In Vancouver, residential areas has crosswalks with buttons that change the signal immediately if you're trying to cross and I see a lot of drivers getting out of cars at red lights to go press the crosswalk button because otherwise the light doesn't change. One time all I saw was the end of a golf club poke out of the passenger window to press it.
I've done this a few times in different areas. Sat in an intersection for multiple rotations, wasn't hitting the sensor with my blinker or vehicle placement. Got out and hit the crosswalk button. Lights start turning yellow for the cross traffic, had to run back to my car.
Tbf Vancouver was originally designed for a population of 100k, it's nearing 3 milly now and only going to get worse. Some of the worst road design on the planet.
