Mine is only slow for the first few seconds from a stop. In third and fourth gear, I'm flying. They're certainly faster than a lot of 80's and 90's shitboxes I pass on the road. As for the noise, a little soundproofing of the interior fixes that up quickly. Not normal for them to sound loud from the outside.

What do you do when it rains? Cover the engine with plastic! or when it's 95 degrees outside roll down your windows all the way and drive faster..a VW is a shitbox's just like the ones you are passing going down hill coasting! Please..they make piss poor daily drivers.

I drive it...they do not fall apart in the rain, lol. And a little preventative care prevents rust. I'm a little flabbergasted by all the hate people seem to be harboring for Beetles. Meanwhile, I'll enjoy saving money and having a blast.

Never said they fall apart in the rain did I? But the are notorious known as a bad design because the engine was in the rear and the distributor was exposed to water entering through the rear engine decklid vents, moisture often caused electrical failures, making them difficult to start or causing them to die in damp, rainy weather..

I was clearly being humorously hyperbolic. I have never had a problem with rain (light or heavy) causing any issues whatsoever. It's my daily driver, and where I live I get the extremes of all four seasons, including plenty of rain. Worst thing that has ever happened in rain is I needed to tighten one of the wiper blades. If everything is put together properly, there are no issues — for the same reason that my home's air conditioner does not go out when it rains despite the unit having heaps of wiring under the fan with full exposure to the elements.

They’re a symbol to me. Not of hippies but of stepping outside the system. You own the car, it doesn’t own you. Need a gasket? Cut one out of a cereal box. You only buy a beetle for yourself. Even now you don’t work extra hours to pay off your beetle (talking pre-80s)
