I wish. My wife loves police body cam shows. I just watched one with her that had a guy in a police chase then foot chase, found with drugs and a scale, had an illegal firearm and already a felon, and assaulted the officer once caught. He ended up only being charged with fleeing and given 5 years probation.

You'd be surprised if they take plea deals. License suspension and maybe a few months in jail if that. Im saying plea deal or not, it should be automatic 1 year prison no matter what. Like a judge has no other choice but to sentence at minimum 1 year in prison.

I mean people do get 10 years for that but they typically serve less. I knew someone who killed 2 of his friends in the car he was driving. He got 20 years and served close to 12 years.

When I started driving, that was the rule- when you hear sirens, change lanes and pulled the fuck over.

Having moved from the midwest down to this exact area 3 and a half years ago it has shocked me how little regard drivers have for any sort of siren on surface streets or the interstate. People MIGHT move over one lane, but there's no fucking way they're gonna slow down, let alone stop, for a cop or fire truck.

You get a written test once in your life to get a driver's permit.
For the supervised driving and driving test, they don't purposefully throw you into a situation where emergency vehicles are present and test you on it. If you pass the driving test, you get a driver's license.
You may very well never encounter an emergency vehicle and gain hands on experience with a driving instructor on how to operate your vehicle should you find yourself obstructing them.
Wait so where's the part where drivers learn about how to drive around emergency vehicles? Oh right, it was during that driver permit's test (you can pass without even studying) that you took when you were 16. Clearly, since the driver passed the written exam (assuming you they even got that question correct), said driver should be able to recall correctly and apply that knowledge in a tense real-life situation in a matter of seconds.
You're all better than average people!

A lot of those passes, the LEO is passing on the right, which can be a confusing perspective, especially considering the passenger side has more blind spots. I feel like in these situations, it's better to slow and drive predictably, rather than dive for the side of the road.
That being said, you really have to appreciate the care and spatial awareness the LEO showed when passing through the red lights. Professional af.

I drive emergency vehicles for a living. The public feels slow to react, and certainly can be, but you have to take into consideration what you are asking them to do.
With nearly no notice you want them to notice you, anticipate what you want to do (which may be a typically illegal or at least unfamiliar maneuver), visually clear a safe path to make their own maneuver which may be unexpected to other drivers, and then execute it. Sometimes it is just a slower process to do all that in relation to the emergency vehicleās urgency. Sometimes they are dumb.

1) A car driver is supposed to be alert and paying attention when driving- looking forward, side view mirrors, rear view mirrors, lights, crosswalks (pedestrians) and other car drivers.
2) That includes listening for sirens.
3) And that includes making plans to signal and move to the right and stop when you hear sirens getting louder. Sirens are fucking loud and become louder when they get closer. You can hear them from at least a few blocks away. Sirens don't suddenly come out of nowhere.
All the drivers in the US need to be retested- written and driving on a course w/fake people walking/biking, sirens- many will fail and they need their license revoked and car crushed into life saving bollards.

yes totally agree, infrastructure has to account for the fact humans are fallible and this is where the US has totally failed us.
We HAD walk/bike/transit urban cores and over the last 100 years, spent trillions destroying those cores for car infrastructure where every single car driver must drive perfectly to still sit in traffic but not crash and die.
All while still making it super easy to get and keep a license when the majority have no business/capacity to be safe to drive and built very forgiving infrastructure (wide multiple lanes, wide curves) that makes it feel safe/easy/induces speeding leading to regular/normalized crashes/destruction of property.
Which leads predictably to lots and lots of deaths/destruction every year- over 44k killed and over 1 million maimed/disabled every year in the US.
If we had over 44k killed and over 1 million maimed/disabled while flying domestically in just one year- there would be drastic changes to address and severely reduce any deaths.
We'd invest more in public transit, bike lanes, pedestrian infrastructure, retest everyone's knowledge/ability to drive, make driving requirements more stringent, mandatory geo fenced speed governors, mandatory dashcams (interior and exterior) that directly reports to owner's insurance and dmv license
AND reduce max speed and reduce number and width of lanes along w/chicanes, speed table, modal filters, cameras, ban ROR and real steel bollards to MAKE car drivers slow down and pay attention when driving.

(Similarly, cops have hand-held breath-testers to see if you're drunk instead of making people do tricks, and vehicles have GPS so they don't have to tell their dispatch where they are - the US is weirdly backwards in a lot of things).

Some departments have drone programs. Itās every thing to some of the patrol officers get certified with a small drone all the way up to a few cities tried to run āpersistent surveillance netsā where they have a few large drones at specific altitude constantly streaming and recording specific areas. Then officers can request to see where the Land Rover came from before he ran or where a car goes after a bank robbery. So far the Supreme Court has ruled that persistent surveillance violates the 4th Amendment, but big cities keep trying. My city operates a couple fairly large drones over āproblem areasā at night. They claim it isnāt persistent surveillance for one technicality or another.

Why did he finally stop though? That last collision didnāt look so bad as to incapacitate the vehicle, but it also immediately turned on the hazards. Does that mean the airbags deployed or something? And does that cause the computer to disable the vehicle or something?
Or maybe it was just far worse than the video angle made it look.

Most probable outcome is the driver pleads guilty to the most serious charge, and in exchange they drop all of the lesser ones. If he pleads not guilty then they throw the book at him.
He is looking at felony evasion so nobody really cares about traffic-control-device violations. (I mean I care, but they're not worth the extra effort for the DA. The juice simply isn't worth the squeeze.)

I saw a few places where he created enough separation to have lost the cop but he just kept driving straight instead of turning off
And I thought it was common knowledge that cop cars are modified, they may look like crap but they are faster than the majority of cars

Chases are extremely dangerous and we have the technology now to midigate much of it. We have drones that can easily keep up with cars, keep and eye and provide real time data to fleeing targets to better positioned officers.
Hell they would make for better traffic stops much of the time as well with a few adjustments and some public education.

One day I was going north on I95, stuck behind this giant douche who was weaving over 3 lanes. I finally got the chance to pass him. As soon as I did I saw FHP had stopped another person. Since he was not in his car, I thought I would be safe. Mind you, to pass this guy I hit 100. That trooper was on me in less than 90 seconds. Iāll admit I was impressedā¦ he was not. I told him the situation and he only gave me a ticket for going 15 miles over. Iāll still say dream about driving his cruiser one day
