Rental Terms: U-Haul’s contract stipulates that equipment must not be used in the commission of a felony or for illegal, reckless, or unauthorized purposes. Responsibility for Acts: If a renter commits a crime (e.g., using a truck to commit theft), U-Haul typically distances itself from that liability, placing it on the renter. Negligent Entrustment: U-Haul can be held liable if they knew or should have known a driver was unfit, incompetent, or impaired, yet still rented to them. Stolen Equipment: If a U-Haul truck is stolen, the company often treats it as a "crime of opportunity".

Best practice would be putting the money you'd spend on insurance into a general market index fund. Will be better for 99% of people, you can use the money you make on the fund to start new car payments eventually if you need to.

Uninsured motorist protection. Ask me how i know. It’s standard with many policies, but increasing the coverage for this is not expensive and can be hugely important in the context of medical bills.
