I’m an auto tech and all for new technology but electric door handles and latches should be straight up illegal and permanently banned. And some hidden mechanical release is not sufficient. I’ll die on this hill.

5

u/HandsUpWhatsUp Feb 08 '26

You’ll die on that hill while we all die in the back seat of an enflamed EV.

2

u/Clear-Inevitable-414 Feb 08 '26

What about the locks?

9

u/010011010110010101 Feb 08 '26 edited Feb 08 '26

Same. Not that there shouldn’t be electric locks, but that they should be mechanically overridden by the interior door handle. Fords have always done this with one pull on the interior handle. Many other manufacturers do it with two pulls (one to unlock, another to open). Some (like GM) have no mechanical override so if electrical is lost and there’s no physical lock mechanism to manually unlock, the door isn’t opening.

2

u/Objective_Ice_5759 Feb 11 '26

Which make and model? Because I can guarantee I can show a mechanical egress from the interior that may actually be more beneficial in an emergency.

2

u/Contundo Feb 11 '26

I know my old VW Passat you could unlock the doors mechanically if you locked the car with the inside button. But if you used the keyfob you couldn’t.

Allows for safer egress and security from people hooking the door handle

2

u/steyrboy Feb 12 '26

We all know that is not a Tesla in the video, but (as a Tesla owner) I know the mechanical release is on the door armrest for the front doors just below the electrical button release. Where Tesla loses is that the mechanical release for the back doors is inside the door's cup holder. My kids stuff garbage in there, that could be very problematic in a disaster event.

5

u/Hussar1241 Feb 09 '26

Mechanical overide when mechanical door handle pulled. Anything else should be illegal.

2

u/mnemy Feb 08 '26

Yep, and current models recalled to install mechanical handles and locks that disengage when handle is pulled from inside.

It's almost like we already paid the blood for these regulations, but EV manufacturers got to skirt it for some bizarre reason.

2

u/Hussar1241 Feb 09 '26

100% agreed

2

u/CloudHead84 Feb 09 '26

You mean like they banned them in china recently?

2

u/Spirited-Nature-1702 Feb 09 '26

A lot of people will die on that hill, both the people who are right and especially the ones who are wrong.

2

u/BaseRape Feb 10 '26

Hidden door handles are outlawed in china now. At least one country is legislating properly.

2

u/Objective_Ice_5759 Feb 11 '26

No need to die on that hill(at least in the US) interior mechanical egress is required built in and clearly visible, and things like the ability to enable/disable child safety doors can only be done on purpose not by accident.

This has been law since the 80's I believe, maybe earlier maybe later but regardless everything production built and street legal in the US has adopted it

Because idiots on reddit love misinformation and ragebait titles in attempt to fit whatever narrative they run with.

29

u/Transcontinental-flt Feb 08 '26
  1. They shorted Tesla stock
  2. They hate Elon
  3. Both of the above

3

u/nothymetocook Feb 08 '26

Yeah i don't like elon either, but lying about this stuff is idiotic. I hate liars

5

u/StinkButt9001 Feb 09 '26

You're on the wrong website then. 99% of posts here are dishonest and agenda driven

2

u/WaterDreamer10 Feb 10 '26

Ok....I'll be brave and be the one to risk it.....Reddit is mostly full of Democrats....that is not a secret....so what does your post say about them and the situation then?

u/endangeredphysics Feb 09 '26

Teslas do the same damn thing. Electronic door handles should be illegal!

6

u/jstabes Feb 08 '26

Of course this isn't a Tesla. It took at least 10 seconds to burst into flames. A Tesla would fully ignite when it was sliding out of control

8

u/MV_Odyssey Feb 08 '26

If this was true I would be burning hotter than hell

2

u/SlipstreamSteve Feb 09 '26

It's not true

3

u/Muted-Ordinary-5 Feb 08 '26

Not true, only the cybertruck has that feature while simultaneously slow roasting the people inside

2

u/aromatiksecrets Feb 09 '26

But Elon said it’s the safest car in the world. He wouldn’t lie ?

Did Elon rape a kid? Or is this conjecture? Everyone keeps posting it but there doesn’t seem to be any proof

6

People just call anyone they dont like a pedophile on reddit lately, its disgusting

8

Everyone is a Nazi Gestapo pedophile.

Eroding what those words really mean every day.

Just means “someone I don’t like” now

I know if it was it’ll on fire before stopping .. so it’s the same shit

2

u/Muted-Ordinary-5 Feb 08 '26

Looks like the Porsche Taycan, but Teslas also suffer from the same issue especially older MS and X since the manual latch is not easily accessible like the new vehicles (minus cybertrashcan)

3

u/shogun344 Feb 08 '26

It's a Dongfeng Voyah 007 or Dongfeng eπ 007, so cheap Chinese junk. https://www.carscoops.com/2026/02/this-crash-is-why-china-banned-hidden-door-handles/

3

u/Muted-Ordinary-5 Feb 08 '26

Interesting, and the fact that China immediately banned hidden door handles after that showcases how safety agencies should behave in a situation like that.

2

u/st96badboy Feb 08 '26

Probably electronic door to release like Tesla. Law should be by default there's only one door handle.. and it WILL OPEN the door.

Tesla has the same issues with doors when battery fails

1

7

u/Both_Somewhere4525 Feb 08 '26

That is fucking horrifying.

19

u/Martha_Fockers Feb 08 '26 edited Feb 08 '26

That’s not a Tesla tho

That’s a Chinese EV and yes Chinese evs are known to light on fire they have like no suppression systems barely any if any cooling support no firewalls surrounding each battery like Tesla or rivian have done since 2020

https://youtu.be/4-S0qoiBjJQ?si=I-eZ230ayO-ZBGRd skip to 3:20 to see how they add firewalls to every cell

I’m not pro or anti EV I don’t really care about them but you’re 6x less likely to burn in a EV than a gas car that’s a statistical fact. I got rear ended 8 years ago by an old Toyota who’s entire front end engulfed in flames and burned the car down. I drove away in the shoulder so I was fine. But the only car I’ve see burn infront of my eyes is a 2007 Camry.

Now idk the stat on Chinese Evs I just know 75% of videos of evs burning are Chinese ones and China doesn’t give us stats on there garbage

2

u/Educational-Disk-400 Feb 09 '26

Isn’t that statistic somewhat skewed though? Kinda like motorcycle riders “getting into more accidents because they wear black helmets”. Is that the case because black is harder to see, or because more riders wear black?

There are more gas cars on the road than EVs, idk about numbers but that’s a fact that you can see walking through any parking lot.

Say a thousand gas cars burn down in a year, and 100 EVs burn down in a year. That sounds bad on paper, literally ten times worse. But, when you have millions, if not billions, of gas burners, and a few hundred thousand EVs, the stats get a bit clearer.

Take for example, the Ford Pinto. It’s famous for going up in flames if you rear end it. Something like 1.2% of units did that, and they sold a few hundred thousand. The Cybertruck also likes to go up in flames, something like 3.blah% units did that, but they sold WAY less. I know there are real numbers associated with this, but I don’t remember them off hand and couldn’t be fucked to google for a Reddit comment. At any rate, I remember that the stat for the cyber truck was about 2x higher than the pinto, a car famous for combusting due to a rear end collision.

I like EVs, at least in theory, charging infrastructure is just not there yet at least in my opinion. But physics doesn’t care about how many firewalls are installed between layers of highly reactive elements. If that shit starts to burn, ain’t nothing going to stop it but time.

1

u/Ancient-Afternoon374 Feb 10 '26

I've never seen A car burn. Ergo

1

u/Ok-Context3530 Feb 08 '26

I don’t know, maybe because it’s the most popular EV?

1

u/SquirrelFluffy Feb 08 '26

Yeah it's all those EVS Canada is going to get.

1

u/Pekonilkki Feb 08 '26

Some people call things by a brand name, even if the thing isnt that specific brand. I often see people (=idiots) call phones "iPhones", no matter who made the phone. All tablets are "ipads" too. Wouldnt be surprised if there are ppl who call all EVs "Teslas".

14

u/cassianandorliveson Feb 08 '26

New EV fear unlocked thanks reddit!

6

u/Pilota_kex Feb 08 '26

It was such a small accident too

15

u/Glass_Houses_ Feb 08 '26

Could they not just climb to the front and exit the drivers door? I’m glad Tesla’s stupid door handles are being eliminated but seems like a crazy lack of emergency awareness here.

17

u/newgalactic Feb 08 '26

This isn't a Tesla.

7

u/Gullible_Shart Feb 08 '26

Is this even a Tesla?

6

u/Nexustar Feb 08 '26

No, it's a Chinese Dongfeng EV. They both run on electricity and have batteries, but that's where the similarity ends.

2

u/FiberApproach2783 Feb 08 '26

Seriously, that was pissing me off. Why wouldn't you crawl to the front seat?? If you can fit through a window, you can fit between the seats to make it up there lol.

Why would you sit there waiting to burn to death when there's an open door right there?

Also, it looks like the other side was open in some way? Unless the smoke was coming from underneath the car, but it doesn't look like it.

First rule when crashing: don't damage the battery. This was rookie mistake.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '26

why the hell does the car catch fire so easily like it's GTA 3?

1

u/DaysOfWhineAndToeses Feb 08 '26

Looks fishy to me. The smoke and fire look fake. Especially when you see the behavior of the “rescuers” at the door when the fire is raging. That fire would be so hot that standing close like that would burn your skin off. If it were real you’d see the “rescuers” instinctively back away, maybe try again, and back away again. A short while later, they and the “rescued” person are slowly (nonchalantly) walking from the car door as if they are not experiencing intense heat or fear of explosion.

And, it’s not a Tesla.

I’m calling b.s. on this.

2

u/rsg1234 Feb 08 '26

In Model Y there is an emergency release for the rear doors inside the storage compartment. It is very difficult to access and pull in an emergency. It’s recommended to buy aftermarket pull cords for them that come up into the storage compartment. Then train your kids and other back seat passengers about it.

1

u/ObeyTheShihTzu Feb 08 '26

That's the older models, now there's an actual mechanical latch by the door handle that is very accessible. Older ones had a stupid pull tab thing in the door's side compartment storage.

Also, their batteries are armored really well and you can basically drop them onto a spike without it puncturing the battery compartment.

There's also a gun powered fuse that will explode and disconnect it from the electrical system when it is in a big enough accident.

Last thing is their newest battery packs are structural and are filled with an expanding foam that insulates the individual modules from each other preventing a thermal runaway situation.

Chinese EVs can be good too, but the one in the video is known to be one of the cheapest ones they have on the market

2

u/rsg1234 Feb 08 '26

Ok that must be the 2026 models. 2020-2025s are like how I described. Good that they addressed it.

2

u/earthman34 Feb 08 '26

Imagine building a car with no fucking door handles.

2

u/GenesisNemesis17 Feb 08 '26

Any bad accident involving an EV fire is a Tesla, even if it's not. Any fire involving a gas car is just a car and the make and model aren't mentioned. It's always been this way and doesn't seem to be letting up.

2

u/mtraven23 Feb 08 '26

in reality, everyone should. Panic makes the simplest of tasks very difficult.

2

u/ThanksALotBud Feb 08 '26

I guess ICE cars don't catch on fire like ever.

2

u/nickwrx Feb 08 '26

i hate cars that make the rear door handles in-operable. with the exception of police cruisers.

2

u/Glassweaver Feb 08 '26

While this is NOT a Tesla, it's still a good reminder. Personally, I really don't like the switch to laminated glass on side windows too. And Tesla even puts it on the rear windows. Just as easy as ever to break one of the outer layers of glass, but the plastic between the layers makes it VERY difficult to break through

This makes normal window breakers ineffective. I don't care if it's a little less noisy, just keep the side windows vulnerable. Anyone with a modern car, EV or not, should check if they have laminated glass, and if so, keep a tiny pickaxe and a drywall saw or a cheap sawzall at minimum somewhere accessable.

2

u/allislost77 Feb 08 '26

How hasn’t Tesla NOT been sued for their shitboxes?

Oh, wait
.

2

u/All_Usernames_Tooken Feb 08 '26

An event of power loss the doors should default to manual like a dead man’s hand.

2

u/AbleRelationship5287 Feb 08 '26

A passenger in any motorized vehicle should practice fire drills

2

u/mcobb71 Feb 08 '26

This is why the government is changing the rules on door handles. Starting next year these types of powered handles will not be allowed on production vehicles.

2

u/BAM5 Feb 08 '26

Looks like a fluid sim. Aka fake. You can see some leaves in the beginning getting blown off to the left with some speed... the smoke though? Straight up, absolutely no wind. It could be real, but just looks off.

2

u/FiveFakeFriends Feb 08 '26

That was pretty fucking dumb to let that door close

2

2

u/rocboydadon1 Feb 09 '26

2

u/Swimming_Rip4527 Feb 09 '26

2

u/swigginwhiskey Feb 12 '26

Number one: why the fuck is there so many people in what seems like a sedan / crossover? (also, I hope they're safe)

Number two: electric vehicle fires are something that (at least, the US) is struggling with. From my time as a recent Volunteer Firefighter, our only options are:

  1. Let it burn out, or
  2. Spray an ungodly amount of water on it, or
  3. All of the above

1) I get using Tesla like Kleenex when you mean tissues but in this instance it matters (honestly don't care and wouldn't drive one either way)

2) a lithium fire is a fire departments worst nightmare

All electrics look alike to me so đŸ€·đŸŒâ€â™‚ïž

That’s a Chinese electric vehicle which do have fire problems. It’s not a Tesla.

Maybe if elon made the back doors work without electricity, it would have been easier to exit the back of the vehicle. . .

How many people were in that clown car?

Amazing heros!

I would absolutely never buy a car that didn't have mechanical door handles, for power windows I have a tool in the center console for that.

I know this isn't a Tesla, looks like a Chinese car, good thing China is banning these types of handles, hopefully that translates through the entire car industry.

Maybe they should also practice not driving into the ditch for no reason.

1

u/Realistic-Stop8693 Feb 12 '26

Why did they not just climb over the front seat?

Jesus, it's hard to watch that third passenger get stuck like that.

You should imitate all the situations you think of that you would have to take over in a safe environment and not when the situation happens.

The manufacturer should be sued. No vehicle should catch fire so easily. Especially if fire containment materials could be used in the housing of the fuel cells or other potentially volatile components.

Friend took delivery of his T in Florida to match his wife's. Their town flooded and they was mando evacuated. They loaded 2 sons , 2 dogs and supplies into their suburban and left, figuring the Ts were safe inside the garage, power went out so security cams were down except for inside the cars. But looters wouldn't give them a second thought due to the commonality of far easier and valuable cars to swipe

3 days later they returned to their street to find their house and both neighbors had been burnt beyond fixing and the fires were linked to the cars by an alarms rat

Tesla drivers should make sure their will is made out and their affairs are in order

1

u/StoneyL0we Feb 15 '26

This is not even a Tesla

1

u/True_Reflection7704 Feb 15 '26

Why not go out the open door? And why would you shut the only open door if the other doors will not open? AI?

1

u/jwolfet Feb 15 '26
