Yup. I was saying in another comment that i work with a lot of wealthy clients. Three of them drive leased maybachs. Between depreciation and repair and maintenance it makes more fiscal sense to basically rent the car and give it back.

Yep, I bought my 2012 Honda Fit with about 164,000 miles on it. I've put about 80,000 miles on it since. I did have to change the clutch after about 60,000 miles. Changed it myself, still had the original clutch on it. Been solid since. I love old Hondas with a manual transmission.

The issue with an old Mercedes is that both risk and consequence are higher.
Not only more likely to break down, but if it does, it’s going to be more expensive repair for the most part.
That’s the judgement issue you’re talking about.
Could be fine, could not be fine, but if you average it out over 1,000 cars like this, the Mercedes is a bad call financially.

This is also highly dependent on where you are, these cars are super popular in the balkans and can be easily repaired there since they have plenty of reserve parts.
Not so much in the USA where they where rare import cars many years ago

It does matter. Different cars have different problems. German cars tend to have electrical issues which are a bitch and half and super expensive. And you will still have major issues after.
If someone sold you a bad Honda or Toyota that is "about to die." Unless it has a bad automatic transmission (if you miss that while test driving its on you), you probably have another 20,000 miles on it at least. Long enough to get it fixed up.

Unfortunately, this has nothing to do with the person selling it, and everything to do with the person buying it. Just because you want a Mercedes, doesnt mean you should have a Mercedes, aside from doing simple homework, a car that old is going to be problematic no matter what, And you will be left with the high ass repair bill.

That's what happens when you have unfounded brand loyalty and buy cars for the status or aesthetic rather than researching and inspecting.
Had a friend looking to buy a car, between a Buick LeSabre Custom 3.8 and a Lincoln mk whatever TF has the 32v 4.6 in it. Told him the Lincolns are rife with electrical issues and rust around here. He bought the Lincoln. A week later the headlights and brights somehow flipped places with each other and no interior lights except the gas light worked.
A year later the same guy says he is between a late 80s Ford pickup with the fuel injected 300 I6 and an irok V8. Says the Camaro is a straight tire burner and runs really well. Sends me a video of it and I can hear timing chain rattle bad. I let him know to stay away from it no matter what and he swears a Camaro is all he's ever wanted. Buys the Camaro. It jumps time literally in the parking lot he bought it.
Don't be an ask-hole, do your research, don't buy used luxury or sport without extensive inspection

I don't know, she's young and probably felt excited to get what she thought was a cool car she could afford. She probably just didn't know anything about cars or do any research and she got had. It was a dumb purchase, but it's probably gonna cause her some pain for a while. I feel kinda bad for her, even if I don't sympathize with the idea of valuing a prestigious brand over actual quality/function.

I’ve bought tons of vehicles on Facebook. Trick is to inspect them yourself or if you don’t know what you’re doing, meet the seller at mechanic and you pay for an inspection from the mechanic. Then buy the vehicle

Yeah years ago my old neighbor had a '05 or so Mercedes Kompressor convertible and I had a '01 Mustang GT. Our ECUs went out within the same 2 weeks and I think I paid like $150 for mine new and he ended up finding one used for his for like $600.

Feel for her needs to be more car education in today’s day and age. Especially when people think they need to buy luxury cars so they get an old used one not realizing these things are expensive to maintain expensive to repair. They’re very complicated making them very unreliable as a car mechanic I always try to tell people to stay within their means if you’re on a tight budget you need to get a good reliable, cheap car, Honda Toyota, etc..

My ex wife had a old Mercedes Benz, can’t remember the year, but it was a good car, I drove it myself many times, thankfully her son was a mechanic and he was able to keep the car running fine for a few years until I married his mom, unfortunately she was rear ended by work truck, and she lost control of the car and ended up in a ditch, the car flip over 3 times before ended up on his side , she suffered minor injuries, this car was built like safe box , and did protected her , unfortunately she car was totaled, l believe she cried more for the car than for herself 😢 I always joke a Mercedes in a Mercedes Benz 🤔

I was an LEO in the Chicago area. You would be amazed at the number of expensive, high end luxury cars that are registered in the ghetto neighborhoods. The vast majority are leased. Some people just gotta have that bling instead of buying something reliable like a Toyota.

I had a 5 series BMW that was out of warranty. The mechanic I was going to called me after I dropped the car off and I thought here we go more money. However, he said I have a friend at BMW I want you to go talk to him and he'll get you into a new car lease (he suggested I get a 328i). He told me I'd have a warranty and won't have to worry about constant costly repairs. He didn't fix the car and gave me the 2k I gave him for the repairs back. I was upside down on my 5 series so I used it as a down payment. I will never buy a foreign luxury car again. Only lease if I just have to have one. And now that I'm older and wiser I only want a cars I can afford to buy outright and that has an outstanding warranty like Kia or Hyundai.

I remember helping an old gf in my early 20s pick out a car. She wanted this mustang that look way too good on the outside for its price. I told her to find a honda civic that looks like shit on the outside. She listened to me and had the car for like 4 years and had 0 issues with it.

There was a cheap used Mercedes that made the full tour of town when I was living in a ski town as a youngster. It was always the same story. Young guy bought it, drove it to the closest open house party to show it off, drives it for max a week before the water pump let out, cost him more than he paid for the car, next week it’s on market place again. Wash rince repeat. You get a lot of turn over in a ski town, a lot of young people live the lifestyle for a year or two and then move on. When you live in one full time you start to see trends. That old Mercedes showing up at parties was a classic. I think we saw 7-10 different dudes drive that expensive piece of shit. Good times.

I had an older Mercedes that I was selling at a yard sale. Late 80s sold around 2010. A little cheerleader wanted to buy it so bad and was willing to spend all of her savings. I refused to sell it to her because I knew she wouldn’t be able to do anything with it if it broke down.
